Addressing GAPS……...
Millennial Generation’s STEM Perceptions VS. Teacher STEM Perceptions
NSF’s Middle Schoolers Out to Save the World (MSOSW) Conclusions made by Knezek, Christensen, & Tyler-wood (2011) suggested that
millennial generation’s lower perceptions towards STEM and STEM careers versus older generation could result in a lower standard of living for millennial generation.
NSF’s STEMRays Conclusions made by Feldman & Pirog’s (2011) STEMRays program suggested
that it is necessary for STEM programs to include the involvement of high quality instruction.
Need for extensive formal training in the sciences not as high as the opportunity in teaching, learning, and doing science.
Is there a need for stronger STEM training programs?
• Lack of training to encourage confidence related to STEM skill sets (Murphy & Mancini-Samulson, 2012).
• Few opportunities for educators to engage in training after receiving degree (Cotabish, DAiley, Hughes, & Robinson, 2011).
• Lubinski & Benebow (2006) stressed importance of not basing STEM leadership programs on standardized testing.
• Need of facilitation exceptional STEM leadership programs.
• Teachers do play a critical role in regards to student STEM perceptions.
How are institutions facilitating STEM K12 training?
eMAST (Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching Project)
STEM Certificate Model for Elementary Education Majors in Minnesota (Murphy & Mancini-Samueson, 2012).
Project Lead The Way
Limited research exists examining STEM knowledge base, STEM skill sets, and experiences necessary for teachers to implement STEM integration.
xMOOC vs. cMOOC
How do we design STEM MOOCs to foster hands on experiences?
STEM K12 MOOCs via social constructivism approach
