A man who lost his entire family in a farm fi re east of Castor just weeks before Christmas is devastated about the deaths and tired of the suspicions.

“There are all kinds of rumours,” Jason Klaus, 38, said on Dec. 23, a few hours after police announced they consider the deaths of his father and sister as suspicious and that his mother re-mained unaccounted for.

“People say all kinds of things.”

Police said that while they’re now treating the deaths of two people identifi ed in the rubble as suspicious, they weren’t calling it a homicide — as of Christmas holiday press time last week.

The Calgary Medical Examiner’s Offi ce has identifi ed the remains of Gordon Klaus, 61, and his daughter, Mon-ica Klaus, 40. Gordon’s wife, Sandra, 62, hadn’t been accounted for, said Staff Sgt. Ron Campbell of the RCMP K Division out of Edmonton.

“Investigators are treating these deaths as suspicious, and the in-vestigation is ongoing,”

he said in a Dec. 23 news release.

Coronation RCMP were called to a farm-yard at about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8.

The fi re smouldered for days, preventing in-vestigators, including Calgary Major Crimes, from accessing the fi re scene for almost a week.

The cause of the fi re

is still under investiga-tion by the provincial fi re investigator, said Sgt. Josee Valiquette from Edmonton K Division.

In an interview with the Castor Advance last week, Jason Klaus said, “There are no words” to describe his losses.

“We did everything together. We farmed to-gether. We hunted to-

gether. We did everything together. They were my best friends.”

Jason Klaus, who lives across the fi eld from his parents’ home, told the Edmonton Jour-nal last week that he became suspicious after he learned that his par-ents’ truck was found parked near the Battle River, near Alliance, on

the Sunday that the fi re broke out, but added that they hadn’t gone out the night before.

He also said that peo-ple reported seeing a man walking on the deserted highway the night before the fi re. Police didn’t confi rm that report.

Jason Klaus had farmed with his father. Sandra Klaus, whose par-

ents Lowell and Janette Berry live in Halkirk, worked at Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital in Castor.

Monica Klaus lived in Stettler, where she worked at Vortex Pro-duction Services Ltd. in payroll and human re-sources. Friends said she frequently visited with her parents on weekends.

It took a lot of pas-tries to help a group of local pooches, but Stettler’s Scotiabank managed to raise $2,000 from a bake sale to help Animal Haven Rescue.

“The community is important to us and we pick a different charity every year,” Samantha Templeton, the Stettler branch manager, said after presenting the cheque Dec. 23 to the animal rescue group.

“We are all animal lovers.”

The funds will help rescue more dogs, said Candis Willis, the trea-surer of the Animal Ha-ven Rescue.

In 2013, the group found homes for 70 rescued dogs and cats, compared with about 40 the year before.

The organization still needs to adopt out 16 dogs and five cats, and there’s a waiting list of animals to res-cue that are at other shelters, said Adrienne Copeland, the presi-dent of Animal Haven Rescue.

And, because the group doesn’t have a

facility, all the dogs and cats are living in volunteers’ residences until a home is found, Copeland said.

The animal charity also works with the Al-berta Spay and Neuter Taskforce, which holds clinics to spay, neuter, and vaccinate dogs and cats on native reserves in Alberta free of charge. The First Na-tions communities help fund those clinics.

Animal Haven Res-cue is in “desperate need” of foster families for dogs and cats until a permanent home is found for them. Foster

homes for pets receive food and equipment needed for the ani-mals.

There’s also a Guard-ian Angel Program where individuals can sponsor a homeless an-imal by pledging mon-ey each month to help pay for the pet’s sup-plies, veterinary bills and necessary items.

Donated items, such as cat litter, food, good- condition col-lars, leashes, toys and crates are always wel-come.

Anyone wanting to help, or donate, can call 403-741-6128.

A GREEN TIP: “A local holiday feast”

No one can do everything. Everyone can do something.

Sponsored by theHeartland Beautifi cation Committee

1. Exhaust is hazardous to human health, especially children’s: car idling is the second-hand smoking

of the outdoors.2. Ten seconds is the maximum: after ten seconds, you waste more money and fuel idling the engine

than restarting it.3. Modern fuel-injected engines are not meant to idle: idling forces

an engine to operate in a very ineffi cient and gasoline-rich mode that can degrade the engine’s performance and reduce mileage.

Idling pollutes and harms our health, particularly children’s. Please turn off your motor.

The Stettler Fire Depart-ment crew were en route to a motor vehicle incident east of Stettler on Highway 12, but were cancelled be-fore arriving after RCMP determined the fi re depart-ment wasn’t needed.

“The roads were ex-tremely slick yesterday,” Fire Chief Mark Dennis said Dec. 23.

A vehicle was off the road, but there weren’t any injuries or fuel leaks. “Sometimes, it’s more dan-gerous to have that many emergency vehicles on the highway and that can cause problems,” Dennis said.

On Dec. 22, fi refi ght-ers responded to a call of a house fi re in the 4800 block of 53 Street, where a mi-crowave was on fi re. There were no injuries reported.

“Message for this time of year is that everyone has Christmas festivities in mind and cooking is the No. 1 cause of fi res at this time of year,” Dennis said. “People need to be a little more cautious. They have family and friends and lots of action going on with cooking and they need to be cautious.” — Lisa Joy

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The Catholic Church consecrates saints with less pomp and sentimen-tality than was lavished on Nelson Mandela dur-ing the weeklong media orgy that we have just been through. We haven’t seen such a ridiculous spectacle since ... oh, since the 50th anniver-sary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy three weeks ago. But at least the Kennedy orgy was over a lot faster — and no one compared him to Gandhi or Christ.

Pity the poor journal-ists who had to grind out endless stories about what was hardly a news event at all — 95-year-old man dies after lengthy illness — and inevitably ended up sounding like syco-phants and fools. True, the world needed (or at least wanted) a political icon of perfect virtue, but the beatification of Nel-son Mandela took much too long.

The problem was that everybody in the media knew well in advance that Mandela was dying, and had time to invest millions in preparing to “cover” the event. Hotel rooms and telecom facili-ties were booked, crews and anchors were de-ployed, and the expense had to be justified by round-the-clock, wall-to-

wall coverage of funeral orations, vox pop inter-views, and talking heads.

And, of course, all the world’s politicians showed up for the greatest photo op of the decade, including many who had condemned Mandela as a terrorist before he pulled off a peaceful transition from apartheid to major-ity rule in South Africa. But now that the babble of rhetoric has died down and just before the myth was takes over complete-ly, let us talk honestly about who he was and what he accomplished.

Mandela understood that South Africans need-ed an icon, not a mere mortal man, as the found-ing hero of their new de-mocracy, but he had a strong sense of irony. It would have got plenty of exercise as he watched the local politicos and the foreign dignitaries strew metaphorical flow-ers on his grave.

The man whom they

buried at Qunu on Sun-day was arrested by the white minority regime in 1963, probably on a tip from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. He was the head of the Afri-can National Congress’s military wing, Umkhon-to we Sizwe (MK), at the time, and continued to back its campaign of sabotage, bombing and attacks on military and police targets throughout his 27 years in prison.

If the South African Communist Party is to be believed, he was a mem-ber of its central com-mittee at the time of his arrest. It was a different time, when U.S. President Ronald Reagan could de-clare that the apartheid regime was “essential to the Free World,” and the ANC’s main international supporters were the Sovi-et Union and Cuba. Man-dela might have ended up as a man of violence if he had not gone to prison.

Instead, in prison, he

had the time to develop his ideas about reconcili-ation and persuade the other ANC leaders who were also confined to Robben Island of their value. By the time he came out of prison in 1990, he had become the man that everyone knew they could trust — in-cluding the whites.

During the next four years, when he and F.W. De Klerk, the last white president, negotiated the transfer of power from the white minority to the black majority, he really was the indispensable man. His commitment to reconciliation was so visible and genuine that whites were willing to do what had once seemed inconceivable: to hand over power before they absolutely had to.

If you want to know what South Africa would have looked like if the whites had clung to pow-er down to the last ditch, look at Syria today. But it was not only Mandela who saved the country from that fate: they gave the Nobel Peace Prize to both Mandela and De Klerk, because the mir-acle could not have hap-pened if De Klerk had not had the will and the skill to lead his own Afrikaner tribe out of power.

Then, after the first

free election in 1994, Mandela became the president, and frankly he wasn’t very good at it. He had no executive experi-ence, nor much aptitude for it.

Thabo Mbeki did most of the hard administrative work behind the scenes during Mandela’s presi-dency (1994-1999), while Mandela greeted visiting celebrities, hobnobbed with the rich and famous, and solicited donations for various causes that included, unfortunately, his own extensive family. He was not personally corrupt, but he was in-volved in a few dubious deals, and he tolerated corruption in others.

But he did his country one last big favour: he re-tired at the end of his first term rather than clinging to power. He was already 81 years old at that time, but lesser men (Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, for instance) have not let that stop them. And he even had a few good years left to enjoy his family before age began to drag him down.

He was not a saint; he was just a man. But he was the right man at the right time.

Gwynne Dyer is an inde-pendent journalist pub-lished in 45 countries.

Dear Editor:

Who is watching the watch-ers? Here in Canada, revela-tions about potential violations by our own spy agencies haven’t come from government over-sight, they’ve come from Edward Snowden — and the Conserva-tive government doesn’t see that as a problem.

Recently, former U.S. in-telligence contractor Edward Snowden leaked documents sug-gesting that the Communications Security Establishment of Can-ada (CSEC) initiated industrial

espionage against Brazil’s min-istry of mines and energy, and helped allies monitor leaders at a G20 summit hosted by Canada.

This activity is embarrassing, unethical and harmful to our in-ternational relations. And it un-derlines how the current struc-ture for oversight of our national security and intelligence agen-cies is woefully inadequate and does not provide Canadians with a meaningful understanding of what the government is doing.

That’s why I have reintro-duced legislation to create a par-liamentary committee to review

the framework and activities of all the Canadian national security agencies, including CSEC, CSIS and the RCMP. Going as far back as 2004, an all-party committee — including the current Minister of National Defence, Peter Mac-Kay — unanimously called for this reform.

Indeed, all other countries in the Five Eyes network — the al-liance between Canada, the Unit-ed States, Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand — established similar committees years ago.

Yet when I sought the con-

sent of the House of Commons to advance this important bill to committee, it was blocked by the Conservative Party.

Questioned about the issue in the House, the Tories even deny there is a problem.

That’s not good enough. Ev-eryone else recognizes that proper, pro-active oversight of our intelligence agencies is long overdue —even the Conserva-tives of ten years ago agreed.

The Stettler Legion Blues picked up a pair of weekend points at home in their final midget A hockey action before the Christmas break.

They tied the Barrhead Steelers 3-3 on Dec. 22, one day after tying Edson 1-1 at the Stettler Recreation Centre.

Stettler begain that busy stretch of three games in four days with a 4-3 loss to the Innisfail Flyers, who lead the North Central Minor Hockey Association midget Tier 1 division with a 14-2 record.

Stettler (6-8-2) is in third place in the five-team South Division, behind Innisfail and the Ponoka Wolves (11-4-2).

In their most recent game a week ago Sunday, the Blues rallied from a 3-0 deficit and scored all three third-period goals to pull even against

Barrhead (10-2-3).Power-play goals from Matt

Sylvester and Dylan Pritchard, with the winner with just 1:11 left, sandwiched a Quade Cassidy goal. Sylvester and teammate Ethan Rost each had two-point games for Stettler, which got a 39-save perfor-mance from Jordan McCallum.

On the previous day, McCallum blocked 38 shots by Edson (7-4-3).

The lone Stettler scorer was Brendan Bardwell, who tallied in the first period before Edson evened the score halfway through the sec-ond period.

In losing to Innisfail on Dec. 19, the Blues gave up 2-0 and 3-1 leads in the third period to suffer a one-goal defeat.

Drew Cassidy, Chase Cooke and Tanner Steinwand each scored for

Stettler. Innisfail’s Ryan Spiller netted the tying goal on a power play with six minutes left and the winner with just 56 seconds remaining.

Cooke and Bardwell each picked up a couple of points for the Blues, while McCallum made 49 saves.

Patrick Fougere figured in all four Innisfail goals, including three assists. Greg Pols blocked 32 shots.

For the past couple of weeks, Stettler has played without two in-jured players, Zack Werbowesky and Cody Ball.

Now off for the Christmas break, the Blues and Stettler’s two other midget teams host their annual tour-nament this Friday through Sunday at both Stettler Recreation rinks.

Sunday’s finals are at 1 p.m. (B division), 1:15 p.m. (C category) and 3:45 p.m. (A division).

A new year often begins with good intentions, as thousands resolve to make positive changes in their l i ves. Resolu t ions are easy to make when one is toasting at midnight and ready to take on the world. But resolutions can be harder to keep as the days turn into weeks and weeks become months.

Researchers a t the University of Minnesota found that 80 per cent of resolut ion-makers have given up by Valentine’s Day. A January 2012 poll conducted in England found that, of the 3,000 respondents, roughly three-

quarters of them admitted t hey we re no l onge r confi dent they would stick to their resolutionss for the rest of the month.

T h e re a re s eve r a l d i ffe rent reasons why re s o l u t i o n s fa i l , a n d re c o g n i z i n g p o te n t i a l pitfalls can help people stick with their positive changes throughout the new year. The following are a few ways to ensure your resolutions last the year.

• D o n ’ t m a ke a n unrealistic resolution. Losing weight is a popular resolution. Some resolve to drop dozens of pounds in an effort to completely

transform their bodies. However, when the weight doesn’t magically come off, it can be easy to grow discouraged. Weight loss is not instantaneous, and healthy weight-loss plans advocate gradual weight loss, such as one to two pounds per week. It can take several months to see a considerable difference if you’re aiming to lose 50 pounds. Instead of setting such a lofty weight-loss goal, establish incremental milestones with tangible dates. For example, your resolution may be to lose 10 pounds by March 1. That is an attainable goal.

• Don’t go it alone. You’re more likely to have success w i th keep ing a resolution if you have outside suppor t. Enl ist a buddy to go to the gym with you or provide suppor t as you attempt to quit smoking. Having a support system in place can motivate and inspire, knowing someone will be keeping tabs on you may instill enough anxiety to propel you through your resolutions.

• Make resolutions for the right reasons. Making resolut ions for the wrong reasons can be counterproductive. If you want to lose weight for cosmetic reasons and not to improve your overall health, you may fi nd your motivation waning as the weeks turn into months. Making resolut ions for the r ight reasons often provides ample motivation.

• A v o i d b o r i n g

resolutions. Many people make boring resolutions that often focus on the mundane instead of more positive things. Resolutions need not be changes t h a t p ro fo u n d ly a l te r your mental or physical wel l -being. Making fun resolutions will probably help you stick to them. Perhaps you will resolve to spend more time with the kids or promise to try more adventurous act iv i t ies. Maybe you decide it’s time pursue a hidden passion, such as music or ar t . Enjoyable resolutions are much easier to keep.

• Avoid expensive r e s o l u t i o n s . B e f o r e m a k i n g a re s o l u t i o n , research how much a reso lu t ion might cost . Gym memberships or new hobbies may stretch your budget, and if you cannot afford a resolution, how can you keep it? If money is a concer n , choose

resolutions that are fi scally possible.

• Keep resolutions private if you so prefer. Many people are compelled to share their resolutions with fr iends and family. However, that can lead to feelings of competition or animosity if someone is realizing goals before you. Feel free to keep your resolution private as you go through the process. Once you have met your goal, then you can share your success with others.

• Don’t give up too eas i ly. Some peop le are up for a challenge a n d o t h e rs a re n o t . Re s o l u t i o n s t y p i c a l l y require a little extra effort, especial ly in the ear ly stages. Resolutions will not necessarily be easy to keep, but the longer you stick to a resolution, the easier it becomes to make it a reality, so resist the temptation to throw in the towel too early. — Metro
