Members present: All members were present.
Alternate members: There were no alternate members.
Advisor Present: One advisor, Mr. Brian Schneider, was present.
Members absent: No members were absent.
Committee Chairs: The committee co-chairs were Ty Casey of the Kindred FFA Chapter and Nicollette Bitz of the Napoleon FFA
Chapter.
Date and location of meeting: The date of the meeting was June 2nd, 2015, and we met in the North East corner of the convention
hall.
Report: (include general discussion points, items reviewed, etc…)
We reviewed all contests at district leadership, as well as state parliamentary procedure. Major discussion points were on changing
the format of parliamentary procedure at the district and state levels, and including a follow-up letter in the job interview contest.
Action Recommended: We as a committee recommend to change the parliamentary procedure event at the district level by
requiring secretary’s minutes to be kept during the demonstration, and that formal minutes are then written by the president and
secretary.
We as a committee also recommend altering the parliamentary procedure event at the state level by requiring secretary’s minutes
to be kept during the demonstration, and that formal minutes are then written by the president and secretary. Also, we
recommend removing the president from the ready room during prep time, and only allowing five minutes for preparation. Also,
during the final four round, we recommend introducing the asking of questions of the officers following their demonstration, with
a maximum number of 7 questions per demonstration.
We as a committee also recommended that in order for the job interview event at districts to be more similar in style to the state
contest, all job interview participants will be asked to write a follow-up letter for the judges. We recommend that this letter be
judged but not counted towards the overall score of the participant.

dismissed at 10:42 a.m.
Report:
The committee discussed creating an additional officer retreat in the Western part of North Dakota. Since
there is only one officer retreat in the Northeastern part of the state, the committee felt this would better
accommodate chapters in the west so they would not have to travel great distances. The committee discussed
possibly moving the Land and Range judging Career Development Events to a different time. If this suggestion was
facilitated, we feel more members would compete in these events. We touched base on the state fair activities.
These include tractor driving and FFA livestock Shows. As co-chairs we felt it that the idea of starting a FFA
Summer Camp for our members. The committee thought this was something that members would benefit from and
enjoy attending. The majority of the committee feels that this idea should be pushed.
Action Recommended:
The dates of Land and Range Judging should be evaluated for a better time for the members to compete.
There should be evaluations for locations and times for which a state wide FFA Camp could be hosted by the North
Dakota FFA Association.

Create a more definitive goal under the youth group cooperation section about the leaders of the different organizations meeting
and communicating more often.
Develop an award for an FFA member that could be given out to recognize them for creating and successfully implementing a
living to serve plan.
Under Leadership, section 10, the acronym NDVATA under the steps should be changed to NDAAE.
Under conduct of meetings, section 2, the words “and ambassador,” should be deleted from the goals and steps sections.
Under Scholarship, section 2, add a goal to utilize all scholarship money available for WLC in the current year.
Under Public Relations, section 4, add a step to publicize the opportunity to invite state officers to speak at chapter banquets in an
effort to make sure that new advisors are aware of the opportunity.

resolved that students can sign up Monday night for organized tournaments, games, or similar activities.
Resolution 3:
Whereas; with the ever-increasing prevalence of technology among the members, therefore be it resolved that a social media committee is
formed. This committee would consist of an advisor and four members to create, regulate, and publicize Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and
Snapchat throughout the convention week.

dress standards are better enforced at CDE’s.
Resolution 10:
Whereas; the apparel standards for the dances are unclear, therefore be it resolved that a written dress code for the dances is formed,
approved, and sent to all of the chapters prior to state convention.
Resolution 11:
Whereas; the tours do not cover a great range of interests, therefore be it resolved that a wider variety of tours be offered throughout the
week.
Resolution 12:
Whereas; in order to expand the CDE offerings to fit the interest of more members, therefore be it resolved that the Environmental and

State Officers Retiring Addresses
“Taking Chances”
Chance Lundberg, State President
I first thought about running for state office back when I was a junior, I remember thinking about all the things that a
state officer does throughout their year of service and one of the things I thought would be the most difficult to do would be to
give a retiring address, to try to say so much in a short amount of time. Well it looks like I’m here, the most difficult part, the
RA, but I’ll get to more on that later. FFA, FFA is an organization which gives endless opportunities, and I have talked a lot
about these opportunities throughout the year. Now, why would I bring it up again? Well one thing I have learned in my life is
that you have to be willing to take opportunities and not be afraid of failure. That you have to be willing to take a risk to
succeed, and not just a little risk but to go all out. You see, in order to succeed you first must be willing to fail. You are not
going to be good at everything you do the first time, but remember, mistakes are the opportunity to grow.
So let’s rewind to the beginning, back to running for state office, I kept thinking about being an officer and needing to
do an RA but I decided that I wasn’t going to let just the one final thing in the year deter me from doing all the other things
that officers get to do. I didn’t let that one small detail get in the way of the big picture. This was one of those times that I took
the chance, the risk, I didn’t even know if I was going to get elected and if I did would I be able to do my duty as an officer? I
set a goal to become an officer with what knowledge and skill I had, and now I’m standing up here because I took that chance,
I took the opportunity.
After this RA we will be giving out lots of awards for the Career Development Events you have competed in this past
week. I remember competing in meats judging. I started judging as a 7th grader and for those of you who don’t know meats
judging, it has lots of information to know and remember. State convention rolled around my sophomore year and I was on a
pretty solid team, I mean we had been studying all week, pretty much the whole time except for the dance of course. Friday
morning was here and we were up on stage for the gold team awards, Your State Champion Meats team is….. not the Killdeer
FFA team, we finished second. Now this could have been the point where I said enough, I’ve done this for several years, we
worked so hard and we haven’t won. But I decided to stick with it, I took another chance. That following year at convention
we won, the lesson I learned from this wasn’t just about taking a chance and winning but knowing when to keep going. I
learned from my mistakes and pushed to new limits I didn’t think I could even achieve. FFA I believe is the one place that can
truly prepare you for life, because it gives you the opportunity to succeed but more importantly that opportunity to learn from
your failures. All of you sitting here today have already taken the first step of being here, and this organization will give you
the opportunity to take the next step and the next step, to keep going, to learn from your mistakes, whether it be grabbing the
bull by the horns, never leaving home for second, or choosing your seat. North Dakota FFA, always be taking chances.

Be a Coffee Bean
Seena Hagen, State Secretary
I am a coffee bean. No, I’m not from Columbia and I didn’t grow from seeds in the ground but I have been known to
wake Keylee and Sam up in morning a time or two this year.
What do I mean by coffee bean? Four years ago I had to present the FFA Creed at our chapter banquet. I was
the most nervous I had ever been in my entire life. I had been carrying a copy of the creed with me everywhere I went and
studying it every chance I got. I was terrified I would miss a word, mix up paragraphs or worse yet have my mind go blank
and forget the entire thing. I didn’t want to embarrass myself in front of everyone. Most you in this room can relate and have
faced similar challenges. If you haven’t your time is coming.
I heard a story that helped me get through my situation and I want to share it with you today….
A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know
how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling.
It seemed that, as one problem was solved, a new one arose. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots
with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she
placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans.
She let them sit and boil, without saying a word. In about twenty minutes, she turned off the burners. She fished the
carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she poored the coffee out into
a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me, what do you see?"
"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," the young woman replied. The mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots.
She did and noted that they were soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed
the harden egg. Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich flavor. The daughter then
asked, "What does it mean, mother?"
She then explained that the carrot, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity– the boiling water.
However, each one reacted differently.
The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak.
The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside
of the egg became hard and stiff.
However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and
created something new and flavorful.
“Which are you,” she asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an
egg, or a coffee bean? “
At that banquet I was sitting there thinking about everything that could possibly go wrong and I realized I had two
options… I could run out of room and say I got the flu or I could walk my size five shoes on stage and do the best I could.
When the president of my chapter stated that Seena Hagen would now give the FFA creed I had to decide if I was going to be
a carrot, egg or a coffee bean.
I decided to be a coffee bean. I didn’t let the heat or the pressure get to me. I decided that I was bigger than the fear
that was holding me back. Like the coffee bean I wanted to make an impact on everything. I didn’t want adversity to make me
weak or change who I am on the inside.
Whether we like it or not, adversity is part of life. Overcoming adversity is one of the biggest hurdles we face.
Problems, large and small, present themselves to us throughout our whole existence. Regardless of how sharp, clever, or
happy-go-lucky we are, we will encounter struggles, challenges, difficulties and at times, heart wrenching moments. How we
handle these problems define who we are. So are you going to be a carrot and egg or a coffee bean?

“Don’t Leave Home for Second”
State Vice President – Ceph Dockter
We all have those memories of our child hood that just stick in our memory, One memory that I can recall I used to find
myself crawling to the top of the highest bookshelf in our house and behind almost everything on the top shelf, hardly visible
to anybody standing on the floor was a little trophy. When I finally learned to read I found that the bottom of this trophy read
“Dairy Cattle Selection, 1982” and on the top was a golden buffalo. This really confused me because growing up on a farm
and a dairy farm none the less I was sure that the animal on top was not a dairy cow. (Head to the podium to grab the trophy)
I’m sure a few of you are confused as to what I’m talking about so I brought something with me that I hope will help clarify a
little bit. This is the trophy that reads “Dairy Cattle Selection, 1982”.
I didn’t know anything about this trophy other than it belonged to my father. It wasn’t until I was in seventh grade year that I
and attended my first FFA meeting that I started to understand what it was. These trophies are given to the person that is the
best in any FFA competition. What most of us know as the coveted Baby Bison.
When I returned home from that first FFA meeting, I remember my dad asking me “Ceph, do you think you would ever run
for a chapter office” I told him “you know dad, I attended my first meeting and I’m a member, I think that’s good enough”
A short year later I found myself coming home as an assistant officer in the Medina chapter. my dad asked me again “Ceph,
would you ever run for a constitutional office?” I said “well I hear all the Sentinel has to do is sit by the door, I might do that”
so two years later I found myself as Treasurer of the Medina chapter Dad asked “Ceph, Would you ever consider running for
President” I told him that someone else wanted to be President and that I was just going to run for Vice President.
Just like all my other office projections, My senior year I found myself as President of the Medina FFA chapter and as
president of the chapter I was asked by my father and members in the community, Ceph would you ever run to be a state
officer. When someone would ask me this I would assure them that I was not interested in state office and I was just going to
give college a shot. And you can see how that idea played out. This has been such an opportunity I will forever be grateful for
and I’m glad I took.
Through my years in FFA serving as an officer and competing in a variety of events I carried a quote with me. A quote that
became my favorite the moment I head it. It comes from a Dakota native, a plains cowboy, and a rough stock rider by the
Name of Casey Tibbs, Shortly before his death Casey Tibbs was quoted saying “Never Leave Home for Second” my junior
and senior year especially I never left home for second. I so desperately wanted and worked so hard for that coveter Baby
Bison, something that just a few short years ago I had no idea what it was but now I just had to have it. I wanted to be the
best, just like my dad and wouldn’t be happy with anything else.
Leaving the competitive side of FFA this past year I walked away without a baby bison. Everything that I had wanted,
everything that I had worked so hard for didn’t happen. All I could think about in the weeks and months that fallowed state
convention is that I had failed. but in It wasn’t until the past few months I have come to realize that I had not failed and in fact
I walked away with something much more important than a baby bison. I walked away with the ability to speak to people,
build relationships, network with people, career skills, the ability to leave something better then when I found it. I walked
away with the ability to lead. I never left home for second, did I come home second, third, fourth, or even fifth? Yes. But
when I never left home for second I walked away with those corer skills, relationship skills, the ability to speak to people and
that’s much more important than any trophy could ever be. When I never left home for second I was dedicated, I had
motivation, a drive that pushed me to run for a chapter office and to run for state office. These few words have been a constant
motivation that’s helped get me here today. So North Dakota FFA I challenge you, when you leave home, in whatever it may
be, NEVER LEAVE HOME FOR SECOND!

“Grab the Bull by the Horns”
State Treasurer Klay Oland
Do any of you guys know a goofy looking fellow by the name of Ceph Dockter? I didn’t actually know Ceph or any
other member of the Medina chapter while I was in high school. I would see them at every contest we went to but I had never
had a conversation with them or even said hello. Why? Because I HATED Medina. I was, or rather I still am, a very
competitive person and week after week, no matter how good our livestock judging team did, it was always Medina who got
announced as the high team at the contest. If their bus had broken down and they never made it to the contest, I probably
would have been O.K. with that at the time. I met some of my best friends through livestock judging in FFA, but I probably
missed out on meeting a lot of other great people because of my stubborn pride and competitive nature. Where are the
Napoleon livestock judgers at? I’m not going to lie, these guys weren’t exactly my favorite bunch when I was still judging
either but they did a great job this year. They grabbed the bull by the horns and won the state contest. For all you out there
who might hate Napoleon for being so darn good all the time, instead you should be thanking them for pushing you to be
better by trying to beat them. I challenge all of you guys to meet your competitors and get to know them instead of avoiding
and despising them. Chances are they’re some pretty cool people; they are in FFA after all.
How many athletes do we have out here today? Everybody who plays a sport go ahead and stand up, come on stand
up. Take a look around, we’re all passionate about FFA but the majority of us come from small schools where we’re involved
in sports, FFA, and many other activities. Everybody can go ahead and sit down again. It’s tough to try and balance all of
these activities, especially when you are very passionate about more than one of them. I was one of those kids who was
involved in everything. I was told it would look good on scholarships and the teachers in charge of the clubs were always
pestering kids about joining theirs. My passions in high school were sports and FFA. I missed going to National Conventions,
Winter Leadership Conferences, and Judging Contests because I had a football or basketball game that I deemed more
important at the time. Looking back on it now, I’m not playing either sport at the collegiate level, however I see people I met
in FFA every day walking around campus and am still using the skills I learned by competing in contests and attending
conferences. I’m not saying that football didn’t teach me a lot of things about myself and how to work as a team, because it
certainly did. What I am trying to say is what every adult tried to tell me before I missed an FFA function for a football or
basketball game. The friends you make through FFA are going to be people you know for the rest of your life. We’re all
passionate about agriculture in some way and as we get older, the people you see seated around you are the people we will be
working with everyday.
You might all think that I must have been very involved in FFA, otherwise how would I be standing up in front of you
all right now? The truth is, I could have been much more involved than I was. I only ever competed in five contests
throughout my years. I was one of the kids who always hung out with the people from my chapter instead of making a bunch
of new friends. That’s not to say that some of my favorite memories don’t come from FFA, because they definitely do. I had a
blast traveling with my chapter and advisor, competing in my favorite contests, and seeing different parts of the state and
country. This blue jacket has taken me places I never could have seen without it. But think of how much more I could have
done, how many more places I could have gone if I would have chosen to be just a little more involved!
So North Dakota FFA, I’m challenging you to get more involved and meet new people. Find your niche in the FFA,
take off with it and don’t look back. North Dakota FFA, it’s time to grab the bull by the horns and Go All Out!

“It’s Time to Pick Your Seat”
States Reporter Sam Lies
For the longest time, whenever I walked into a room I always tried to sit in the back. I didn’t want to sit up front
because then I would have to participate in what was going on and I might end up having to talk in front of the group or be
asked to answer questions. This was terrifying for me but my biggest fear was having to share my thoughts and opinions.
What if they didn’t agree with me? What if they would get mad because we have different views, different ideas. So for me,
that seat in the back was definitely my safe place to go unseen and unheard.
However, it didn’t take me long sitting in that back seat for me to realize that I needed to be brave…not just for me
but for those around me that might have similar thoughts and ideas that they are afraid to share. If you haven’t noticed, most
of the seats in the back of any room fill up way before the front ones. This shows us that more people are comfortable sitting
in the back being unseen and unheard, but how does this help us progress and achieve. I watch person after person sit in those
front seats, stand up and speak their mind. Whether they were in favor of something or against it… or were standing up for
someone or an idea….they were speaking up, and making sure that their thoughts and opinions were heard. They didn’t care
if somebody else had different opinions or didn’t agree with what they said, they put aside their fears, and it was then that they
truly became leaders. If you look at the seats in the front of this convention hall who usually sits in them? Our delegates.
The delegates are representing every chapter in the state and are asked to share their ideas and opinions to help make this the
greatest student organization in the country. If we didn’t have members like them, sitting in the front seats, how would this
organization ever move forward? Think about the huge decisions they have made in our past. If it wasn’t for them, it would
still be an all-boys organization and I think everyone would agree, us girls make this organization look good.
Throughout this last year I’ve got to see some pretty great North Dakota FFA members sit in the front seats, and be
brave. The FFA Creed is a staple of our organization that states what the FFA stands for and believes in. Every freshman has
the opportunity to learn the creed and Kelsey Perdue of the Ray FFA Chapter didn’t stop there. She found a passion for the
words she spoke and took pride in them enough to put in countless hours and a tremendous amount of effort. She was brave
enough to stand on stage and recite the creed as the 2014 North Dakota State Creed Winner and was even braver to stand at
the National FFA Convention as a final four creed contestant and speak what the creed means to her. Kelsey chose her seat in
the front, so that she could speak up and share the powerful words of the FFA creed! I think we all should follow Kelsey’s
example.
This spring as our state legislature was in session, I had the opportunity to witness some leaders of the Beulah FFA
Chapter stand before the Senate and testify on the State Fair Appropriations Bill. These FFA members knew how important it
was for the state to fund youth programs at the North Dakota State Fair. They didn’t testify for only themselves but for every
4H and FFA member that exhibits a project at the State Fair. They truly showed what great leaders they are by standing in
front of such a powerful group, to show their passion for FFA! These members decided to take a seat in the front and share
their thoughts and opinions no matter what others thought.
This world needs better leaders. We need people to sit in the front and strive for change. Too many of us get
comfortable letting others lead and steer us in their direction. In this, FFA Organization we strive to influence and educate
people, and it takes a brave person to do that. By you deciding to take that front seat, and be brave enough to speak up, you
might just influence someone else to do the exact same! FFA members it is up to you if you want to stay in the back or will
you take a seat in the front. Can you be brave and share your thoughts, ideas and talents with everyone? FFA Members, no
one else can decide it for you, only you can pick YOUR seat!

“Creating Your Masterpiece”
Keylee Odden, State Sentinal
I have something to tell you all, and I’m warning you now that what I am about to say will probably surprise you. But guess
what?! Every single person here is an artist. Yes, YOU ARE AN ARTIST. Now, I know, not all of you can draw, or sing, or
write poetry, but each of you are working on a very important masterpiece. That masterpiece, is your life. When we were
born, each of us were given a blank slate. We had the ability to do whatever we wanted to do, and be whoever we wanted to
be. Over the years, that blank slate changes as we all go through different experiences in our life. There may be cuts and tears
in our masterpiece from the bad times, or huge bursts of color from the happy times, but no matter what, each of our
masterpieces will be different and unique.
When we were young, we had some pretty big dreams and aspirations. Personally, I always thought I would be a
movie star or maybe even the president of the United States, but since that hasn’t worked out I had to change my plan a little
bit. But the great thing about that blank slate we were given to put our masterpiece on is that we can make mistakes. We can
erase them or cover them up. It’s our masterpiece, and no one can tell us what we should do with it. It can be so easy to get
caught up in the craziness of life. And sometimes, it’s even easier to lose yourself and who you are somewhere along the way.
We only get one life to live, and if we spend it trying to please others and be the version of ourselves that everyone else wants,
then I don’t think that we are truly living. No one knows you better than you know yourself, and no one could create your
masterpiece quite like you can.
Looking back there are a lot of great moments that I would definitely include on my masterpiece. Those days that you
just consider THE BEST. That amazing birthday party you had when you were younger, the good times you had with friends
throughout junior high and high school, graduating with some of the best people you will ever meet, times like that are the
happy bursts of color I was talking about. But there are also the harder times, the ones of disappointment, and times when you
feel like you let yourself down, those are the tears and imperfections that can appear on your masterpiece. Even though it’s
sometimes hard to think about, those experiences are very important too. Mainly because experiences like that, make you into
the person you are today. They teach you how to better yourself and your life, so that you won’t have to have those same
feelings again. The good mixed in with the bad, that’s what makes us who we are.
I want all of you to think back on your life, how many people have you met that were exactly like you? My guess, is
none. Yeah, you may have had a lot in common with some of your friends or even strangers but finding someone who is just
like you is literally impossible. You are your very own unique person, with a unique mix of goods and bads that have created
a masterpiece. And there is no one who could ever replace who you are or the mark you’re leaving on this world.
So many people think the end game in life is finding yourself. I don’t think it’s that way at all. Life should be about
creating yourself. It’s about going out there, experiencing everything that you can, making mistakes, and learning from them.
It’s about finding what it is that makes you happy and who it is that makes you happy. It may be finding a career or making
new friendships, but never forgetting all of the old ones that brought you to where you are today. There is no set life that you
need to live, this life really is what you make of it. And I hope none of you ever let anyone tell you otherwise. You only get
one life to live make sure it is the one you want. FFA members, I challenge you not to waste your time trying to find yourself,
go out there and create yourself, CREATE YOUR MASTERPIECE!

“Serving with Purpose”
State Parliamentarian – Daniel Pretzer
It is amazing to me to see all these FFA members here at once and representing ND FFA and Agriculture. Everybody here is
representing a chapter and the chapter you’re representing is mostly likely the town you go to school. Because of that school,
you got the opportunity to be exposed to the FFA. Everyone here in the Benson Bunker Fieldhouse right now is here because
somebody influenced them to be part of the FFA and encouraged them to come to state convention. This person can be
anybody from your parents, your siblings, your FFA advisor, or maybe it was one of your friends. Either way, these people
know what the FFA is about and know the importance of Agriculture in today’s modern society and want you to take full
advantage of all the opportunities it gives you.
I was fortunate enough to be raised in a small community like the good ol town of Scranton, North Dakota. My 13
years living in Scranton taught me a lot of how much a community can help and influence a person. Because of Scranton, I
learned about the FFA. Through motivation from my good friend, Dalton, and my Ag Teacher, Mrs. Steeke, I quickly got
involved and learned about agriculture and all the opportunities it has to offer. I learned that small communities, like Scranton,
are driven by agriculture. Ag is a huge reason for the existence of most small towns around North Dakota.
During my time in Scranton, I also learned about the importance of helping your community. That community has
taught and inspired you to go a certain direction. The community will back you up because they want to see you succeed. That
was the nice part of living in a smaller place because everybody in Scranton knows me, knows my classmates, and knows
everyone in the community. We are like one big family and family will never forget who you are.
No one to my knowledge has ever quoted me, but if somebody did I want it to be this, No matter where I go in life, I
will always have a place in my heart for Scranton, North Dakota. I hope that everyone here has this same feeling when you
think about your home town. If you get that feeling, that means that community you were involved with influenced, helped, or
inspirited you. Many of you won’t even realize the importance of your community until you move away.
Living to serve is a large concept in the FFA. If your community has supported you, then give it your support in
return. On your way home from convention, think about how much your community means to you. Volunteer your time to
help whoever or whatever it is. Maybe it’s your FFA chapter, maybe it’s your church, or spending time at the senior citizen
center. It could be something as simple as picking up garbage in the local park. Become an active member of your community
and use the leadership skills the FFA has provided you. When doing this, do your best to help and show passion for your
cause. Someone is going to see your work and be influenced by you to get involved. Because you’re not doing this for
yourself, you’re doing this for your community. Don’t do this because of a paycheck, do this because you love it and you want
to Serve with Purpose.
