overspread the continent allotted by Providence [God] for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” – The basic American mentality up to

and just after the Civil War…

• 1800’s term to describe the long-standing belief that it was obvious God wanted the US to stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific

• Fueled westward expansion, which fueled desire to fulfill Manifest Destiny

Jefferson wanted to get trading rights along Mississippi to New Orleans

– Delegation was sent to France

• Slaves – Owners only took some slaves west – families were divided

• Jackson announces a formal policy of Indian removal

• Some (Seminoles, etc) fought to keep their land, but are defeated

• Others (Cherokee, etc.) tried to assimilate–Cherokee in GA became farmers–Soon, gold is found on their land

–The Cherokee appealed to the Supreme Court

–Jackson’s response: “Now let them enforce it!”

The Trail of Tears• The Cherokee were

“displaced” or kicked off their land.

• Moved from fertile GA to barren Oklahoma

• Eventually this was taken away as well
