Restoring Files into Case CATalyst

We’ve installed Case CATalyst and the writer drivers, now it’s time to bring your files into Case

CATalyst. We’ll be using the Restore feature in Case CATalyst to bring the files in.

1) Open Case CATalyst. You should be at the User Level. Double click on your name to go

into the user.

Your user will look like this.

2) Now click the Tools menu and select Restore (or press Ctrl+r) to restore your files.

3) The Open window will appear. We need to browse to where our files are located. In this

example we will be restoring our System Files from a USB flash drive.

First on the left-hand side choose the USB flash drive so that Case CATalyst displays

the files on the flash drive on the right-hand side of the window.

Then select systemfiles.zip and click Open.

© 2014 Stenograph L.L.C 20

4) The Restore window appears. This window shows you which files are going to be restored

into Case CATalyst.

The left side of the window shows Restore jobs from and Subfile types panes.

These panes show what files you will be restoring.

The right side shows where your files will be restored to. Make sure that the

Restore Jobs To option in the upper right corner is set to C:\Cat4\usr\Dooley and

that the Keep Case Structure box is checked. Then click OK.

5) A dialog box may open asking if you want to replace the existing file. This dialog box

comes up if Case CATalyst already has a file with the same name as the file you’re

restoring. Since this is a new computer, Case CATalyst only has the default files and not

any of your backed up files. So in this case you will want to choose Yes to All.

© 2014 Stenograph L.L.C 21

6) Once the restore is finished, it will bring you back to the Manage Jobs screen. If there are

other files you would like to restore, you would repeat this same process.

Setting Up Audio

You’re almost done. Just a couple more steps to go. Now you need to set the audio settings on

the computer to use Audiosync. Both Windows 7 and Windows 8 use the same steps to set the

audio settings.

1) From the Desktop of your computer, move your mouse to the lower right corner and find

the icon that looks like a speaker. If you position your mouse over the icon, it will say

Speakers. The icon usually is to the left of the clock. Right click on the speaker icon

and left click on Recording Devices.

2) A window will appear displaying all the recording devices on your computer. In this

example we’re using the FrontMic jack on the computer. It is set as the default device as

indicated by the green check mark. To adjust the recording levels double click on your

device.

© 2014 Stenograph L.L.C 22

3) This will open the Properties window of your microphone. Click on the Levels tab at the

top. Click and drag the volume slider all the way to the right so the volume is at 100%. If

you have a Microphone Boost option, it’s best to keep it at +20dB if possible.

4) Once you’ve made those adjustments you can click Apply and OK to close the Properties

window. Then click OK under the Sound window to close it. That’s it. You’ve adjusted the

volume on your computer to record audio in realtime. Now you can test realtime and

make sure your audio is recording properly.

Testing Realtime

1) The last thing you need to do to with your new computer is to test realtime and AudioSync

to make sure it’s all working. To do this open Case CATalyst and from Manage Jobs click

the Translate icon on the Function Bar or press Ctrl+t.

2) The Translate window will appear. In the lower left corner, click on Options.

3) The Options window will open.

Click on the Realtime tab at the top.

Under the Realtime tab on the left hand side is the Realtime Writer field. Make

sure it’s set to your writer. In this example we’re using a Diamante via USB cable so

we’re selecting Diamante-USB.

Below the Realtime Writer field is the Audio section. You want Case CATalyst to

record audio and save it with your transcript so you will want to make sure the

Record To field is set to Current Folder.

Also make sure the Audio Input drop down menu is set to Default. Once you’ve

set your options, click Apply then OK.

© 2014 Stenograph L.L.C 24

4) Now you’re back to the translate window.

In the top left hand side next to Steno Source, you need make sure it says Writer.

You also need to click the down arrow next to Layout File and select your layout.

On the right hand side you need to make sure both check boxes next to Record

Audio are checked.

Then in the bottom left, type a file name in the File Name field and click OK.

The Translate window will go away and a new file will open. You should see a dialog box

appear that says Connected to Writer…Stroke a Key to Begin Writing. Write a few

strokes on your writer and they should appear in the Case CATalyst transcript window.
