Careers in Agribusiness Systems typically focus on utilizing innovative technology in order
to increase profitability and efficiency. Agribusiness is the coordination of all
activities that contribute to the production, processing, marketing, distribution, financing and development of agricultural commodities and resources. This includes food, fiber, wood products, natural resources, horticulture, and other plant and animal products and services.
Agribusiness is a high-tech industry that uses satellite systems, computer databases and spreadsheets, biotechnology, and many other innovations to increase efficiency and profitability.
Individuals choosing this pathway may serve as coordinators who oversee and contribute to the production, processing, distribution, marketing, financing, and development of agricultural merchandise and resources. These resources might include food, fiber, wood

has the opportunity to grow up on a farm or ranch. Many receive their agricultural work experience from on-the-job training and college courses in agriculture. Both will prove valuable to those preparing for a career in agribusiness.
Other career preparation may include college degrees, technical school certificates or business school.
prepAre nOwExperience in and knowledge of the business
world is key to a career in this pathway. FFA marketing plan, farm business management, agricultural issues and agricultural communications career development events are among the many ways you can learn more about the field of agribusiness and interact with industry professionals.
High school business courses, including computer science, desktop publishing and typing class, will also prove beneficial in the long term, as will an advanced knowledge of computers and software programs.

if you’re an animal lover, you may find your niche in an Animal Systems career. Some who choose this career pathway work
directly with animals – they train, feed, water, exercise, bathe and groom their furry friends, as well as maintain and clean their cages.
Professionals in this field may inspect and grade livestock food products, purchase livestock, or work in technical sales and marketing.
Some people in the animal systems career path work to develop better, more efficient ways of producing and processing meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products. Others advise agriculture producers on how to upgrade animal housing facilities properly, lower mortality rates, handle waste matter or increase production of animal products, such as milk or eggs.
In addition, careers for hunters and trappers are available, which involve setting bait and traps, tracking animals and obtaining them through various methods.

Systems careers are increasing. Demand for food and fiber will continue to increase because of the growth in world population and demand for U.S. agricultural exports.

10 years. The opportunities for veterinarians and veterinary technicians are expected to continue to increase in the coming years, which make it a valuable career choice.

and technicians depend on their specialty and on the type of work they perform. A technical degree in animal science is sufficient for some positions that assist animal scientists in conducting applied research or basic research, but a master’s or doctoral degree is required to supervise and conduct basic research.
prepAre nOw High school agricultural education and
biology courses will help you gain basic animal knowledge, and often, these courses will spark an interest in this industry. Other valuable experience can be gained through working at a veterinary clinic, equine stable, livestock farm, or by raising your own pets.

Calling all science whiz-kids! A career in Biotechnology Systems may have been under your microscope all along.
This career pathway is becoming increasingly important in the field of agriculture, and the job opportunities are expanding every day. One popular field within Biotechnology Systems involves genetically engineering plants to enhance them in a variety of ways. For example, it is possible to make plants more nutritious, larger and more resistant to extreme weather.
Individuals choosing this pathway may also work to alter the amount of chemicals necessary for successful crop production. The renewable fuels industry also contributes to the field of biotechnology, as the United States seeks methods of creating fuel from agricultural byproducts and crops including switchgrass, canola, corn and soybeans.
industry OutLOOkBiotechnology careers are becoming
increasingly important in the field of agriculture as technology continues to advance and new products and crops are demanded by consumers.
As farmers try to grow more food with fewer resources and the public concern over food safety increases, biologists are exploring new avenues of research in biotechnology to develop plants and food crops that require less fertilizer, few pesticides and herbicides, and less water for growth.

On-the-job training and basic certifications are also required for these positions.

Knowledge is power, and having a basic working knowledge of this field will help you determine your best fit. An environmental technician or engineer may focus on hazardous-waste management by evaluating and analyzing hazardous materials while also creating regulations in order to prevent accidents or dangerous situations. Others in this career path may work with city governments to maintain and improve water and air quality for local residents.

ways waste, pollution, recycling and conservation impact the environment.
Jobs in Environmental Service Systems are likely to increase in number as public health
concerns continue to rise. A shift in emphasis toward preventing problems rather than controlling those that already exist will also spur demand for these positions. More careers focused on preventing environmental issues are predicted to develop in the future, as more people begin to pay closer attention to their impacts on the environment.

eduCAtiOn requireMents A lot of college programs can help prepare
you for careers in this field. But some professions on this pathway require additional training and licensing.
Federal regulations require a license to work as a hazardous material removal worker. Most employers provide technical training on the job, but in most cases a formal 32- to 40-hour training program must be completed to be licensed as an asbestos- and lead-abatement worker or a treatment worker.
prepAre nOwBecause many of these careers can be found
in your own community, seek out current job professionals and ask to job-shadow them. That’s a great way to see if this pathway is right for you. You can also conduct your own water-quality research experiments, start a recycling program at your school or study the environment around you.

Individuals working in Food Products and Processing may uncover new food sources, study and evaluate food content, and generate ways to satisfy industry and government regulations when processing, preserving, packaging and storing food.
They also create new food products and
inspect food-processing areas to make sure that all necessary standards are met including sanitation, safety, quality and waste management.
The food science industry incorporates food chemistry, food microbiology, food safety, nutrition, food processing and food technologies in its careers. But this doesn’t mean everyone is going to work in a lab.
Communication skills and knowledge of basic business principles is also important. Some

scientists/technologists take courses such as food chemistry, food analysis, food microbiology and food processing operations. Many jobs require more advanced degrees with research experience.
Agricultural and food scientists/technologists should be able to work independently or as part of a team and be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both in speaking and writing. Most agricultural scientists also need an understanding of basic business principles.
prepAre nOwTo pursue a career in Food Products and
Processing, a solid education in science is key. Take multiple science courses during middle and high school, which will create a good base of knowledge when entering college. Agriscience can also help you prepare for a food science career, through research projects and classroom instruction. if spending time outdoors interacting with nature is a favorite pastime for you, a career in Natural Resource Systems
could be a good fit. These careers may involve working to develop, maintain and manage forests and natural environments, as well as acquiring various types of marine life for human utilization, animal feed, bait and other purposes.
Individuals choosing to work as conservation scientists or foresters may manage, develop, use, and help protect forests and rangelands.
Careers as conservation scientists and foresters are available all over the United States and may include managing, developing and helping to protect the country’s range lands and 737 million acres of forests.
Nearly two-thirds of conservation scientists and foresters are employed by federal, state, or local governments – many by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Private sector jobs can be within consulting firms or scientific research groups. Employment of foresters is concentrated in the western and southern states, where many national and private forests and parks, and most of the lumber and pulpwood-producing forests are located. But working in this pathway doesn’t mean you can’t live in a city. Some find careers protecting wildlife that seek refuge in cities or maintaining urban parks and green areas.

is the minimum education recommended for a professional career in forestry. In the federal government, a combination of experience and appropriate education occasionally may substitute for a four-year degree in natural resources, but job competition makes this difficult. Other careers in this pathway may require a bachelor’s or master’s degree in natural resource management, wildlife management or a related field. Technicians in all areas of Natural Resource Systems will require on-the-job training.
prepAre nOw Many industry professionals point to their
lifelong interest in the outdoors as a primary career motivator. Many FFA supervised agricultural experience programs, including wildlife management and outdoor recreation, will help you begin to learn the industry. The forestry career development event will help you learn basic tree knowledge, industry terminology and skills that foresters will need. General outdoor hobbies can also teach you a great deal about this career field. Hunting, fishing, maintaining wildlife habitat, and spending time with other outdoor enthusiasts will add to your knowledge base.

and technicians depend on their specialty and on the type of work they perform. A technical degree in plant science is sufficient for some jobs in assisting scientists to perform applied research or basic research, but a master’s or doctoral degree is required to supervise and conduct basic research.
A typical undergraduate agricultural science curriculum includes communications, economics, business, and physical and life sciences courses. Those preparing to work as a crop or soil scientist take courses in plant pathology, soil chemistry, entomology, plant physiology and biochemistry, among others.
prepAre nOw High school students can prepare themselves
for college by taking multiple science courses, especially biology and chemistry. Having a basic knowledge of physical and life sciences will aid in the more difficult science courses in college.
Land evaluation, plant identification and other related FFA career development events will help you determine if this pathway is the right fit for you. Some members also find it useful to incorporate this field into their supervised agricultural experience programs. Related SAEs include placement on a row-crop farm or agricultural research facility, working at a greenhouse or nursery, growing vegetables in a backyard garden, or helping manage the turf at a golf course, park or other sports facility.

individuals entering the Power, Structural and Technical Systems career pathway usually enjoy working with equipment
and all things technical. Career professionals in this field apply knowledge of engineering, hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, power, structures and controls to the field of agriculture. They design agricultural structures as well as machinery and equipment. They develop ways to conserve soil and water and improve the processing of agricultural products.
industry OutLOOkEmployment of individuals in the Power,
Structural and Technical Systems pathway is expected to grow about the same as the average for all occupations through 2012. However, opportunities for agricultural engineers are expected to increase. Increasing demand for agricultural products, continued efforts for more efficient agricultural production and increasing emphasis on the conserving of resources should result in good job opportunities in the coming years.

eduCAtiOn requireMents This field has a wide range of educational
opportunities, which makes it especially appealing to many students. Degrees for some of the more scientific-based careers range from an associate degree to a Ph.D. Other jobs require technical school training, resulting in certifications like certified welding machine operator or certified machinist. For some positions, initial and continuing on-the-job training is provided. Apprenticeship programs are also popular within these careers, which give an opportunity for on-the-job training but under the watchful eye of a longtime, certified professional.
prepAre nOwHigh school career and technical education
courses have proven to help many students determine if this pathway is their chosen career. Many career professionals credit their high school agricultural education or shop classes as the start to their Power, Structural and Technical Systems career. Enroll in these courses to gain hands-on experience and knowledge of the industry. The FFA agricultural mechanics career development event can also provide hands-on experience. Other career preparation experience can come through job shadowing current career professionals, or by pursuing an FFA supervised agricultural experience program that may include working for an auto mechanic, construction company, farmer or engineering company.
