Welcome message from the ILC 2017 Honorary President

Welcome to the 52nd annual EASL meeting. The International Liver Congress™.

Amsterdam has a fine history of academic pursuit and clinical service in hepatology and is an excellent venue for our 2017 meeting. Based on a unique canal system it is also an attractive city for accompanying partners.

It was in 1973 that I attended my first EASL meeting in Vittel, Eastern France. This 13th meeting turned out to be very lucky for me: having just finished my PhD on the immunological role of the liver with Roddy McSween in Glasgow, I was introduced to Sheila Sherlock who offered me a lectureship at the Royal Free. This began my career in hepatology and since then, I attended the EASL annual meeting every year for the following 40 years.

Over this period much of liver disease has become treatable if not curable. The first advances were in liver physiology but in many ways the most important have been in the viral liver diseases – beauty is in the eye of the beholder- but now we are seeing therapeutic advances in the fields of alcohol and obesity related disease and liver cancer and gene and stem cell therapy, established at the ‘proof of principle’ level, which will hopefully be major areas for clinical development in the next decade. The International Liver Congress™ aims to provide the current ‘state of the art’ for the practising clinician and also a projection into the future. I look forward to hearing about these advances at this coming meeting.

Almost as important as the content of the meeting and prospects for career networking, is the opportunity to meet past friends and make future acquaintances from across Europe and increasingly from the four corners of the globe. At a time when Britain has decided to leave the European Union, it is even more important to maintain clinical and scientific collaboration and friendships, and to recognise that the vast majority of NHS and university research staff in Britain voted to stay in the European Union!

I hope you enjoy and benefit from this year’s meeting both at a social and academic level and that this year even more than 10,000 people, our current record, attend.

Best wishes,
