States of Matter
Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma
Well-Known States of Matter
• Solid• Ice, chairs, tables, ect
• Liquid• Liquid water, milk, juice, ect
• Gas• Water vapor, oxygen, hydrogen, ect
Solid• Solid is a state of matter in which the
molecules are compact and close together, with very little movement.
• Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume.
Liquid• Liquid is a state of matter in which
the molecules are a little further apart, allowing for more movement (which is why liquids can change shape).
• Liquids have a definite volume but they take on the shape of their container.
Gas• Gas is a state of matter in which
the molecules are so far apart, there is a lot of movement.
• Gases have no definite shape or volume.
Name the StateName which state each diagram is.
Solid
Gas
Liquid
Plasma
• The fourth state is plasma.• Occurs when a gas is heated to the
point that it loses all of its electrons.• Occurs in stars and neon lights.
