Safety Precautions

- The signal word WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if notavoided, could result in death or serious injury.

- The signal word CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if notavoided, may result in damage on machines. It may also be used to alert against unsafepractices.

- Read and understand all safety instructions with signal word such as WARNING andCAUTION. If safety instructions are ignored, personal injury may result.

- SDMC cannot anticipate every possible situation that might involve a potentialhazard. The instructions in this manual and warning labels on the machine are thereforenot all inclusive.

- All equipment shall be locked out or tagged out to protect against accidental or inad-vertent operation when such operation could cause injury to personnel. Do not attempt tooperate any switch, valve, or other energy isolating device where it is locked or tagged out.

Installation Precautions When selecting a site for the Bind-Fast 5, care should be taken to note the following points.

1. The installation site should be level. 2. The room where this machine is used should be provided with good

ventilation. 3. Free from any ambient vibration. 4. Away from direct exposure to sunlight. 5. Away from extremely high temperature and humidity.

Operating Precautions

1. Keep your fingers or hand away from melted adhesive. When machine is in ready mode the temperature of the adhesive reaches 340ºF.

2. Maintain proper adhesive level in melt tank. 3. To preserve the quality of the adhesive, keep the “Mode” switch in

“Standby” mode during periods of nonuse. 4. Do not remove any covers, disassemble or modify the Bind-Fast 5. 5. Keep small object away from machine, to prevent them from falling into

machine. Quality of finished product The most important thing for a good and strong binding is spine alignment of stock. To apply adhesive on spine equally, all sheets must touch the Jog Plate. Make sure stock to be bound gets jogged properly and is aligned against the clamp rod on the left side of the carriage. Thickness (weight) of cover stock is from 20# to 110#, up to 10pt cover stock (subject to grain direction and book thickness). After removing finished book from machine, let it sit for about 5 minutes before opening. Keep the clamper and nipper clean, free from adhesive and dust. Do not use any chemicals or solvents.

OPERATOR MAINTENANCE

ADHESIVE LEVEL To add pellets, send carriage to the left by depressing the “Bind” switch. Pour adhesive pellets into the tank area until the melted adhesive just covers the heating fins. Adhesive pellets should be added when the bottom left end of the tank is visible (the tank slopes down). Low adhesive levels may cause voids on the book’s spine as well as affecting the quality and strength of bind. DRAINING ADHESIVE Over time, adhesive can degrade and also become contaminated with dust, resulting in weak, low quality binds. This is often noticeable by the color of the adhesive. When this occurs, the tank should be drained and refilled with new adhesive. The Bind-Fast 5 must be hot in order to replace the adhesive. Use extreme care to avoid being burned. Press the “Bind” switch to move the carriage to the left. Lift the jog plate and unplug the heater. Unscrew the two baffle screws, as shown, and remove the baffle plate. Warning: Tank is HOT- Do not touch Place an aluminum tray under the drain plug on the side of the tank. Use a wrench to unscrew the drain plug, and let the adhesive drain into the tray. When the tank is empty (about 10 minutes), replace the drain plug, baffle and jog plate and pour new adhesive pellets into the tank until the adhesive level covers the heating fins. Press “Return” switch to send carriage to the home position.
