Personally, I always leave each and every STAR conference having learned at least one or two new things that I can take home and implement. I want to thank John Wenclawski for hosting the Liaison Committee at Stenograph headquarters. I know both organiza- tions benefited from the exchange and we look forward to doing it again. But back to the Diamante tour. I did not know there were so many parts to that machine. I guess I just didn’t know exactly what all went in to making the best machine on the market. We were walked down the assembly line process from start to finish. It truly is fascinating. Of course with the bunch of inquisitive folks we have on the LC, we couldn’t keep our hands off of the inventory. I even spotted a few of our esteemed members digging through the discard pile to see what kind of goodies were in there. It was like kids in a candy store. Return to Greatness. That’s our tagline for STARCON15 being held in New Orleans, Louisiana, this October. As we prepare to launch a full-on as-sault to get the word out, lots of excit-ing things have been going on behind the scenes to make this one of the best conferences we’ve had in years. Most of our speakers in NOLA will be first-time presenters at STAR and will bring a new perspective to the way we do things in this business. Personally, I always leave each and every STAR conference having learned at least one or two new things that I can take home and implement. My hope is that we have 200+ people show up in NOLA and take home with them new ideas and a renewed perspective on their career. And with the lineup that we have slated, that shouldn’t be an issue.

Have you ever wondered how a Stenograph Diamante machine is put together? Well, I have, and I got the opportunity in March to get a personal tour of Stenograph’s facilities in Elm-hurst, Illinois. This was in conjunction with the Liaison Committee meeting with the development team and each of the departments within Stenograph for two days of meetings. I want to thank John Wenclawski for hosting the Liaison Committee at Stenograph headquarters. I know both organiza-tions benefited from the exchange and we look forward to doing it again.

I even spotted a few of our

esteemed members digging through the discard pile to see what kind of goodies were in there. It was like kids in a candy store.

As the Liaison Committee met with the different departments within Stenograph, it was great to finally put a face with a name that we’ve heard from all these years. I believe the progress made between Stenograph and the LC was more than we’ve had in years and it will only help to make both organizations better.

Also in March a Strategic Planning Committee met in Chicago after the LC meeting. Let me just tell you, I’ve never been a part of a strategic plan-ning meeting before, but this one was fantastic. We had members from all parts of the country participate to give input. By the end of the day, there was a consensus among the participants that STAR has finally identified who we are and who we represent. the Technological Advancement of Reporters, but let’s be honest, that was a mouthful. The best kept secret in the reporting industry can now be explained to those who are not yet members in a simple, easy-to-explain fashion. We are a Stenograph users group, both hardware and software, that works toward the advancement of technology in our industry, and made up of both agencies and reporters. And to make the group even better, it is also one of the best groups for reporters and firm owners to network. I’m pretty sure every single member of our association at this point falls under one of those categories. Who wouldn’t want

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTContinued from page 1

to be a part of an organization like that? We are excited to be rolling this message out through the summer, with both the STAR and Stenograph organizations.

I feel we have made great strides in the STAR organiza-tion within the last six months and I look forward to what the next six months have in store for us. And as I said in my last message, as you attend local, state or national meetings for court reporters, please remember to slide into your conversations the great things over at STAR. We are the best ambassadors for our association.

I’d be willing to bet that the majority of us were taught “some of” (SPH-F) in our theory. A great and useful out-line. But why did our theory stop there? And why did we?

Years ago, I started incorporating the “of” word pairs when one of our reporters returned from court and off-handedly remarked that she had discovered BIF (bit of) and BLIF (little bit of). The lightbulb went on!

So here are my “of” phrases. I hope you find them as useful as I have.

Add “T” for “the”: S-FT, L-FT, LOFT, WUFT, OUFT, SM-FT, BIFT, and so on.

Of course, any conflicts – aware of/waiver – can be word grouped “the waiver” or asterisked “D*AIF” day of/Dave.

Save the date, October 1-3, 2015, in New Orleans, Louisiana! Since we’ve cut back to only one conference a year, the goal is to make this year in NOLA something special. If you’re interested in the professional development track, we have got sessions on taming your e-mail, customer service and the sexy lives of international court reporters. Or if you need to brush up on your CaseCATalyst skills, we have Stenograph’s head trainer, Cindi Lynch, every day and all day Saturday to make you more efficient with your software. Be sure to get there early, as Thursday evening will be a catered

affair with industry leaders presenting short topics, or STARTalks, while the bartenders are serving. And of course, there will be two nights of the Irving Starkman Experience at the hospitality suite.

Those that have been Irv’d know what I’m talking about. The rest of you, it’s your time.

Registrations limited to the first 250, so keep your ear to the ground for more info. You do not want to miss #STARCON15!

My baby girl was born in February. Like most first-time parents, I find myself completely enamored with every smile, “coo” and cute move she makes. Of course, I am compelled to cap-ture as many of these moments as possible on camera… a/k/a my iPhone. While I do possess an “old-fashioned” camera which

I purchased specifically to capture high-quality photos and video of the babe, the re-ality is that the conve-nience of my phone has made it my primary photo-tak-er. In fact, i t w o u l d appear that m o s t o f the world’s

population now shares this reality. (Have you ever tried to take a selfie with a traditional camera?) But my phone is not just my primary photo and video camera; it is also my boom box, my social media account manager, my weather-tracker, and an email source, to name just a few of its daily jobs. With so many phone functions, all of which take up lots of space, I found myself confronted with this message all too often: “Cannot Take Photo. There is not enough available storage to take a photo. You can man-age your storage in Settings.” This can be very frustrating when you’re trying to snap a heart-melting baby moment. Apparently, the other 600+ photos of my sweet Caroline

had eclipsed my limited storages space. I needed a solu-tion…and fast! And I found one.

Google Drive is my solution, my saving grace, my techno-crush, my new BFF. I quickly learned there are a plethora of features and benefits that those smart folks at Apple have attached to this amazing product. Here are three of my top reasons for stating that Google Drive is an interface that would be super useful for just about anyone.

1. Ease of Use: Because it is a Google product, you do need a Gmail account to create your Google Drive. Simple as pie to set one up, and it comes with free mail. Like millions of others, I already had one, so all that was required to relieve my phone from its storage burden was go to the App Store and download the Google Drive app. From there I was able to create folders, and then I just selected and uploaded photos and video from my phone into my new Google Drive. After they were safely in the cloud, I deleted them from my phone and, VOILA, free space! With the app, I can still pull up pictures and video of my baby whenever I want to stare adoringly at them. Additionally, I can access them through my Gmail account from any mobile devices or desktop computer. With the 15 gigs of free storage that comes with a Google Drive, my first upload of (hundreds of) photos and video only took up about 7% of the available space! Yay!

2. Ease in Sharing: Once on the Google Drive, one has the ability to share folders with any email address. When selecting the email recipient, you can choose whether that person can view only, or edit the contents of the folder. This feature can be a great collaboration tool, especially when sharing word documents, spreadsheets and slide presentations. Instead of sending attachments back and forth with different versions and titles, you and whoever you choose can always be working off of the most up-to-date version saved in the cloud.

Case CATalyst AudioSync® is one of our most popular features in Case CATalyst. The ability to record audio while writing realtime and then listen to that audio while editing the job ensures the transcript is complete and accurate. In short, reporters want the best audio quality possible; in Case CATalyst 16 we have added seven new audio codecs to help achieve this.

Case CATalyst 16 retains the standard GSM 6 MB/hr and ADPCM 15 MB/hr codecs but in addition you can also use codecs ranging from PCM 58 MB/hr, all the way to PCM 348 MB/hr. If you are satisfied with the current audio options then there’s no need to change. If you would like to change the codec, we suggest selecting the PCM 58 MB/hr codec first and testing it.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind when us-ing these new codecs. The first is using the higher codecs creates larger wav files. If you send your transcripts to a scopist or use Work Units in Case CATalyst via the internet (i.e. Dropbox), depending on your internet connection, it will take more time for the recipient to receive the job.

Second, wav files have a file size limitation of 2 giga-

3. Ease of Creation: One of the coolest things about Google Drive is that you can create a Google Doc (akin to Microsoft Word, with a very similar, familiar format), Google Sheet (akin to Microsoft Excel) and Google Slide (akin to Microsoft PowerPoint) that auto-saves to the cloud instantly. Have you ever been working on a Word doc, then had your computer freeze… and, of course, you had not yet saved your document and therefore it was lost forever? Not sure why it’s so hard to remember to hit SAVE, but I have lost more work than I care to admit publicly. Google Drive saves your work to the cloud whenever any change is made to a document. The key is to title your work first so you can find the correct document if your application

was to close unexpectedly. (Otherwise, you’ll have to search through untitled documents until you find the correct one.) Google’s version of the popularly used Microsoft products can then be saved to its Microsoft counterpart, or as other file extensions such as PDF or JPG. Don’t forget, you can easily share your work from Google Drive at any point in the process.

My husband has used Google Drive for work for several years and always says, “I wish everyone knew how to use it.” Well, now there’s one more of us onboard. And now that I’m leveraging its many advantages, I am doing my part to make my husband’s wish come true by spreading the good word. Google, you rock! Say “Cheese,” Caroline!

Cleaner Audio in Case CATalyst® 16

bytes. This is normally not an issue since most of the codec options are well under 2 GB, unless the higher 231 MB/hr or higher codecs are used. For example: If the 318 MB/hr or 348 MB/hr codecs are used, the realtime recording cannot be more than 6 hours long because the wav file will exceed the 2 GB limitation. The 231 MB/hr codec cannot be more than 9 hours long. If the 231 MB/hr or higher codec is selected, Case CATalyst 16 will display a warning message informing you of the 2 GB limitation and allow you to select a different codec. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the new audio codec options in Version 16 but bigger is not always better.

Be aware that many factors can affect the quality of audio recording such as the environment, the sound card on the computer, the microphone and more. Make sure to test your audio codec selection, and if you use a scopist, make sure your audio selection is compatible with their computer. Enjoy the additional audio codecs available in Case CATalyst 16 and other exciting new features such as Case Prep, CARTView, and more.

This committee meets with Stenograph representatives throughout the year to voice concerns and requests of you, the user. All STAR newsletters include this form that you can use to relay your thoughts to the Liaison/Technology Committee. The more feedback and/or input you can provide, the better the committee can represent you and your wishes to Stenograph. The committee will publish responses to your input in future STAR newsletters.
