Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe December 12

The Feast of Our Lady of

Guadalupe will be celebrated Tuesday evening, December 11th, starting with the Novena at 8:00pm, and followed by the Mass in her honor.

continue the celebration in the Deacon Hilliard Lee Hall. All are invited.

My dear Parishioners, This past week, when I read the first reading for today’s liturgy of the First Sunday of Advent, “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into prun-ing hooks…” I thought immediately of the words of Pope Francis last Sunday in Nagasaki calling for a “world without nuclear weapons.” On the first day of his first visit to Japan, the Holy Father called the pos-session and use of nuclear weapons “immoral.” He went on to visit Hiroshima where he was deeply moved as he listened to the accounts of several victims of those horrendous bombings 74 years ago. He lamented the fact that “In a world where millions of children and fam-ilies live in inhumane conditions, the money that is squandered and the fortunes made through the manufac-ture, upgrading, maintenance and sale of ever more de-structive weapons are an affront crying out to heaven.” As American Catholics, we have to be reminded of this because our nation and its military/industrial complex are still heavily involved in what the Pope describes above. And it is good for us to hear his words as we begin our Advent preparation for the celebration of the birth of our Prince of Peace as well as his coming to judge the world at the end of time. In today’s Gospel, Jesus himself bids us to “Stay awake.” He wants us to be alert to what is going on in our world and to what he calls us to do about it. In our second reading today, we hear Paul reminding the Romans—and us—that we are called to throw off the darkness and start living in the light. War and its threat of world annihilation creates a world of dread and darkness for everyone. As Christians, we have a duty to dispel that darkness by bringing the light of peace into the lives of others by the way we live our own lives. Let the goal of our Advent preparation be peace—within ourselves, among ourselves, and with all others. In the words of that wonderful hymn, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

Please consider sponsoring a child and pick a snowflake or two. The Giving Tree is orga-nized by The Saint Vincent De Paul Society here at Saint Paul of the Cross Catholic Church. Thank You! The 2020 Workbook for Lectors is available now at the parish office, Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm. The cost is still only $10. December 7-8 Second Collection for Retired Religious, “Thanks to support from the Retirement Fund for Religious, we are now in a much better position to care for our elders,” writes a religious sister. Your donation helps her religious community and hundreds of others provide for aging members and plan for long-term needs. Please give to next week’s Retirement Fund for Religious collection. Thank you.

Dear Church Family:

Thank you so much for the thoughtful card as I continue to heal. It has been a long ten months for me but I counted and I am still counting on your prayers and support. Sincerely,

News about the New Parish Directory: In order to reflect accu-rate information in the new directory, we are in need of a CENSUS. Today, we will have the Registration Forms of parish-ioners whose last names begin with A through H. These parishioners will need to go to the Conference Room 1 and meet volunteers, who will guide and assist them through this process. Thank you for your cooperation. Next Sunday, December 8: Last names starting with I to P.

We are delighted that you have received the two top awards for the boys cross country team at Blessed Trini-ty. His teammates vot-ed to give Joshua "The St. Sebastian Award" for his leadership, academic, and athletic success. Head Coach Greg Johnson presented him with "The Most Valuable Runner" award. We are so proud of you, and on behalf of your parish community, Saint Paul of the Cross, we off you our congratulations and all good wishes and blessings!

Congratulations Joshua!
