NEWS, NOTES & STORYLINES 5 LOFTON LIFTING DEFENSIVE FRONT: After missing the first four games of the season with an injury,

junior defensive end Tramond Lofton has made an immediate impact for the Statesmen in the last three outings, totaling 19 tackles, 3.0 tackles-for-loss and a sack. The Waynesboro, Miss., native has also broken up one pass and forced a fumble for Jerry Partridge’s defensive unit.

5 SCIORROTTA ALONE IN DSU HISTORY WITH 306, APPROACHES GSC RECORD: With Delta State’s career scoring record firmly in his grasp, senior kicker Vince Sciorrotta looks to add another notch to the belt this weekend versus Valdosta State, as he needs just three points to become the GSC’s career scoring leader by kick. Sciorrotta became the first Delta State player ever to tally 300 points or more in a career, joining only five other players in the history of the Gulf South Conference who have eclipsed the 300-point plateau. The Gainesville, Ga., native, enters Saturday’s game with 306 career points after making 38 field goals and 179 extra points in his four-year career. He is 8-of-12 on field goals and 27-of-28 on extra points this season for the Statesmen. Former Valdosta State kicker Will Rhody (2002-2004) owns the GSC record for points scored kicking with 308.

5 PETERSON BREAKS CAREER KICK RETURN RECORD: Senior running back and return specialist LaDarion Peterson broke the Delta State career kick return yards record, returning five kickoffs for 80 yards against West Alabama, giving him 1,211 career kick return yards. The Woodville, Miss., native, who was named First Team All-GSC last year as a returner, is the fourth member of the 1,000-Kick Return Yards Club. Peterson broke Jesse Jackson’s (1974-77) school record of 1,197 yards. After last week’s 90 yards of returns at West Flordia, Peterson has amassed 1,287 kick return yards.

5 DELTA DEFENSE CONTINUES GROWTH: Jerry Partridge has made an immediate impact in his first season as defensive coordinator for the Statesmen. Entering week seven, the Statesmen rank No. 1 in the Gulf South Conference in rush defense (74.7 ypg) and sacks (22) while ranking second in scoring defense, allowing 18.1 points per game. Delta State ranks fourth in total defense at 329.3 yards per game.

5 CLEDANORD CAUSING A RUCKUS IN BACKFIELD: Outside linebacker Ovenson Cledanord (6-2/210/Jr.) has been a major thorn in the side of opponents this season, tallying 55 tackles, 5.0 sacks, 10.0 tackles-for-loss, three forced fumbles and an interception. He is currently second in the GSC in TFLs and sacks, while leading the GSC in forced fumbles (3).

5 GROUND & POUND: The Statesmen enter Saturday’s bout with Valdosta State leading the GSC in rushing, averaging 226.0 yards per game on the ground. DSU is one of only two schools to top the 200-yards per game mark. Senior Chris Robinson, who ranks third in the GSC in rushing yards and rushing yards per game, averages 85.0 yards per game and 5.1 yards per carry through the first seven games of the season. Breck Ruddick (5th, 62.7 yards per game) is the league’s top rushing quarterback with LaDarion Peterson (17th, 34.3 yards per game) also helping spearhead the rushing attack of the Statesmen.

5 MCBRIDE LEADING BY EXAMPLE: Senior Missouri Southern transfer JohnQuavious McBride enters week eight of the season ranked second in the GSC in tackles with 59, averaging 8.4 tackles per game. In last week’s 28-25 win over West Florida, the Atlanta native scored what proved to the game-winning touchdown, returning a blocked field goal 65 yards for a score in the fourth quarter.

5 WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE: Delta State is 23-2 under head coach Todd Cooley when winning the turnover battle, including a 5-0 mark this season.

5 LEADING AT THE HALF: Delta State is 26-0 under head coach Todd Cooley when leading at half-time. The

Statesmen are 7-14 when trailing and 0-2 when tied at the half.

5 RACE TO 30: The Statesmen are 28-5 all-time when scoring 30 or more points against an opponent under head coach Todd Cooley.

5 BALLS & BELL WELCOMED INTO DSU SPORTS HALL OF FAME: Former DSU All-Americans Karl Balls (DE | 1983-86) and Rory Bell (SS | 1996-2000) were inducted into the DSU Sports Hall of Fame on Satur-day, Oct. 7 at Parker Field-McCool Stadium. Balls lettered for the Statesmen from 1983-1986 for coach Jim-my “Red” Parker, while earning All-American honors on the defensive line in 1986. In 1984, Balls finished with 9.5 sacks to rank second in single-season history, while his 19.5 career sacks still rank fifth in program history. Bell helped lead one of the greatest turnarounds in Mississippi football history and propel the Statesmen to the 2000 NCAA Division II National Championship. The New Orleans, La., native lettered for coaches Todd Knight and Steve Campbell from 1996-2000. A unanimous All-America selection as a senior in 2000 and a three-time All-GSC pick, Bell finished his career with 282 tackles, including the second most in a single season (138, 2000). TODD COOLEYHead Coach | 5th Year (30-19)

Arkansas Tech (1999)

@CoachToddCooley

5 Todd Cooley will be entering his fifth season as head coach of the Delta State University Statesman football program. Cooley became the 19th coach in program history on Friday, Jan. 25, 2012. In his four seasons as head coach of the Statesmen, Cooley is 30-19 overall and 16-16 against the GSC.

5 The Statesmen got off to a quick start in 2016 before injuries began taking a toll on the team, ultimately leading to a 2-8* finish. Chris Robinson led NCAA DII in scoring at 14.4 points per game after scoring 24 touchdowns. DSU was second in the league in both scoring (36.9) and total offense at 449.4 yards per game.

5 With expectations riding high entering the 2015 season, the Statesmen raced out of the gate to a 4-0 record and No. 5 national ranking. Unfortunately, the ride would be short-lived, as injuries began to mount and derailed a title run for DSU. The Statesmen finished the year 6-5 overall and 2-5 in GSC play.

5 In 2014, Cooley led the Statesmen to their seventh GSC title and eighth appearance in the NCAA Division II Football Championship Playoff. For his efforts, Cooley was named GSC co-Coach of the Year for a second time.

5 Statesmen head coach Todd Cooley tied former Steve Campbell for the second fastest coach to accumulate 20 victories, accomplishing the feat in 25 games. Cooley led DSU to a 7-3 mark in 2013 during his first season and followed up that performance with a 9-2 record in 2014 and a share of the GSC title. The Nashville, Arkansas, native started out the season 4-0 to get his 20th win in a 40-0 victory over Albany State at Parker Field-McCool Stadium (Sept. 26, 2015).

5 In his first campaign as head coach, Cooley guided the Statesmen to a 7-3 overall record and a second place finish in the Gulf South Conference. Inheriting a team that went 3-7 the year before, the high-energy Cooley built a cohesive family atmosphere in less than nine months. That energy helped feed a program’s turnaround in just one season.

5 For his efforts, Cooley was named Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year by his peers in the league. In all, 11 Statesmen were named to the All-GSC squad, including GSC Freshman of the Year Tyler Sullivan, who quarterbacked DSU to a 4-1 mark as a starter.

5 DSU averaged 40.0 points per game offensively, while averaging 472.2 yards per game. The Statesmen pulled off three victories over nationally ranked opponents after defeating No. 21 North Alabama 37-34, No. 14 Tarleton State 38-36 and No. 24 Valdosta State 63-55.

5 Known as one of the top offensive coordinators in the country, Cooley brought his high-octane system to Delta State after serving as the offensive coordinator at Northwestern Louisiana (2009-2012), Central Arkansas (2005-2008) and Arkansas Tech (2004).

5 In three years running the NSU offense, Cooley’s established the Demons as one of the top units in the Southland Conference. The 2012 season saw Brad Henderson finish the season ranked seventh in the SLC with 181-of-330 passes completed for 1,874 yards with 14 touchdowns and only four interceptions. The Demons averaged 24.1 points per game and ranked fifth in the league in scoring.

5 Born September 7, 1975, Cooley is married to the former Lisa Gatlin of Conway, Ark. He is the son of Lynne and the late Don Cooley of Nashville, Ark.

2017 STATESMEN FOOTBALL GAME NOTES GAME 8 | VALDOSTA STATE

5 One of the Gulf South Conference's oldest and most historic venues, Travis E. Parker Field at Horace L. McCool Stadium has served as the home of the Statesmen since it opened in 1970. Delta State has enjoyed tremendous success at Parker-McCool under its last four coaches, posting an impressive 63-23 record.

5 Formerly known as Delta Field and Travis E. Parker Field, the 8,500 seat stadium was completed in time for the 1970 season. In 1984, the field was renamed to honor former Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees member, Travis E. Parker, a tireless supporter of Delta State University and the Delta area communities.

5 In 2007, DSU honored long-time coach and administrator Horace McCool by naming the stadium in his honor. McCool was 76-48-3 in 14 seasons as head coach of the Statesmen and was instrumental in running the Department of Athletics as Director of Athletics. During his time as AD, McCool helped revive the Lady Statesmen basketball program, which blossomed into a national power under the legendary Margaret Wade.

5 The current facility replaced the “old” Delta Field, which is located between Sillers Coliseum and the Hugh Ellis Walker Alumni-Foun-dation House on the Delta State campus. The Statesmen have enjoyed a 247-125-15 mark at home.

5 The two-level press facility includes booths for radio, film, coaches, and working press, as well as to a snack kitchen and restroom. The press box is completely enclosed, with the exception of the second-level film deck, and is climate controlled for year-round comfort and convenience.

5 Parker-McCool has gone through several recent renovations, including the installation of artificial turf in the summer of 2014, a press box revitalization project in May of 2013, and the addition of a new scoreboard/video board in the fall of 2008. Past additions have included the chairback seats in 1993 and the creation of a picnic area in the southwest corner of Parker Field in 2001.

5 In the summer of 2014, Delta State began construction on a new visitor’s concession stand and bathroom on the southeast corner of Parker-McCool.

5 In his first season as head coach of the Statesmen, coach Todd Cooley led Delta State to a perfect 4-0 record at Parker-McCool. The Nashville, Arkansas native is the first head coach since Ron Roberts to go undefeated at home in his first season at DSU.

5 Delta State has an 8-2 (.800) record in NCAA Division II postseason play. The Statesmen have won their last four playoff games at Parker-McCool.

5 The Statesmen went 2-0 at Parker-McCool in the 2000 NCAA playoffs en route to the national championship. DSU defeated Valdosta State (49-12) and North Dakota State (34-16) at home with road wins over Catawba (20-14) and Bloomsburg (63-34) in the NCAA title game.

5 Trevar Deed set a DSU postseason record with 16 receptions for 203 yards and four touchdowns in a 55-34 loss to North Alabama in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division II playoffs at Parker-McCool.

5 In DSU’s 45-7 victory over Shaw University in the first round of the 2007 NCAA playoffs, senior linebacker and Harlon Hill finalist Michael Eubanks set a new NCAA DII single-game sack record with five versus the Hawks.
