“He taught them with authority” Mark 1:22

Epiphany 4

The Fourth Sunday

in Ordinary Time

Celebrant & Preacher:

Fr Gary Ecclestone SSC

Welcome to today’s livestreamed Sunday Parish Mass

Judge eternal, throned in splendour,Lord of lords and King of kings,With thy living fire of judgementPurge this realm of bitter things:Solace all its wide dominionWith the healing of thy wings.

Still the weary folk are piningFor the hour that brings release:And the city’s crowded clangourCries aloud for sin to cease;And the homesteads and the woodlandsPlead in silence for their peace.

Crown, O God, thine own endeavor;Cleave our darkness with thy sword;Feed the faithless and the hungryWith the richness of your word:Cleanse the body of this nationThrough the glory of the Lord.

Words: Henry Scott Holland (January 27th 1847-1918)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen

The Lord be with you

And also with you

The Priest welcomes everyone to the service.

PRAYERS OF PENITENCE AND FORGIVENESS

The grace of God has dawned upon the world

through our Saviour Jesus Christ,

who sacrificed himself for us to purify a people as his own.

Let us now confess our sins.

Silence is kept for personal reflection

Lord Jesus, you are mighty God and Prince of peace:

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you are Son of God and Son of Mary:

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you are Word made flesh

and splendour of the Father:

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

May the God of all healing and forgiveness

draw you to himself,

that you may behold the glory of His Son,

the Word made flesh,

and be cleansed from all your sins

through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

All stand to say the Gloria

Glory to God in the highest,and peace to his people on earth.Lord God, heavenly King,almighty God and Father,we worship you, we give you thanks,we praise you for your glory.Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,Lord God, Lamb of God,you take away the sin of the world:have mercy on us;you are seated at the right hand of the Father:receive our prayer.For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord,you alone are the Most High,Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,in the glory of God the Father. THE COLLECT

Let us pray

A moment for silent reflection is kept

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 1:21-28)

Glory to you, O Lord.

This is the Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you, O Christ

THE SERMON

After which a period of silence is kept

THE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father;

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son

is worshipped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism

for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen

THE PRAYERS Kneel or sit

These words may be used:

Lord in your mercy hear our prayer

or

Lord, hear usLord, graciously hear us.

or

Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord

and let light perpetual shine upon them

Let us join our prayers with those of Our Lady,

Mother of the Word made flesh,

as we greet her and say:

Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee,

blessed art thou amongst women

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.

Merciful Father,

Accept these prayers for the sake of your son,

our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE PEACE

Our Saviour Christ is the Prince of Peace,

of the increase of his government and of peace,

there shall be no end.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

We offer those around us a sign of peace.

THE MINISTRY OF THE SACRAMENT

Love is His word, Love is His way,

Feasting with all, fasting alone,

Living and dying, rising again

Love only love is His way.

Richer than gold is the love of my Lord.

Better than splendour and wealth.

Love is His way, love is His mark,

Sharing His last Passover feast.

Christ at the table, host to the twelve Love,

only love, is His mark…

Love is his mark, love is His sign,

Bread for our strength, wine for our joy,

This is my body, this is my blood

Love, only love is His sign…

Love is His sign, love is His news,

Do this He said Lest you forget

All my deep sorrow, all my dear blood,

Love, only love, is His news…

Love is His news, Love is His name,

We are His own, chosen and called,

Family, brethren, cousins and kin.

Love, only love is His name…

Love is His name, love is His law,

Hear His command, all who are His,

Love one another, I have loved you

Love, only love, is His law…

Love is His law, Love is His word,

Love of the Lord, Father, and Word,

Love of the Spirit, God ever one,

Love, only love, is His word…

Words: Luke Connaughton (1917-79)

Pray my brothers and sisters

that my sacrifice and yours

may be acceptable

to God the Almighty Father.

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands,

for the praise and glory

of his name, for our good,

and the good of all His Church.

O Lord, we bring to your altar

these offerings of our service:

be pleased to receive them, we pray,

and transform them into the Sacrament of our redemption.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

The Lord be with you

And also with you

Lift up your hearts

We lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

It is right to give him thanks and praise

All kneel or sit

All honour and praise be yours always and everywhere,

mighty creator, ever-living God,

through Jesus Christ your only Son our Lord:

for at this time we celebrate your glory made present in our midst.

In the coming of the magi

the King of all the world was revealed to the nations.

In the waters of baptism Jesus was revealed as the Christ,

the Saviour sent to redeem us.

In the water made wine the new creation was revealed at the wedding feast. Poverty was turned to riches, sorrow into joy.

Therefore with all the angels of heaven

we lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name

and proclaim our joyful hymn of praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Lord, you are holy indeed,

the source of all holiness;

grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit,

and according to your holy will,

these gifts of bread and wine

may become the body and blood

of our Lord Jesus Christ;

who in the same night that he was betrayed,

took bread and gave you thanks;

he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take, eat;

this is my body

which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper

he took the cup

and gave you thanks;

he gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you;

this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you

and for many

for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this, as often as you drink it,

in remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith

Christ has died,

Christ is risen,

Christ will come again.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross,

his perfect sacrifice made once

for the sins of the whole world;

rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,

and looking for his coming in glory,

we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we bring before you this bread and this cup,

we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving

and we thank you for counting us worthy

to stand in your presence and serve you.

Lord, may this sacrifice,

which has made our peace with you,

advance the peace and salvation of all the world.

Strengthen in faith

your pilgrim Church on earth;

your servant Jonathan our bishop, and all the bishops.

Welcome into your kingdom

our departed brothers and sisters,

and all who have left this world in your friendship.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people

and gather into one in your kingdom

all who share this one bread and one cup,

so that we, in the company of Holy Mary, Mother of God,

of James, Simon & Jude, and all the saints,

may praise and glorify you for ever,

through Jesus Christ our Lord;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all honour and glory be yours,

almighty Father,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

As our Saviour Christ commanded and taught, together we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed by thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for for ever and ever. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ

though we are many we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

grant us peace.

THE INVITATION

Behold the Lamb of God,

behold Him who takes away the sins of the world.

Blessed are those who are called to his supper.

Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,

but only say the word and I shall be healed.

The Body of ChristAmen!

The Blood of ChristAmen!

Let your face shine on your servant. Save me in your merciful love.

O Lord, let me never be put to shame, for I call on you.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION FOR THOSE AT HOME

Spiritual Communion is a Christian practice of desiring union with Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. It is used as a preparation for Mass and by individuals who cannot receive Holy Communion.

Say the following prayerfully and quietly before saying the Prayer for Spiritual Communion:

Jesus my Lord, I thee adore, O make me love thee more and more.

Come to my heart Lord Jesus, there is room in my heart for thee.

A deep silence is kept

The Angelus

A Prayer in Thanksgiving for the Incarnation

The Angel of the Lord brought tidings to Mary:

And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;

blessed art thou among women

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord:

Be it unto me according to Thy word.

Hail Mary . . .

And the Word was made Flesh:

And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary . . .

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,

that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:

Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that as we have known the Incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ

by the message of an angel, so by His Cross and Passion

may we be brought unto the glory of His Resurrection,

through the same Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Amen.
