Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present
"The Artist Is Present" “TheArtistIsPresent”isthetitle of both Marina Abramovic’snew piece and her multi-decaderetrospective show. Pieces shecreated and performed from the1970’suntilnowareallre-presentedinanattempttobreathenewlifeintothesectorofPerformanceArtand,asshesaidinarecentinterview,theshowisaway“totakechargeofthehistory of performance.” Marina’sworkhasmultiplelevelsofmeaningsbutatitcoreitconfrontsthehumanconditioninordertoexpandsocialconsciousness and breakdownthe barrier between art and life.Marina’snewestperformancepiece,“The Artist Is Present”, is an openinvitation to her audience whereoneis invitedtocomeandsitwithher in silence. To exit your ownworld, enter the“art space”andbepresentwithher. Present. That one termalone made me wonder, what isMarina trying to accomplish withher presence? I wished to knowwhatdefinedtheterm“present”: “1-A moment or period intime perceptible as intermediatebetweenpastandfuture;now2-Tobring before the public 3-To offerfor observation, examination, orconsideration;showordisplay4-Tohand over or submit 5-Being withoneorothersorinthespecifiedorunderstoodplace.” Each definition fits theintentions of the action incredibly.Shewillbewithothersinaspecifiedplace; Marina has set that she willremain present the entirety ofher eleven week show, racking up
more than700hours seated in theatrium space in which this workis happening. She is part of theshow, the display; offering herselfup for observation, examination, and consideration of the audience.However,thiswork,theparticipantsmustalsoshareintheexperienceofbriningthemselvesbeforethepublic.When asked about PerformanceArtMarina said, “theperformanceis really about presence. If youescapepresence, yourperformanceisgone…youhavetobeinthehereandnow, onehundredpercent.” M o s taccurate, still,is the mosts t a n d a r ddefinition ofpresent thatrelates totime. Thereis no other way to experience thework than in the “now.” Havingbeen the second participant in theperformanceIcanonlyexplainthatit was absolutely an event outsideof the realm of “past or future.” Istill sit at that wood table, in thatwood chair, I can still see directlyintoMarina’seyes.Thisconnectionis mine; Marina directly affectedme, as I directly affected her. Shemay not remember my face butmy presence is imprinted withinthe whole experience, as she hasbecome imprinted on me. Ourtime together fits onto no timelineof my life, the moments in whichwe shared transcend the modernconstructoftime. Lossofallfacultiesregardingtotimeandspace, theconnectionis
allyoucanbefullycognicentof.Thenoiseofthespacebecomesmuffledand almost entirely muted as yousink deeper into the meditativetrace of this earnest two-sidedconnection.IrememberwhenIsatIclutchedmynotebookonmylap,however, even conscious controlovermybodyleftasIbecamepartof thework.Thecrowdsofpeople, everythingphysical, slippedawayasif washed out to sea by the ebbingtide.Myemotionalmisgivingsevenbegan to be pulled from me as Isat. A peaceful tranquility washed
over my bodyp r e s e n t i n gme with dualsensation ofg r o u n d i n gmagnetismandweightlessness.Together we
cried, itwasjoyous, genuine, andastimulating connection of psychicenergy. This piece is about radicaldisplacement, I was transportedinto another place mentally wheremy social consciousness wasremoved and my thoughts weregenuine.ThiswasnotjustapieceofartIwitnessed,itisnowahugepartofmylifeIexperienced. Evenifonthegrandschemeof things thiswouldbeconsideredan ephemeral experience, myencounter with Marina Abramovicheld more self-discoveringimportancethenyearsoftherapy.Iwas in thatmomentofnowthat isalways escaping us and I’ll hold tothatfleetingeternity, ceaselessly.
