GC2: Completed Checklist-Step by Step Guide and Faultfinder This is a step by step guide of how to maintain a light and check for fault. Within this table I have included: A step by step guide column which will clearly describe the process within maintain and checking through the lighting rig in the drama studio; two columns labelled yes or no to tick when you have done that step and it is all correct; a solution column which will explain what to do you if you have ticked no and there is an issue within the checklist and there you will find a solution to the problem and be told what to do and also lastly a comment column just in case there are any additional notes along the way.

Step by step Instructions

YES NO If no, What should you do? Comment

Lighting First when walking into the drama studio you must check if all 10 Fresnel light is in the rig. A Fresnel looks like this.

If you have ticked no and one of the lights is missing you will need to locate where that light is and reattach it to the rig. Spare lights are located at the back of the hall.

Secondly check if all the lights are rigged the correct way up. You can see if they are upside down by how the knob of the Fresnel will be on the bottom.

If you have ticked no then the solution would be to get the ladder and climb up to the rig making sure someone is standing on the bottom of the ladder and undo the G-clamp and the safety chain and turn the Light so it is the correct way round.

Next you will need to check through each light and make sure they all have a G-Clamp which is attached to the rig tightly and securely so it will not fall down. This is what a G-Clamp looks like.

If you have ticked no then you will need to find a G-clamp which are located at the back of the hall and put it through the handle of the light then attach it to the rig and tightly fasten so that it is not loose

Next you will have to check through all lights and make sure they all have a Safety Chain attached to them which is then attached securely to the rig. This safety chain will also need to be not wrapped around any wires from the light. This is what a safety chain looks like.

If you have ticked no then you will have to locate a Safety chain which can be found at the back of the hall and then attach it round the handle of the light and then round the rig to ensure that it will not fall.

Next you have to make sure that all light that contain any Barn doors are placed and attached correctly so that they can be used properly and will not fall. The Barn doors have to be attached by having all three clips secures and not loose. This is what barn doors looks like.

If you have ticked no then you will have to get the ladders which are found at the back of the hall and re-attach the barn doors by clipping all three clips in securely so that it isn’t loose.

Next you have to make sure that all light that contain any Gel Frames are placed and attached correctly so that they can be used properly and will not fall. The Gel Frames will contain a gel that will have to be cut to the right size and shape depending on the light and also have to be attached by having all three clips secures and not loose. This is what Gel Frame looks like.

If you have ticked no then you will have to get the ladders which are found at the back of the hall and re-attach the Gel Frames by clipping all three clips in securely so that it isn’t loose.

Now you will have to check if all of the light’s lamp holders are shut. Therefore the wires and cable and electric magnetic circuit will not be loose and therefore will not create a hazard.

If this is a no then shut the lamp holder and make sure it is secure so it will not open at un wanted times again.

Lastly before going over to the lighting desk and dimmer check if all plugs from the lights to the socket are pushed in and not loosely open.

If you have ticked no you need to get a ladder that are located at the back of the stage and push the plugs into the sockets correctly so that it will not create a problem within the circuit.

Now you need to go over to the dimmer desks and start patching which is when you make sure the plugs correspond to the lighting number for example plug 5 links to dimmer 5.This is a picture of the plugs corresponding.

If they are not corresponding you will need to change the dimmer to the correct plug on the board so that they correct match and therefore all the lights are corresponding to the dimmer desk.

Next you will need to go to the back of the desk and check if the DMX cable is in and connected from the desk to the dimmer. This is what a DMX cable looks like.

If this is not connect or is even missing you will need to go and locate a cable which will be found in the technicians office in a labelled box and reattach it through the DMX cable connection in the back of the desk with the DMX cable input in the back of the dimmer box.

Next plug in the 32 Amp plug from the dimmer to the power source and turn on at the wall you will know if you have successful turn the power on because the dimmer desk will light up.

If this does not work source for technical help to see if the fuse in the Amp is wired wrong and if there is internal problem within the plug.

Page 4: Step by step guide table first one

The 32 Amp plug looks like this.

Next you will need to plug in the lighting desk to the socket and connect it to the power source then at the back of the lighting desk you will need to switch it on by the power button which looks like this. You will know if you are successful switching it on because it will light up.

If this does not work then there will be something wrong with the fuse inside the plug of the lead therefore you will need to get technical help off a qualified person to rewire the plug.

Then on the desk you need to turn the grand master switch up to 10. The grand master fader looks like this.

Then turn faders A and B on by moving each of them to the number 10. These faders look like this.

Page 5: Step by step guide table first one

Then move the channels on the faders from 1 to 6 up in turn to turn on each light individual to see if everything is working. These faders in the six channels look like this.

If the lights do not turn on you now have to check through a multiple of things. Firstly you have to check if the fuse is not working on the dimmers

If this is not working you will need to find technical help to re wire the fuse to make sure it is working correctly in the plug.

Next check if the light is plugged into an extension lead before connecting to the lighting desk and dimmers then the fuse may be broken in the extension lead

If so find a new extension lead which is located in the technician’s office at the back of the hall in a labelled box will need to replace the current one. Or find a technician to check the fuse or the wiring in the plug.

If the light will still not turn on then the last thing you need to check is the bulb to see if it has blown.

If it has then you need to locate a new bulb from the technician’s office at the back of the hall. You will need to replace this bulb whilst turning everything off as to secure your health and safety to not be electrocuted you also need to handle the bulb with care and not touch it with your hand as to not burn yourself and also reduce the bulbs life.

After running through this checklist, if still the light are not working you will need to find a professional technicians help for further examination of the rig. Also the problem that could occur would be the hygienic and cleaning maintenance of each light individually therefore after every other month the lights should be properly cleaned and rechecked to reduce further damage to the lights.
