peace with them before the sun goes

for and the weak nothing to run from.

from the PrincipalDear Stella Community,
Welcome Welcome to the Stella community in 2017! I encourage you to read our newsletter each week to keep abreast of our news and events as well as gain an understanding of our priorities in learning and teaching and pastoral care at the College. I would particularly like to welcome our new students in Years 7 to 11. Stella Maris College is a great school and I know you will enjoy your years with us.
At our Staff Mass last week, we joined in prayer with our colleagues from St John the Baptist and St Mary’s Primary Schools as well as St Paul’s High School. Father Paul reminded us that we have a significant role in the lives of the young people in our care. We need to be mindful of that responsibility and challenge them to be the best people they can be.
This year we welcome four new teachers. Ms Emilie Hamilton and Ms Jessica Willson join the English Department, Natalie Cavallaro is now part of the Design and Technology team and Simone Molloy joins the Mathematics Department. Please make them feel part of the Stella community, as we know you will.
Stella has been successful in implementing a new ‘Kiss and Drop’ in Iluka Avenue for school drop off and pick up. We would ask that parents please utilise this facility and not stop in Eurobin Avenue. Eurobin Avenue will see quite a few trucks taking away rubble and delivering goods for our new building over the coming months. This increased truck traffic and the usual bus and car traffic leaves it less than desirable for student drop off. The new drop area will be safer and is right at the Stella front gate! Can I suggest that the girls sit in the back seat so they can safely alight onto the grass outside the Convent.
Attached to the newsletter is a donation form from the Good Sams Foundation (GSF). The College supports the GSF through our fundraising and awareness raising for the Sisters’ work in Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Good Samaritan Inn and Good Samaritan Housing. If you are interested in their work, please look at their website: http://www.goodsamsfoundation.org.au/donate and see what the foundation is doing.
Our Year of Peace and Justice This year our Benedictine focus is on Peace and Justice. Benedict chose a line from the Psalms to include in the Prologue to the Rule, ‘Let Peace be your quest and aim’.
We need to make sure we understand that creating peace is something we all need to be part of and it can only be brought about when we actively set about making it happen.

• Remember to bring a hat and plenty of sun cream.
• No coloured hair spray or coloured streamers at all ( the poor quality dyes effect the pool)
• Students must remain in House areas when they are not competing. The indoor pools and children’s pools are out of bounds.
• Normal school rules apply for the day.
• Parents are welcome to spectate, but students must travel to and from the carnival with the school
The carnival will determine the champion House through participation and performance in both Championship and Non-championship events. The Stella Maris Representative Swimming Team will also be selected from the results of the carnival.
Strong swimmers should enter championship events. The Stella Swimming Team and Age Champions will be selected from championship events.
STUDENTS ARE TO ENTER CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS ON MOODLE. Entries are now open and will close at 3.20pm on Wednesday, 8 February. Please enter the correct age group (the age you turn this year).
You may enter non-championship events on the day. IT IS EXPECTED THAT ALL STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE SWIMMING EVENTS.
Ribbons will be awarded in both championship and non-championship events.
You can only swim each stroke and distance once. For example you cannot do 50m championship freestyle and 50m non-championship freestyle. However, if you are a strong breaststroker you may do 50m championship breaststroke and 50 non-championship freestyle.
There is no scheduled lunch break. Students are encouraged to bring their own healthy snacks and lunch for the day. A canteen is available, but students will not be allowed to buy hot food or hot drinks.
WE ENCOURAGE ALL STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE. THE CARNIVAL IS A DAY OF GREAT FUN AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE STELLA GIRLS SWIMMING, CHEERING AND BEING INVOLVED IN THIS ALWAYS EPIC EVENT!

Welcome back! It was lovely to see so many smiling faces return this week. Thank you also to the girls for being able to adapt to their new environment. The Deck at the Main Campus has been transformed and we sincerely hope that the girls enjoy this space for years to come. This week the girls were given their Passion Planners. These planners are an important component of our Pastoral Program and they enable the girls to positively plan their whole life, not just school! Many staff members also have the planner and we’ll all be working together to set our goals and road maps in the weeks to come. This can be a great conversation starter for you and your daughters. Ask your daughter to show you her planner. You might also check them out on Facebook, Instagram and the web – www.passionplanner.com
This year we have engaged Justin Coulson to work with our community. Justin is a parenting and positive psychology expert. He will work with staff, parents and our girls in the years to come as a consultant and critical friend. Justin has an excellent portfolio and you can read more about him on his website - http://www.justincoulson.com/. Justin is also a father of six girls, which we think makes him very qualified to work with us!
As always, please feel free to make contact with any member of our Wellbeing Team, including Kylie Andrew (College Counsellor) or me. Sarah Carter, Deputy Principal
from the Deputy Principal
CurriculumDebatingThe Independent Schools’ Debating Association Competition is about to start for 2017 and we are looking for new members to join our debating teams. Debating provides students with an opportunity to hone their public speaking skills, learn about current social issues and join a team. The competition involves some of the best schools across Sydney and gives students the opportunity to be involved in a larger community where they can hear diverse opinions and extend their thinking. The Debating competitions run on Friday nights and teams meet for coaching during the week. All students interested in Debating are invited to attend our meeting at lunch on Tuesday, 7 February in the Theatre. Anna Riley, Head of Debating
SportSAILINGCalling for students to be ‘Stella Sailors’!
Our Years 10, 11 and 12 students have the exciting opportunity to begin sailing lessons in Term 1. No previous sailing experience is required. The pilot Melges Sportsboat Sailing program was run by Middle Harbour Yacht Club with our very own senior students last term and it was a huge success!
Girls who participate in the 20 hour sailing course gain internationally recognised sailing certificates, sailing knowledge and have fabulous fun on the water in new keel sports boats. Our girls can progress through the National Keelboat Syllabus from beginner right through to skippering in races.
Our first sailing session will be held on Wednesday, 8 February beginning at 4pm. Girls are very welcome to come along on this day just to have a look and try it out. Three to four students and one instructor per boat sail around Middle Harbour with a safety boat in attendance. A teacher will be present onshore in a supervisory role.
The course will run on Wednesdays in Term 1, 2017. MHYC will provide all the necessary equipment (including life vests which are mandatory). The cost of the course covers the students for insurance and includes club membership.
Nicky Bethwaite, ex-Olympic sailor, is coordinating the training and racing program for the new sports boat Melges 20 class at the Club. She says, “We believe that our Learn to Crew Program is ideal as it allows the students to build self-confidence, self-sufficiency, spatial awareness and team building to play a major part within an effective crew. The main objectives of our program are to introduce students to the basics of sailing on a small boat, including boat handling, safety, and sailing in a non-competitive, and social environment and provide an opportunity for them to develop life skills such as leadership, teamwork, confidence and water safety.”
Please email Ann O’Brien as soon as possible [email protected] with any questions or expressions of interest. Ann O’Brien, Head of the Sailing Program

Sisters of the Good Samaritan – Offering refuge, education, hope. The past year saw 519 women and children in need of crisis accommodation welcomed at the Good Samaritan Inn, more than 800 nights of family accommodation provided at the Good Samaritan Housing and hundreds of children and young people in poverty in The Philippines, Kiribati and Timor Leste assisted with support for their basic needs and education.
This is only possible due to the continued good will and generosity of many supporters, including the students and families of Good Samaritan Colleges.
Can you help us continue this work by making a one-off or regular donation to the Sisters of the Good Samaritan Foundation?
No matter how large or small, your donation is greatly appreciated. All donations are distributed in full, without deduction of any administrative costs, to Sisters of the Good Samaritan ministries.
