Immerse yourself...Bishops Lydeard is a charming village situated to the North West of Taunton below the western edge of the Quantock Hills. It retains its mature heart with a church, primary school, library, health centre, pubs, garage, Post Office and shops.

The village of Bishops Lydeard belonged in the earliest times to the Bishop of Bath and Wells. In 1291 King Edward I granted a charter to Robert Burnell, Bishop of Bath and Wells, to hold a weekly fair in the village, and two annual fairs, each for six days, at the Feasts of the Nativity and the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The original charter is still in existence and was acquired some years ago by the village and is now kept in the church.

St Mary’s Church is prominently situated within the village, built around 1450 of red sandstone, with a tall, typically Somerset tower embellished with facings of creamy Ham Hill stone. It is understood there has been a church on the present site since Saxon times, but the oldest part of the present building is the north arcade, which dates from the end of the thirteenth century. Much of the interior and the Chancel was rebuilt by the Victorians, although in the nave there are carved bench ends, mostly carved by a group of intinerant Flemish wood-carvers around 1540 and are rare examples of extensive woodwork from this period.

Discover... Treat yourself...Instantly transporting you to a bygone age, Bishops Lydeard Railway Station is a heritage railway station and is the southern terminus for trains on the West Somerset Railway.

The station first opened in 1862 with the original Taunton to Watchet line. On opening, the station had just one platform on the line’s west side and a house for the station master.

Today the station has two operational platforms, the station master’s house is now privately owned, and the goods shed has been restored and is used as a visitor centre and museum.

The neighbouring village of Cotford St Luke is home to a divine restaurant called The Chapel. This hidden gem offers a mouth watering Thai and wood-fired oven pizza menu along with a relaxing atmosphere perfect to unwind after a busy day. The Chapel is also a hub of entertainment offering quiz nights, live music, Christmas fayres and so much more. This unique restaurant has something for everyone.

Indulge... The highly acclaimed Cedar Falls Health Farm & Spa is approximately 1.2 miles away from Station View and is a welcoming retreat. Built of locally quarried red sandstone, the country house dates from the 1700s and is listed as being of architectural and historical interest, set in over 40 acres of grounds of mature gardens, woods, lakes and a 9 hole golf course, amidst beautiful Somerset countryside.

Explore...The Quantock Hills are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and form the western border of Sedgemoor and the Somerset Levels. The Hills distinctive character, natural beauty and cultural heritage are so outstanding that it is in the nation’s interest to safeguard them. The area received its protected status in 1956.

Situated between Taunton and Bridgwater, stretching to the sea at the Bristol Channel and measuring just twelve miles by four, the Quantock Hills are an area of wilderness and tranquillity and offer extensive views over much of Somerset and across to the Welsh coast. Panoramic views lead you through coast, heath and combe and are popular with walkers, horse riders, mountain bikers and tourists, who explore the paths and take in the spectacular countryside views, rocky Jurassic coastline, exposed heathland summits, deep wooded combes, undulating farmland and attractive villages all within this protected landscape.

Ash Common Nature Reserve is around one mile from Station View and was the first Local Nature Reserve in Somerset, designated by Taunton Deane Borough Council in November 1995.

It covers 20.42 hectares and consists of a variety of habitats, such as wet heath, semi-natural deciduous woodland, scrub, bracken and ponds. The perfect place to be at one with wildlife and is enjoyed by dog walkers and keen ramblers alike. There is a mapped trail available to walk that will also lead you to the neighbouring village of Halse.

Also exuding a real aura of bygone times, is The Bishops Lydeard Mill and Rural Life Museum, The Mill has been painstakingly and precisely restored over many years and the Mill and the attached Mill House have been cited as places of historical interest, with a Grade II conservation listing.

There were originally two mills in the village, Higher and Lower Mill, supplying the area with flour. The overshot water wheel weighs over two tonnes and is driven by water from Back Stream which originates in the Brendon Hills.

The station is also the headquarters of the West Somerset RailwayAssociation which provides volunteer support for the railway. The Associations’ Quantock Belle dining car train is also based here, recreating that wonderful, nostalgic atmosphere of the great days of steam.

carriages take the 20-mile route through stunning Somerset countryside and coastlines, stopping at various stations along the route including Williton, Dunster and Watchet and terminates on the Somerset coast at Minehead.

The Rural Life Museum focuses on traditional trades and crafts including a wheelwright’s shop, cooper’s shop, saddler’s shop, blacksmith’s shop, Victorian kitchen and the Dusty Miller’s tearoom serving homemade cakes. The current owners donate proceeds from the entrance fee and tearoom to local charities.

Creating outstanding homes for life...

Having recently purchased a My Home property with Summerfield, I highly recommend dealing with them.

My property has been built to an excellent standard and nothing has been too much trouble from completion through to helping me settle in and ensuring all is well.

Everyone I have dealt with has been hugely professional and friendly. Buying my first home has been far more straightforward than I imagined and I’m very happy with my new home.

Miss G

We pride ourselves on our excellent customer aftercare...

We are proud of the reputation Summerfield Homes has earned for constructing homes of the highest quality throughout the

West Country for over 30 years.

Your new home will undergo a series of inspections before we are ready to hand it over to you. Building Control Inspections and

inspections by our Home Warranty provider are complementedby our own rigorous checks. This will ensure that the standard of finish meets the standard that both we, and you, would expect.

Our commitment continues for two years after completing your purchase. During this time our Customer Care Department is on

hand if you need to report any problems or faults.

We are thrilled to be living in this comfortable house as it has such an impressive specification and more than lives up to the

promise offered by the show homes. Plus it is on an amazing development. Our journey to this point has not been

straightforward, as the first buyer for our previous house pulled out at the last minute, but Summerfield kept the faith and helped and

encouraged us without pressuring us too much while we found our second and successful buyer. Four weeks after moving in we

have been impressed by the aftercare which has been second to none. Throughout the somewhat protracted purchase process, and

through to completion, the Sales Office team has been very encouraging and all we could wish for.
