From the Desk Of Fr. John The Christmas season continues for these several weeks and during that time we also celebrate different aspects of the Mystery of God made Man. This weekend we celebrate the oldest feast in honor of Mary… ‘Mary, the Holy Mother of God.’ (This also happens to be the beginning of the new year on our calendar – 2017.) January 1 happens to be the octave…or the eighth day…of the Christmas celebration…which focuses on Mary’s motherhood. It is through her that Jesus became incarnate…and we received the Savior of the world…as we pray in the Creed each Sunday… ‘and by the Holy Spirit was incar-nate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.’ Mary is the model and first disciple. She received the Good News…God’s Word…that she would be the Mother of the Savior…God’s only Son…and she responded with obedient and humble faith. The openness that she demon-strated is an example for us all to follow. She recognized and received the gifts that God was bestowing upon her. She responded in gratitude with a life of dedication, faith and love. It is and was for her ‘a way of life’ committed and real. We are all called to this ‘way of life’ of being a disciple…which translates into what we call ‘stewardship’…living faithfully the call of the Lord with all its blessings and responsibili-ties. Mary was a person of prayer…intimate relationship with God. Mary was a person ready to extend the love she experienced with others…remember the visitation to Elizabeth. Mary con-tinued to grow in her faith…through all the trials even to the cross and beyond. Mary generously served the Lord throughout her life using all of her talents and her life! Last weekend was the celebration of the Na-tivity of the Lord…which we call Christmas (that name comes from the older and traditional English way of designating different feasts with Mass…so… ‘Christ Mass’). The lessons of the Gospel led us through the mystery of the birth, the announce-

ment of the angel that the Savior was born in Bethlehem and the choir of angels singing the great hymn… ‘Glory to God in the Highest,’ and the visit of shepherds to the manger scene of the child wrapped in swaddling clothes. All of the Gospel lessons help us to see and understand what a marvel this mystery truly is for all the world…and all peoples of the world. God’s gift of love for us…which is repeated in another way in John’s Gospel. It is the ‘mystery’ to which we are to be open and receive…that we may become children of God…and deepen that relationship every day. A Wonderful Experience…was presented by the faculty, staff, and the students of SSPP in the week preparing for Christmas. It was a live presentation of the Journey to Bethlehem…with soldiers, shepherds, tax collectors, census takers, merchants, the three kings…and many choirs of angels. The upper classes prepared and presented the whole program as the younger students and parents and friends went from room to room and from floor to floor to see the sights. It all ended up in quiet prayer in church before the live scene of the birth of Christ…with angels and commentators telling us of the wonder of this great event. Congratula-tions and thank you all for the hard work and a solemn and fun way to prepare the way of the Lord! Thank You…to our Pastoral Care ministry…preparing and delivering more than 70 gift bags for the homebound and in other care facilities. I t was a beautiful way of showing our love at Christmas! Parish Gifts…for everyone still available…our annual Christmas Book…by Matthew Kelly. Look also for information about our new online service called FORMED! It is great! Capital Campaign Commitment Weekend…is coming…next weekend the Epiphany –Jan. 7-8!!!

Growing, Living, Building Together Campaign Prayer

Dear Lord, we know everything we have comes from you. You came to show us that life consists of giving. Open our hearts to recognize the need to enlarge our gathering space, to improve accessibility, and to upgrade our facilities so they may be more welcoming to parish-ioners and visitors. Teach us to be generous as you are generous. Show us the joys of giving. Inspire us to give sacrificially and cheerfully according to our means. Guide us as we are growing, living and building our spiritual home for everyone together. Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Rest

In Peace

Mary Childress

We express our condolences to

Dennis Asnes on the death of his father.

We hope you received and are enjoying the parish Christmas book gift—Resisting Happiness by Matthew Kelly.

More about the book…Are you happy? It may be the wrong question. Most of us think we are relatively happy, while at the same time knowing that we could be happier—maybe even a lot happier. Ordinary people

and the finest philosophers have been exploring the question of happiness for thousands of years, and theories abound. But this is not a book of theory. Resisting Happiness is a deeply personal, disarmingly transparent look at why we sabotage our own happiness and what to do about it. Are you over whelmed? Do you procrastinate? Do you some-times feel like you are your own worst enemy? Are you ignoring your dreams? Have you lost the courage to truly be yourself? Do you feel that your life lacks meaning and purpose? Do you find yourself avoiding the real issues in your life and focusing on the superficial? We all experience these feelings and doubts from time to time. But do you know what to do when you experience them? In this fascinating book, Matthew

Kelly, with his signature combi-nation of the profound and practical, helps us understand why we feel these things and how to rise above them. Breaking through resistance, Kelly tells us, is essential to becoming the best version of ourselves and living with passion ad purpose. What is resistance? It’s that sluggish feeling of not wanting to do something that you know is good for you. It’s the inclina-tion to do something that you unabashedly know is not good for you. It’s the desire and tendency to delay something you should be doing right now. It is resistance that stands between you and happiness. In these pages you will learn not only what it is, but how to recognize and conquer it in your own life.

Journey to Bethlehem...SSPP school student re-enacted the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem on Dec. 21. The Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students traveled as a family with Benjamin and Hannah. On the journey they encountered Roman soldiers, census takers, tax collectors, merchants in the marketplace, the three Wise Men in the desert and the shepherds in the field. Their journey ended in Church with the live Nativity scene. Various student groups served as choirs along the journey.

Pastoral Care Ministry Brightens the

Holidays

Members of the Pastoral Care Ministry brightened the holidays of our parishioners with visits and gift bags to the homebound and those in assisted living and nursing homes. Stewardship: A Way of Life - Service

Be sure and pick up the special Christmas Season bulletin provided by our bulletin production company. Celebrating the Christmas Season at Home features articles, ideas and action steps to keep Christ in Christmas. It also includes an Epiphany House Blessing.

Next week is Commitment Weekend, the culmination of our “Growng, Living, Building Together” campaign. We are asking all those who have not yet pledged to our campaign to make the gift commitment this weekend. Between now and Celebration Weekend, we will be calling on members who haven't

pledged to more fully explain our campaign effort, answer questions and invite your investment in our future. If you haven’t had an opportunity to let us know your gift intentions, and you’d like to save us a call or trip to your home, you can stop by the cafeteria after Mass (or Morris Hall if you can’t manage the steps) next weekend. Volunteers will be on hand to visit with you about our campaign, to answer your questions and/or accept your pledge decision. Please do your part to help make our campaign a success and do your very best in the way of a gift. The very future of our faith family depends on peoples’ response—on you and what you ultimately decide to do!

Commitment Weekend is Coming!
