Parent wants answers>> Hospital apologises for child’s injury
MAKHOSANDILE ZULU
THE father of his injured child,Thobani Shongwe, is unhappyabout the outcome of a meet-
ing to discuss an injury inflictedon his son when he was admitted toStanger Hospital in 2010.
Sipho Mbambo laid a complaintafter Thobani sustained an injury onhis forehead in hospitalwhenhewas20 months old.
Health ombudsman from thePietermaritzburg office BhekiswayoMboneni said in an email response:“ThemeetingwithMrSiphoMbamboand the hospital was called bymy of-fice in order for him to get thehospital’sexplanationconcerninghiscomplaint.”
According to Mbambo the toddlerhad no injuries prior to his admit-tance.
He says the nurses told himthat the boy was injured becausethey had inserted a drip in his head.
However, Mboneni said thathospital records indicate that nursesdidnotactnegligently.
“Hospital reportsrecorded that his sondeveloped an ulcer onthe forehead follow-ing a drip infiltration.Detailsofthedripinfil-tration were ex-plained to him.
“Therewasnoneg-ligence on the part ofthe hospital.”
Mboneni said thatMbambo’s son is still receiving treat-mentatthehospitaland thefatherap-pears to appreciate this.
According to Mbambo, ever sincehissonwasinjuredhehasbeentrying
to get compensation for him.Hesays thathehaswrittenseveral
letters to government officials askingfor help.
Mboneni said that such a demand
for compensation “does not exist inthe case of his son”.
“They only responded last monthandtookmysoninforapsychologicalcheck-up,”saying that this was done
to determine whether the 2010 inci-denthadaneffecton theboy’smentalstate.
“While we respect his right to en-gage anyone about his complaint,we
plead for honesty inappreciating whathas been done totreat his son’s ill-ness,” said the om-budsman.
Mboneni saidthatMbambo’s deci-sion to approach theWeekly with thismatter “is againstthespiritofthemeet-ing” saying that he,
as thehealth ombudsman, hadmadean effort to ensure thatMbambowaswell informed with regards to theallegations he had made when writ-ing to the premier.
“Today [10 April] they told me Ishould just accept the apologythat my son was injured while intheir care and that they hadacted negligently by not inform-ing me about the injury,” saidMbambo.
Mboneni confirmed that the hos-pital had admitted negligence on itspart.
“Thehospital didnotapologise fornot informing him about the cause ofthe ulcer and the failure by nurses toexplain its occurrence.”
According to Mboneni, the boy’sfather accepted the apology.
However, the father isnotsatisfiedwith this and wants compensationfor what the nurses did to hischild.
“Myboydoesnot act normal, evenwhenheisclimbingatreeandyoutellhim to get down he just throws him-self to the ground.
“His behaviour worries me and Ibelieve it was caused by the injury hesustained in 2010,” he said.
Thobani's father isunhappy with thescar on his child’sforehead and wantscompensation.

5Speaker celebratesFreedom Day in Groutville>> ‘All should enjoy equal rights and this includes foreign nationals’
MAKHOSANDILE ZULU
ANC chairperson and Speaker of theNational Assembly of South Africa,Baleka Mbete celebrated Freedom
Day with the ANC from the Greater KwaDukuza region at the Groutville sportsground on Sunday.
The event was titled ‘Celebrating 60years of the Freedom Charter’ and Mbete’sspeech focused on the 10 clauses of thisdocument which was adopted at theCongress of the People in Kliptownin 1955.
Mbete said that when the ANC came topower in 1994 it was the organisation’sresolution to ensure that the Constitutionof the country reflects the principles of theFreedom Charter.
She added that there is a plan to writethe Freedom Charter in all the official languages of South Africa.
She said that things such as racism andxenophobia, the economic marginalisation of the previously disadvantaged, corrupt police officials, to name a few, goagainst the principles of the FreedomCharter and that branches’ rank and fileshould play a role in ensuring that this document changes the lives of theconstituency.
“All shall enjoy equal rights,” she said, reading from the Freedom Charter, adding,“and this includes foreign nationals andthe ANC should ensure that this is thecase,” said Mbete.
Government has promised to create sixmillion jobs by 2019 through the Expanded
Public Works Programme and one millionjob opportunities through communitywork programmes, said Mbete, who saidthat government has said 90% of pupilsare to be trained and it is theduty of councillors to inform the peopleabout such programmes.
Addressing the organisation’s youthleague, Mbete said that the league shouldensure that the country’s youth are giventhe opportunity to learn as per theCharter’s clause which reads: “The doors ofeducation and learning shall be open.”
She said that the history books beingused in schools are still Eurocentric andshould be rewritten.
She stressed that mathematics andscience should be prioritised in previously disadvantaged schools so that the
country can produce more scientists fromthese areas who would be part of theSquare Kilometre Array project.
Mbetesaidthatgovernment isdoing allit can to ensure that there is housing forall, with 3.2 million houses builtsince 1994, and that informal settlementsare to be demolished as per the FreedomCharter.
She said that government is still in theprocess of rolling out the National HealthInsurance.
In closing, Mbete said that the FreedomCharterclearlystates“Thereshall bepeaceand friendship”, reiterating the “say no toxenophobia” message which came afterthe recent attacks on foreign nationals inparts of Durban, Pietermaritzburg andJohannesburg.
“People should stop thinking that theANC has forgotten the people and forgotten the Freedom Charter,” she said.

The site on which the Shri Durga Temple was built onwas donated to the Hindi residents of Stanger Manorby the Developers of the Stanger Manor Township,Shakot Investments (Pty) Ltd. The custody of thisproperty was left in the hands of the oldest Temple inStanger viz. Stanger Siva Temple in the early seventies, some 40 years ago. The Stanger Siva Temple, madeseveral attempts to build a temple on the given site, with the help of the Hindu residents.
Many meetings and discussions were held with theStanger Siva Temple society and finally the Temple sitewas handed over to the interim committee, StangerManor Hindu Temple Society. There were some setbacks initially, but these wereovercome. A steering
Committee was elected on Saturday, 22 November2008. Many members have joined the Temple Com-mittee since then. The Temple is now fully operational, but requires a Resident Priest. The post for a Priest hasbeen advertised.
This Temple caters for the whole Hindu Community ofStanger and its surrounding areas, observing all Hindufunctions and religious prayers on the Hindu calendar. This Temple is presently served by the following execu-tive committee members:-1) Mr Prem Maharaj2) Mr Som Mudaly3) Mr Vis Govender4) Mr Ram Makardood5) Mrs Mala Murugan6) Mr Allan Murugan7) Dr Malani Mudaly
