Family Photos and Catch Up Day

From the Principal........

Dear Parents & Friends,

I don’t know about you, but we are just beginning to enter my favourite time of the year. We are over the dark, cold parts of winter and spring is in the air. The sun seems to be teasing us with warmer days, the trees are beginning to blossom and there is a fresh, beautiful smell of the sea air. It is a beautiful time of the year. It has also been a fantastic time to be a part of the Star of the Sea community over the last week or so. Have we been busy or what? Activity-a-thon Day Last Friday saw us celebrate the bi-annual A-thon, a major fundraiser for the P&F and the school. We took a gamble with the weather and what started as a drizzly morning soon turned into glorious sunshine and a fantastic day. All the a-thons were great events and the children are to be commended for their engagement and sense of spirit as they participated with joy and enthusiasm in the construct-a-thon, safari-a-thon, great race-a-thon and the boot camp-a-thon. I extend my thanks to the staff and the many parent volunteers who helped to supervise the groups of children. What impressed me even more was how at the end of the day parents helped pitch in with the packing up and clean-up of equipment and classrooms. I also offer my appreciation to Amanda Ford and another group of very dedicated parents who efficiently ensured the sausage sizzle was cooked and the children were all fed and watered on time. Now that the a-thon is over it is now time for the children to bring in their sponsorship forms together with the pledged amounts of money. Thank you to those families who have already returned their forms. The Class Parent Reps will be counting money as it comes in and they are eager to finalise the tally so a total can be announced. A raffle ticket will be allocated to each child for every $10 they raise and will go into the draw for Principal and Deputy Principal for a day. There will also be gift voucher prizes to be won as well. The draw will take place at the final assembly in Week 10. A reminder that the money raised will directly benefit the children with new stoves and ovens for cooking, a mathematics stair case to make mathematics visible and we hope we will have enough to purchase benches, seats, umbrellas and create a nature play area for the children to enjoy. Thanks for a great day and to everyone who played a role in making this year's a-thon so successful and enjoyable.

Book Week Parade Matt Perry and I are learning very quickly that we don't do things in half measures at Star of the Sea. When we're in, we're all in! After a busy A-thon Day on Friday we backed up again with a most successful Book Week Parade and Assembly. The children again entered into the spirit of the occasion and there were many amazing costumes. The creativity of our parents is absolutely astounding with children dressed as light bulbs, Mine Craft characters and characters from shortlisted books. Thank you for your support and encouragement of the children and the school. Thank you to Mrs Kolaczkos, Mrs Ferragamo, Mrs Kluzek and Mrs Gariboli for coordinating and planning Book Week. Please call into the Library to have a look at the lanterns the children have made, reflecting this year's theme 'Books Light Up Our World.' I also extend our congratulations to the winners of this year's Ken Kelsey Award. Lina Ciampa (Year 5) and Leah Seager (Year 7) were both impressive winners with their very creative and well-constructed narratives. Congratulations to all students who submitted entries, we encourage you to keep writing and striving for quality. Please enter again next year. Leah Seager (Year 7) and Lina Ciampa

(Year 5) receive the Ken Kelsey award.

School Satisfaction Survey

Thank you for your response to the Parent Opinion Survey. The survey is now closed and I am very appreciative that 135 families responded and took time to provide feedback about various aspects of the school. The survey will now be collated and the School Board will discuss the views and opinions offered. A summary of the survey will be published in the newsletter so you can see and get a feel for what has been said. Like many surveys where opinions are sought there were polar comments and views. I have managed to have a quick read of the raw uncollated data and at first glance the results are quite positive and affirming. Café Conversation Evening #2 A reminder, that parents will have the opportunity to attend the second session of school consultation. If you attended last year's Café Night please come along and see the fruits of your input. If you haven't attended before then please come along and join in the conversation about how we can make Star of the Sea a great school. Please keep Wednesday 9th September clear in your diary. Café Conversation #2 will be held in the Marine Discovery Centre at 7pm. For catering purposes please rsvp [email protected] Dad's Breakfast There are many traditions and events at Star of the Sea and the Dad's Breakfast is one event not be missed. Next Friday 4th September all Dads and significant males in the lives of our children are invited to join us for breakfast on the school oval. Breakfast is served at 8am. The children can play on the oval and the dads can meet other dads. When the school bell goes at 8.40am we invite the dads to take the children to their classrooms, settle them in and then head off to work. It might be helpful to know where your child's classroom is before Friday. Please be aware this is not a breakfast for Mums or kids; Dads Only! Please make sure the children have a good breakfast. The purpose of this day is to honour the special place of Dads and significant males in the family, spoil our Dads, provide a chance for Dads to network and allow the Dads a chance to take the children to class in the morning. For catering purposes please let us know if you will be attending. We look forward to seeing you next Friday. Principal's Review In keeping with the policy for Diocesan school leaders in Catholic Education SA, I am required to conduct an appraisal of my leadership. This is conducted as newly appointed Principals come to the end of two years as principals in their new schools. The two years have passed very quickly and I will complete my tenure at the end of this year. As part of my review, staff, students and parents will have an opportunity to provide feedback on my work at Star of the Sea. In the coming weeks, Ms Maria Canala my Principal Consultant will be inviting you to complete a quick online survey or she may contact you for an interview. A letter from Maria, with a link to the survey, will be emailed to parents. I know you have been inundated with surveys of late but I hope you will find the time to complete my review as I would welcome all feedback. Please enjoy the weekend ahead. Joe De Tullio Principal

From the Deputy Principal….

Hello Friends Last week I wrote about our upcoming weeks containing such fabulous school events – the A-thon Day and the Book Week Parade. Neither of these days disappointed. I must admit I woke up in the morning of the At-hon and thought “I wonder how this is going to go?” The weather though turned out to be absolutely faultless. There were clear blue skies for most of the day and the weather (by its own comparison of late) was quite warm. The students applied themselves willingly to all of the activities. From the Construct-a-thon in Reception and Year 1, to the Safari-a-thon, in Year 2 & 3, to the Great Race-a-thon in Year 4 & 5, to the Bootcamp-a-thon in the Years 6/7. A special thanks to all of the parents and friends who donated their time and expertise in making the day a fantastic one. I can’t wait to see who is Principal and Deputy Principal for a day when the Raffle is drawn. Yesterday we celebrated the 2015 Book Week Parade. The amount of time and effort that families put into their costumes was brilliant. The students eagerly engaged in the spirit of the parade on the day and paraded proudly. Thanks to Helen Kolaczkos for coordinating the parade and to our parents for supporting our students.

Foord Avenue Foord Avenue is the small road that runs adjacent to the church off Marlborough St. Can I ask that parents and friends remember that students and families are often walking along the pavement on Marlborough St where Foord Ave intersects Marlborough St. Another important point to remember is that traffic flows much better before and after school if motorists enter Foord Avenue from Marlborough St and exit the church car park from Seaview Rd. I ask that pedestrians exercise caution in Foord Avenue as well.

Military Road Drop Before School It has become apparent that some parents are parking in the ‘drop off zone’ on Military Rd in the mornings. Can I please remind people that this area is designed for motorists to drive to the front of the line before allowing children to alight from vehicles. Please do not drop students south of the driveway near the courts. Traffic needs to continue to flow in this area to avoid the blocking of through traffic on Military Rd.

School Hats I ask you to read the following information carefully…. Cancer Council SA recommends skin is protected when the UV radiation level is 3 and above, as it is strong enough at this level to damage unprotected skin. As such, hats will need to be worn at school from 1 September – 30 April or when UV levels are 3 and above every day in South Australia. Teachers will remind students about this also. Please ensure your child has a hat for school.

Fr Richard Loenard Fr Richard was one of the other presenters from the SACPPA conference that Joe and myself attended two weeks ago. Based at North Sydney, Fr Richard Leonard SJdirects the Australian Catholic Office for Film &Broadcasting. Richard lectures in cinema and theology at the United Faculty of Theology and has been a visiting lecturer in Australian cinema at the University of Melbourne. In 2003 he was a visiting scholar within the School of Theatre, Film & Television at UCLA. He is a visiting professor at the Gregorian University in Rome and an honorary fellow of the Australian Catholic University. of Peter Weir (Melbourne University Press) Fr Richard presented some powerful words to us in regards to ‘Where is God in my life’? What are my prayers to God really about? He powerfully reminded us that God is not vengeful, does not send negative things to us and does not give us ‘crosses to bare’. More information and insights to his presentation can be found at: http://www.uscatholic.org/articles/201302/what%E2%80%99s-god-got-do-it-26954

Gospel Reflection: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

Now when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gath-ered around Jesus, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus ob-serving the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?" He said to them, "Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,

'This people honors me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me;

in vain do they worship me,

teaching human precepts as doctrines.'

You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition."

Then he called the crowd again and said to them, "Listen to me, all of you, and under-stand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile. For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person."

RE NEWS BOOK WEEK: ‘BOOKS LIGHT UP THE WORLD’ ….. From a religious perspective? This year’s Book Week theme got me thinking about a few things. Firstly, I checked my prediction that the Bible is probably the most read book of all time. Although it is difficult to obtain exact figures, there is little doubt that it would be one of the most widely distributed books. The Guinness Book of Records estimates that around 5 billion copies have been sold world-wide. Are you wondering what else tops the most top ten read books in the world? Included in the list is Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung, no surprise with population figures of China, the classic Gone With the Wind, the moving Diary of Anne Frank and more contemporary titles such as The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. However it was the ‘light’ component of this year’s theme that caught my attention. There are numerous references in scripture connected to light. My favourites include: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14) “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light of the Lord. Walk as children of light.” (Ephesians 5:8) Your word is a lamp to me feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 11:105) Clearly without physical light, life on Earth would be a very different place and not function as we know it. This could also be the same for us with no spiritual light, perhaps our lives would be altered and the way we see the world may be affected. In our Catholic tradition, we often make reference to ‘walking in the light’. In the Second (New) Testament, walking in the light is directly related to Jesus as it was he who said “I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness…. (John 8:12) So for us, it suggests that we can live in the light God provides and Jesus modelled. We can follow in His footsteps, tread lightly but purposefully, with grace and love in our hearts. As we do, we mature in faith and follow the light Jesus shone for us. Walking in the light can be our daily triumph or our daily struggle but with Jesus in our hearts, it is possible for our inner light to always shine. “There are two ways of spreading light; to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it” (Edith Wharton) SACRAMENTAL RETREAT Tomorrow our Confirmation and First Communion candidates will be participating in a one day retreat. We will have around 70 participants and we look forward to a wonderful day of connection and shared learning. Thank you to the staff who are supporting the day. I look forward to sharing images and thoughts about the experience in next week’s newsletter.

PE AND SPORT NEWS

SOCCER U12 SOS again faced Mt Carmel last week, after losing 2/8 in a match earlier in the season and after Mt Carmel recently won the Knock Out Cup 5/1. Our best three players were first half goalie Eddie O’Halloran (who put his body on the line to save several goals), second half goalie Joel Dunlop (who also made several saves) and Liam Carey (who played his strongest defensive game of the year to continually block Mt Carmel’s attacking strikers). Aidan Deptula scored our only goal, with SOS losing 1/6. Overall, a ‘good’ loss against the Knock Out Cup Champions and the current leader of the League Cup competition. Dear Parents/Caregivers, We have approached Week 6 of Term 3 already, and have been extremely busy with our program planning. Last week students got to explore & investigate science experiments and this week to coincide with “Book Week” students will be engaging in more fun activities.

Bookings & Cancellations Bookings and cancellations are important!! As we MUST adhere to the strict child: adult ratios. There are some parents who are still failing to notify staff of cancellations and bookings. This does impose a safety risk and can cause confusion for staff and children if notification is not given. If your child will not be attending OSHC on the days booked please notify us ASAP to avoid being charged for the session. We understand that last minute changes can occur but cancellations must be advised by 12.00pm to avoid being charged. Cancellations for mornings must be done the night before by text to 0404 174 076. If your child will be attending after school sport please note that all students must sign in to OSHC before proceeding to their After School Sport Activity. A release form is also to be completed and signed by parents. Please collect one from me if you have not already done so. This ensures the safety and wellbeing of your child. September / October 2015 Vacation Care Yes can you believe it’s this time again! The program for the September/October holidays is now completed and available for you to access. If your child/ren will be attending these upcoming holidays it would be advised to act quickly as we only have limited spaces available each day and we have already had a high demand from other schools in our community for bookings. Please also note if your child/ren attends OSHC throughout the term, bookings for Vacation Care will not be accepted unless all OSHC accounts are paid in full. Bookings and cancellations for excursion and incursion days are to be made by Friday 18th September 2015. A full charge of $50 will apply if cancelled after the specified date (Please read the confirmation form to familiarise yourself with the policy on bookings and cancellations) A registration form and excursion permission form is available from the front office to complete and must be handed in prior to attending Vacation Care. You can also obtain one from the OSHC centre located in the Multi-Purpose room or alternatively download one from the school website. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to come and speak with me at any time. Thank you for your continuing support. Kind regards Laura Artis
