Message from the President

2

At Stillman, we are answering the higher calling for higher education—building bridges across boundaries and fostering skilled changemakers whose passion to serve will shape a better future for us all.

In the summer of 2017, Stillman College cast a bold vision for the future, a vision to reach new heights of excellence across every facet of its mission. Today, with dedicated faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends leading the way, that vision is becoming a reality through the college’s RAMP UP initiative.

The overarching goal of Stillman College is to RAMP UP every aspect of the Stillman College experience through 2022 by delivering academic excellence that is fully supported by administrators, faculty, and staff through detailed mission statements, goals, objectives, and targeted measures for every division and area on campus.

My vision demands student success and institutional growth delivered through academic excellence to RAMP (Retain, Advance, Measure, and Place) every aspect of the Stillman College experience. Through continuous assessment and improvement, we will demonstrate our commitment to RAMP UP Stillman through 2022 and deliver on student success, establish new partnerships, serve our community, grow our endowment portfolio, and expand our valued social mobility record. In so doing, we will achieve the strategic outcomes embedded in RAMP 2022.

We are a community—strong, connected, and united in our celebration of diversity, pursuit of academic excellence, and conviction that each of us has a unique genius to develop and contribute to the world. Won’t you join us in this world-changing endeavor!

Hail Stillman!

Faculty development is a top priority for the College. Faculty have engaged in online coursework on best practices in classroom delivery of course con-tent, participated in the Consortium for Instructional Excellence and Career Guidance, and attended workshops on active learning in the classroom.

The role of faculty in teaching and student engagement is essential to the attainment of Stillman’s Mission and retaining students throughout their academic careers. As a result, Stillman purposefully maintains a low faculty-to-student ratio to promote a more personalized education for students.

The Academic Success Center is a new initiative that provides an intervention for students who are in academic jeopardy or whose behavior indicates that academic jeopardy may be a real threat to their success at Stillman. Student intervention and engagement are the cornerstones of this center.

It is the herculean task of the college professor to play a major role in helping students to believe that they have what it takes to stay the course, and to compel them to aggressivelyfighttoovercomeeveryobstacletheywill

encounter in pursuit of the desired degree.”“

Good professors understand that they are like potters sitting at the potter’s wheel molding students into new products. In our teaching, advising, mentoring, role modeling, and even in the

challenging of our students to rise to their highest potential, we arerefiningthehumanvessel, ourstudents, intonewproducts

that meet the needs of the world in which we live.

“”

We retain by reaching out to students after students have given up on themselves. We retain students by knowing their

names and feeling comfortable enough to pull them to the side to let them know we “see” them.

“”

6

Stillman faculty and staff take a comprehensive and strategic approach to student success, persistence, and completion. We know that students persisting to completion of their educational goals is a key gauge of student success, and therefore institutional success.

Stillman students participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at Drexel University. This partnership helps Stillman provide students invaluable experience as researchers. Justus Martin, a senior from Stillman, working with a graduate student at Drexel.

The Office of Career Services engages students by incorporating professional, career, leadership, and personal de-velopment, in order to foster optimal professional and personal growth for Stillman students. Toward this end, the staff has held over 300 workshops and events to catapult student success.

Stillman creates, supports and sustains an educational environment that allows students to succeed inside and outside the classroom by:

• Providing a professional development course for studentsthatprovidesengagementandreflectionthrough self-assessment, guest speakers, lecturers, and workshops.

• Establishing a Career Advisory Board to provide a forum for employers and the Stillman College community to engage in relevant discussions re-garding a wide variety of career and employment issues.

• Launching an Executive Speaker Series to pro-vide professional development, preparation, and exposure to students by inviting a diverse group of speakers including legislators, business leaders, educators, and advocates.

The Office of Career Services in part-nership with Alumni Affairs hosted its 2nd annual 40 under 40 luncheon to showcase and demonstrate Stillman graduates’ advancement beyond the Stillman campus.

At Stillman, the strategic plan defines the performance to be measured, while performance measurement provides the feedback that keeps the strategic plan on target. The connection strengthens both processes. As a result:

• Students are provided customer-friendly pro-cesses that allow greater understanding of the programs and services offered by the college.

• Collaborations with area school districts and other four-year colleges and universities allow for seamless preparation from high school to graduate/professional school.

• Processes to meet the “just-in-time” demands of business and industries allow students to enter the workforce with the professional, technical, and soft skills needed to excel in a global society.

• Meaningful integration of technology enhances the teaching and learning environment produc-ing students that thrive in technologically-rich environments.

Data-driven decision making is impera-tive for institutions of higher education. It was because of this that the college established two new divisions, Institution-al Effectiveness and Strategic Initiatives. These new additions promote excellence through improved planning, assessment, and accountability.

An institution’s capacity to offer students the very best in instruction can be mea-sured through the depth and breadth of its academic offerings. Stillman’s Accel-erated Management Program (STAMP), approved by its regional accrediting body, is the college’s first online degree completion program.

Standards are high at Stillman. From a highly-credentialed faculty to customer-centered staff, Stillman is strengthening and regulating its academic environment through the implementation of effective and efficient faculty and staff development programs.

Plans are being developed to repurpose King and Williams Halls as a senior residential community.

The college has partnered with Stillman alumna Tita Williams, owner of two day care centers in Jackson, Mississippi, to offer the first day care center on campus: Tita’s Tots Day Care.

Stillman’s commitment to providing a technologically-rich environment for its highly capable faculty and students is further realized in its participation in the Apple Distinguished Schools program to incorporate technology into the course offerings and academic programs.

Stillman’s capacity to embody the fullness of its goal to be perceived as a world-class institution is codified in the update of its campus master plan. This updated facilities master plan is designed to provide a modern, liberal arts college environment to both constituents and stakeholders and includes:

• Establishing a new committee with the mandate to develop a new Stillman College Master Plan that reflects the President’s vision to 2020 andbeyond.

• Maintenance of the existing facilities management ecosystem(infrastructure, landscape, grounds).

• Renovation and reopening of existing adminis-trative, instructional, and student life facilities.

• The Stillman Foundation was resurrected in 2017toundergirdthemasterplanaswellasthecollege’s strategic plan. The foundation raises funds exclusively to support the mission for the college and the vision of President Warrick.

Making Bricks Without Straw:The Case for Giving

This well-known idiom is an appropriate way to describe what Stillman’s administration is able to do with little—to perform a task despite the lack of necessary materials. The current economic climate is no deterrant to Stillman’s commitment to its students and its mission. Imagine what could be done with more!

The Stillman Foundation hosted a student housing investment luncheon to kick off the foundation’s fundraising campaign for the college’s student housing needs. Educators, faith leaders, business and industry partners, alumni, and local and county leaders came with open hearts, minds, and wallets to provide generous support. Monies raised by the Stillman Foundation allowed the college to renovate historic John Knox Hall, a residence hall for male honors students.
