CASTOFCHARACTERSLUCAS - (The Steadfast Tin Soldier) Our one-legged hero dreams of being the perfect soldier. Kind, honest, loyal and a rule follower to a fault. A creative tinkerer, he has fashioned a false leg out of iron. He has a recurring nightmare that he will be consumed by fire. He doesn’t start as - but becomes the Steadfast Tin Soldier.

PRINCESS ROSALIND - Popular princess with a natural talent for popular theatrics however, she has brilliant leadership and governing abilities that society won’t let her use because they prefer she just be a beautiful figurehead.

ZOEY - A tattered rag doll - A street-wise, fast-talking, cynical, bossy, spunky, sarcastic, thief from the wrong side of the workshop. She never had a family or place to belong. Representative of a “lower class of toys”. Seemingly looking out for only herself. She is changed by observing the kindness and purity of Lucas. Looks more like Rey form Star Wars and NOT like Raggedy Ann.

CAPTAIN LANCE - Lucas’ older brother - An extraordinary soldier. A bit of a show off. Dedicated to rising in rank. Embarrassed by his younger brother who he grows to admire.

JACK - A brilliant, dangerous, sly advisor to Princess Rosalind. Set on the destruction of the workshop. Jack has a malformed arm.

CATHERINE, MICAH,and CECILY - Assistants to Princess Rosalind. Content being surrounded by luxury and the attention of the soldiers.

WARBLE - A tiny, child-like, flying robotic toy servant of Jack. Played by a quad-copter. An individual with a large personality and loyalty to those that treat her kindly.

ASH - The cruel, psychopathic and cunning leader of the rats.

KEVIN - The largest and kindest of the Rats.

RAJA/RANI - A wise, if slightly eccentric, tribal sage and his second. Their sole purpose in life is to lead toys to their true purpose.

OLIVIA - A young rag doll.

POTTER, PATTON, DWIGHT - Soldiers.

OTHER RATS, TOYS, SOLDIERS and PATCHWORK TRIBE PEOPLE (ED, WANDA etc.)

SETTING: A vast kingdom containing multitudes of tin soldiers, crowded settlements of rag dolls, legions of evil rats, and led by a beautiful princess. All contained in a rustic long-abandoned workshop and it's surrounding grounds.

TIME: Perhaps 200 years ago. Perhaps this very evening.

Soldiers almost run over Zoey, a rag doll, who clearly dislikes them. She’s dressed some more like Rey from Star Wars - NOT Raggedy Ann.

SCENEONEMUSIC: 02 CAUGHT

LUCASI have a recurring nightmare where I die in flames. Cheerful, I know. I'm made of tin. It’s not like iron. It’s a soft metal... I'm slowly melting as the flames burn higher. When the fire finally dies there's nothing left of me but a shiny tin heart. Same dream every night. So… I try not to sleep.

Volunteered for night patrol! (He's not naive, he really thinks it's a cool assignment.) Can you believe no one else wanted it? Perfect, right? Perfect. All's right looking out over such a beautiful kingdom at night. Peaceful. This is sure to make the nightmare... just... disappear. Maybe.

I'm rambling and real soldiers don't ramble. (A burst of "little boy" excitement.) I"M A SOLDER! FOR REAL! It's kind of a big deal. I promise I won't be so shiny all the time. ("Shiny" must mean "Noob" to tin soldiers.) Maybe I WILL, though! (He's kind of jazzed about that.)

Almost time for the bell tower signal. (He has his copy of the "Instruction Book" in his hand, though he clearly has these regulations memorized from months of prep.) Four bells - the sign that all is clear. Five bells - calls troops to head quarters. 6 - High alert. And so on. Oh - oh - oh. There it is.

Bells sound in the distance.

Seven - rats in the workshop.

LUCAS is immediately on alert. He thinks he hears something. Yep. There is something there. LUCAS runs to head it off.

Suddenly ASH, a rat, makes a run for it and LUCAS has a clear shot.

LUCASStop! Put your hands above your head. Hands above your head!

ASH has his back to him. He raises his hands.

ASH ALL RIGHTI KNOW YOU HAVE ME IN YOUR RIFLE SIGHT SO IF YOU’RE REALLY GONNA TAKE YOUR SHOTTHEN TAKE YOUR SHOTI’M CAUGHT

He turns around to face LUCAS.

He turns to leave.

ASH looks at Lucas, laughs and runs. LUCAS tries to run after and stumbles over his bad leg. LANCE runs after ASH. A gun shot off.

SCENETWOAfter a moment LANCE returns clearly frustrated.

LUCASDid you . . .?

LANCENo. He got away. But he’ll be back. (He looks at LUCAS) Now that he’s found a weakness.

LUCASI was trying to keep him talking. He was saying something about . . .

LANCEThat’s enough, Lucas. I saw it.

LUCASAssassination. Some veiled threat on the Princess? I thought if I had another moment he would . . .

MUSIC: 03 ASTERISK

LANCE No more excuses. You’ll just embarrass both of us.

I KNOW IT’S HARD TO HEAR BUT IT’S CLEAR THIS JOB’S TOO MUCH FOR YOU THESE PATROLS ARE FOR MORE CAPABLE SOLDIERS WE BOTH KNOW THAT IT’S TRUE YOU’RE DISCIPLINED, SMART YOU LACK NOTHING IN HEART BUT THERE ARE LIMITS TO WHAT YOU CAN DO YOU COULD CONTRIBUTE THE MOST AT A CEREMONIAL POST I’LL PUT THE ORDERS THROUGH

LUCASWhen I first saw the princess it was on a poster for her coronation - A graceful portrait of her dancing up on one leg. I thought she was like me. Of course, I soon realized that her other leg was just behind her. You just couldn’t see it. So she was not like me. Anyway, it was a good first impression.

A sudden shift in the music and we are in the middle of what appears to be a contemporary rock concert/political rally. LUCAS stands guard.

ROSALIND is a pop-star princess, beloved by her people, but we see that she has natural intelligence and thoughtfulness dismissed by JACK who ushers her, Campaign-Trail-Like, from public appearance to public appearance. She is accompanied by her dancers CATHERINE, CECILY and MICAH.

They are gone. On the way out, they attempt to tiptoe through a row of sleeping rats - Lucas happens to touch the last of them who wakes the rest and they give chase! After a merry chase through the sewers, LUCAS and ZOEY hide at a dead end - the rats appear just inches above them and clearly on their scent - just as they about to be seen there is a sound off stage and the rats exit. L ucas

ZOEYI don't know exactly, but I'm pretty sure the secret ingredient is ME!

ZOEYThanks, Gi-nor-mo . . . .(LUCAS nudges her) Kevin. (Thumps her chest.) Respect.

Just as they are having a genuine moment, ASH grabs Zoey’s ankle. ZOEY, screams, takes Kevin’s “gun” and fires three shots.

KEVIN I will put my hand out like THIS and then you will shake it. Then you will exit very quickly before the other angry rats come.

SCENESEVENThe halls of the workshop palace. There is a horrible crash and a shout of anger followed by a second, yet-more-horrible crash. SOLDIERS enter, picking up breakable objects from the pathway. A RAG DOLL scurries out of the way. Something is coming. The flying drone zips in followed closely by JACK who grabs a SOLDIER's rifle and aims it at the drone.

JACK STOP!

OLIVIA tentatively approaches.

JACK Do you want to be queen, someday?

OLIVIA That's not for me to say, sir.

JACK You do, though. I know you do. Wouldn't that be something? A Rag Doll Queen.

ZOEY It’s 4 in the morning? Don’t you ever stop to sleep?

LUCAS No time. . . . and I have a nightmare... thing.

ZOEY Wait, what?

LUCAS Wait!

ZOEY That's what I said...

LUCAS (LUCAS grabs her shoulders) No, WAIT!

ZOEY WHAT?

LUCAS Look. (They look down where she was about to walk.)

ZOEY That's a big cliff. Yeah, Zoey, you almost walked right over it in the dark. Great. Why are you wandering around in the dark near deadly cliffs? Oh 'cause THIS GUY won't sleep because he's afraid of his DREAMS!

LUCAS Ok. We'll rest. Can’t climb down and we'll never make it up the Infinite Mountain on the other side in the dark anyhow.

ZOEY Infinite mountain? As in "so tall it can't be measured?"

LUCAS I never said this would be easy... but you have your reasons and I have a map. Remember?

She sees him adjusting his false leg. He looks at her and smiles.

ZOEY I’m looking for a ghost - of sorts. Only friend I ever had. Told me stories about this world - the wide sky, the stars . . . Taught me all the important things . . .how to pickpocket. Break out of handcuffs. You know, a real father figure. Made me feel important. A long time ago.

ZOEY No. That was just my stupid idea. Funny . . .You go to bed excited one night -because he’s going to take you the next morning to the window for the first time - to see a real live sunrise. But when you wake up, he isn’t there. And the little food you had . . . isn’t there. And any thing of any value that you’d ever been able to scrape together . . isn’t there. And any hope . . or trust . . . or faith . . isn’t there. He’d taken it all. Except one idea. (She takes out an old, well-loved letter) He left me one idea. That maybe . . just maybe . . he’d taken it all so he could come out here, where a rag doll isn’t a second class citizen and find a home for both of us. But he only left me that idea so that today I could feel like a fool . . one . . more . . .time.

LUCAS Zoey . . .

Exiting - Embarrassed and vulnerable.

I’ll scout the Infinite Mountain. You get your leg working.

LUCAS Zoey . . . don’t leave.

She’s gone. LUCAS sits and tries to adjust his leg. After a moment the drone appears unseen by LUCAS. It carefully tries to get closer and comically backs away when it thinks it will get caught. LUCAS gets up and begins to pace a bit, testing the leg. The drone follows him. LUCAS senses he is being watched and makes some quick turns. The drone ducks out of the way each time. Until LUCAS fakes him out and they are suddenly face to face. The drone speaks in a charming, simple musical language that LUCAS barely understands.

LUCAS We’ll hello little fella. Don’t fly away. I won’t hurt you. You’re a long way away from home. Did you get lost? I’ll help you out. What’s your name? (I don’t have one) No name? (Nope) You need a name. (OK) Buzz? (Ick) Z? (Better.) Warble?

The drone does a flip and lets out a little fanfare.

Warble it is. Nice to meet you Warble. I’m Lucas. You should fly home. (I want to stay with you.) You wanna stay with me? But I can’t go home yet. (I came to warn you) What’s that? (I came to warn you.) Warning? What kind of warning?

Suddenly, ZOEY runs out of the brush with a bamboo pole and tries to hit Warble out of the sky. He serves she strikes. Swerve. Strike.

LUCAS Zoey, stop. What are you doing?

ZOEY Not this time you menace.

She delivers a fatal blow. Warble falls to the ground.

Yeah me!.

LUCAS runs to Warble and who tries to fly but can’t.

LUCAS Sorry, I'm so sorry! She didn't mean it! (To ZOEY) Why did you do that?

ZOEY What? Save you from that little spy? They use them on Rag dolls all the time. Surveillance.

LUCAS Maybe this one is different.

ZOEY There’ll all the same.

LUCAS What?

ZOEY I know the type. They’re all the same.

LUCAS Like every rag doll is same?

ZOEY turns away. LUCAS holds Warble gently.

I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. You’re just upset.

LUCAS starts examining WARBLE for repair.

Doesn't look too bad. Maybe just a bent stabilizer. Oh, and your primary rotor. What else hurts? Gyro carriage? That's on the other side...

He turns WARBLE over, but slips and almost drops her. ZOEY is forced to help catch. She sees the maker's mark on WARBLE.

ZOEY She has the same mark as me.

The maker left a mark on all of us. We’re connected. Meant for something. Let’s find out what it is.

She looks at the mark and turns away. He won’t let her hand go.

LUCAS You lost someone, the idea of something great - and it hurt for a long time. My leg . . . I was angry and bitter and sad about it for years. Until one day I thought, “It’s been enough." This world is too wonderful to ignore and I have... something... I don't know. Some purpose. You do, too.

ZOEY turns away from LUCAS. She can’t look at him.

LUCAS, disappointed, returns to repairing Warble. He tries to fly but can’t.

LUCAS Hang on, little guy. It’ll get better. (He looks at ZOEY) Just hang on.

Smiling but in a desperate hurry.

I’ve got to go. She’s coming.

JUDY runs off as THE PATCHWORK TRIBE, a group of misfit, nomadic rag dolls led by RAJA, runs in and hides. They each carry a ceremonial orb/ball that they bounce in unison to create the feel of tribal drums. The drumming builds until . . .

RAJASilence! Make no sound. This is Judy's sacrifice to make and hers alone.

ZOEYWhat? We have to help her!

RAJANO! It is her time. JUMP, JUDY! Jump well!

They watch from a distance as a small doll version of JUDY is tossed on to the stage.

Be perfectly still, Judy. Patience. Have faith.

They hear the sound of enormous footsteps. Lucas and Zoey are nervous. Lucas starts to move. Raja grabs him.

Don’t move. She was made for this. She is going . . .home.

Tension mounts. Monstrous footsteps get louder.

RANIWill they accept her? With her mismatched eyes and short arms?

RAJAThey have never resisted before.

A sudden shift in the music as the monster is revealed to be a young human girl. The girl notices JUDY. Bends down to get a closer look. Her face lights up as she picks up the doll and holds her close. A joyous moment of pure love. The girl exits with JUDY. The Patchwork tribe erupts in a celebratory cheer. LUCAS and ZOEY are stunned but deeply impacted.

ZOEYWhat just happened?

RAJAJudy has found her true and rightful home. Prepare the ceremony!

The TRIBE busies themselves with preparations as RAJA shows LUCAS and ZOEY around.

Lucas. (The guy who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself) Lucas. (The best friend I’ve ever had) Lucas. (I love you)

ZOEY and the tribe exit. RAJA turns before he is gone.

WARBLE zooms back in and they are off to the Field of Hope!
