The matriarch of the family was the late Mrs Lucy Margaret Trim, one of the most prominent businesswomen Narrandera has ever known. Mrs Trim (nee Kronig) arrived in Narrandera from Rockhampton in 1909 and had been associated with the millinery and mercery business, starting out at an employed milliner with the late Mrs Wornes. It was during that time that she met her late husband and the patriarch of the family Leslie Donahey Trim, who was a partner in the firm Lord and Trim which conducted a mercery business in the shop next door. They married in Sydney in 1915. Soon after this the millinery and mercery shops were combined under the name of L Trim. The late Mrs Lucy Trim had great singing ability and she had many invitations to study overseas. On one notable occasion she sang before the late great Dame Nellie Melba when that great soprano visited Narrandera. As a vocalist Lucy Trim was very popular within the town and her melodious voice was frequently heard in the church choir. While staying at the Murrumbidgee Hotel soon after her arrival in Narrandera Mrs Trim often entertained guests in the evenings. Her husband the late L D Trim died in 1962 and the couple were survived by their son Leslie Montgomery Trim and daughter Mrs Lexie Porter. Leslie Donahey Trim had arrived in Narrandera in 1911, after being born in Armidale in 1889. His father owned a retail shop and sawmill at Armidale and was a former Mayor of that centre. As a young man he went to Sydney to train as a window dresser for Lowes and then took up a similar position with C W Wornes and Co at 149-151 East Street Narrandera. There he met his wife Lucy and they had three children Lesley Montogomery, Alexia Margaret (Lexie) and Law- rence. Lord and Lett bought Wornes’ business and then Leslie D bought Lett’s half of the business for £280. The business was then known as Lord and Trim for some time until Leslie bought out Lord’s share and the business became L Trim Mercier. Lucy ran the millinery side of the business. Leslie D travelled around the neighbouring country- side selling menswear from his horse and sulky, calling at stations and shearing sheds. Chits (dockets) were signed by the workers and presented to the manager of the station who would deduct the money owed from the men’s wages. In about 1913 Leslie D bought a scat car and used it as a private hire car. He expanded this business by buying a 1914 Buick and a 1916 Mitchell to use as hire cars. When hired by shearers it was hard to get the shearers past the Gillenbah Hotel. Whisky was 2/6 a bottle then! There were eight hire cars in Narrandera. Drivers for Leslie D were Bill Cochran and Jim Bell. Bill later worked for Trims in their clothing store until his death. In about 1928 Trims store moved to the corner of East and Bolton Streets where the Commonwealth Bank and Landmark now stand. In 1932 that store was burnt to the ground. The land was sold to Gilpins and land was purchased from Arthur Eve at 89 East Street, where a new store was built and traded there as a men’s, ladies and children’s wear store as well as manchester. This store is now Robinson’s Department Store. Leslie D also bought the Commercial Hotel (now the Charles Sturt) which he later sold to Tooths. Over a period of years other Trims stores were opened in Leeton, Junee, Cootamundra, Wagga Wagga, Albury and Goulburn. During the war years the Trims bought a house at Bellevue Hill in Sydney where they lived and ran their businesses from for the next 12 years. Their son Leslie Montgom- ery Trim married a Narrand- era woman Audrey Irene (Judy) Sullivan in 1947 and he opened and operated a men’s wear shop in Pitt St Sydney trading as L Trim and Co. They traded there for 10 years. In 1949 a daughter Judith Ann was born to Judy and Les. Judith Ann went on to become a world champion pistol shooter, a first for Australia, in Phoenix Arizona in October 1970. Judith was inducted as a member of the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame. The lease ran out on the Trim’s Pitt St store and Leslie M and Judy decided to return to Narrandera. They built and opened the town’s first licensed super- market on a vacant block of land next door to the shop owned by Trims. After selling their home in Sydney Leslie Donahey and Lucy Margaret Trim also returned to live in Narrandera and lived in a flat at the back of the shop. Lucy was often seen working behind the counter and Leslie D, despite having a stroke, was always good for sharing a good yarn or joke with customers. Leslie died in 1962 and Lucy Margaret in 1967. Les and Judy Trim ran the supermarket for 14 years. They then leased it out to concentrate on their clothing stores that were still re- maining. When the lease on the supermarket expired the leasees moved to another shop and Judy and Les were able to expand the clothing store into where the super- market had been. This they ran for many years before their retirement and then leased the premises to new owners. Over the years the family had varying interests, owning the Murrumbidgee Hotel for a couple of years. Following in his father’s footsteps as a car enthusiast Leslie M became a champion midget car driver. His car was known as The Black Shadow No 13. He also took up flying, obtaining his pilot’s licence and part owning a couple of planes. After owning a home at 42 Victoria Avenue Narrandera for many years Judy and Les built a new home on their daughter’s property ‘Dale- ford’ on the Narrandera- Leeton Road. Here they enjoyed their well earned retirement. Leslie M died on April 4 2002 and Judy on March 10 2003. They will always be remembered for their wonderful generosity and hospitality and their assoc- iation with the retail industry of Narrandera. Judith Ann is now living near Woodford Queensland. Her main interest over many years has been horse breed- ing, show work, dressage and judging at shows and she is now enjoying the Queensland climate to pursue these interests.
