SERIES SNAPSHOT—The Statesmen and the Nittany Lions will meet for the 58th time this afternoon, with Hobart holding a 33-23-1 series lead. The teams first met in 1914 when the Statesmen secured a 10-3 win. Hobart also boasts the longest winning streak in the series, claiming 11 in a row between 1969 and 1988. Penn State has the momentum of late however, posting victories in six of the past seven meetings. CARDIAC KIDS—When Hobart and Penn State get together its a good bet the final score will be tight. Forty-six percent of the meetings have been decided (if at all) by two goals or less. The Statesmen are 10-8 in one-goal games against the Nittany Lions, including a 2-2 mark in overtime, and 4-3 in contests decided by just two goals. The squads also forged a 4-4 tie way back in 1923. AT THE OTHER ExTREmE—With just five games decided by 10 or more goals, blow- outs are much rarer than nail-biters in the Hobart-Penn State series. The Statesmen hold the upper hand in that category as well, sporting a 4-1 record when the margin of victory is 10 or more, including the series’ most lopsided decision, a 24-5 win in 1972 en route to Hobart’s first national championship. WHEN LAST WE mET—On April 7, 2007, in State College, Pa., Hobart took a 7-6 lead on an extra-man goal by MIKE SUITS to start the second half. Unfortunately for the Statesmen, it was their final goal of the afternoon, as Penn State shutout Hobart over the final 29 minutes while scoring six straight in a 12-7 ECAC victory. The Nittany Lions’ Max Van Arsdale led all scorers with four points (2-2), while Statesmen CHRIS DAVID ’07 and JEFF COLBURN produced two goals apiece. PSU goalie Drew Adams was credited with 15 saves and a game-high 10 ground balls, while Max Silberlicht made 11 stops for Hobart. BACK TO THE BOZ—Hobart returns to the natural grass of legendary Boswell Field today for the first time since April 29, 2006. The primary home of Statesmen lacrosse since 1975, Boswell Field is slated to undergo exciting renovations as a part of the $160 million Campaign for the Colleges. A new, wider, artificial surface, new seating, expanded locker rooms, and lights will make the Boz one of the premier facilities in collegiate lacrosse. ROADKILL—The Statesmen are coming off an impressive 12-4 victory over the Fairfield Stags last Saturday. Hobart’s defense was superb, carrying a shutout into the second half for the first time since March 13, 2004 (at Lehigh). Goalie MAX SILBERLICHT turned back nine of the 11 shots he faced in 54 minutes of action, while defenseman RICKY EVANS scooped up a career and game-high seven ground balls. DARYL VELTMAN led the offense with three goals and an assist. BROKEN RECORD—With his hat trick against Syracuse, DARYL VELTMAN raised his career total to 93, becoming the highest scoring Division I Statesman. JAMIE BRES- LIN ’01 established the previous benchmark at 92. BROKEN RECORD II—With four points at Fairfield, DARYL VELTMAN raised his career total to 146, three more than Hobart’s previous Division I standard set by NATE HILL ’05 (64g 79a). Veltman boasts 96 career goals and 50 career assists. CENTURY WATCH—DARYL VELTMAN needs four goals to become just the 16th Statesmen to score 100 in his career.
