ZIGGY’S WISDOM: Where would I be (am I) without daily prayer?

ZIGGY’S REFLECTION: To have an “authentic relation-ship” with God, prayer must be DAILY and sought after. Since it is communication, we must both “speak and listen” with our mind and heart. God wants to help us, but He must know that we’re interested!

From the Desk Of Fr. John Happy Easter! Today we celebrate Christ rising from the dead…His victory over sin and death. The Church’s greatest celebration of Christ’s victory is during the darkness of night at the Easter Vigil. Christ is the Light of the World, and with the blessing of the Easter Fire, and especially the Paschal Candle, which repre-sents the Risen Christ as the Light of the World and the fullness of God revealing Himself…we joyfully proclaim His victory and with great joy follow the Dead and Risen Christ. The Easter Vigil is the highpoint and the essence of our Christian faith. It is the day of our salvation and redemption. It is the anniversary of all of us being reborn in the dying and rising of Christ. The Church invites us all to gather and celebrate this wonderful mystery. This Sunday we renew our Baptismal Commit-ment after the 40 days of prayer, fasting and ex-traordinary generosity toward others. We have reflected on our own weakness and repented of our sinfulness. However, we also have come to know God’s goodness and great mercy offering us healing and forgiveness, restoring us to His friendship and life. Now that we have come to better understanding our faith and God’s love, we are eager to be more committed to following the Lord and more willing to renew our faith and the promises of our Baptism. Congratulations to those who have been re-born in the waters of rebirth in Baptism, strengthened through the gift of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation and fed with the most precious Body and Blood of the Lord at the table of the Eucharist. Congratulations and warm welcome to those who completed their initiation with the Easter Sacraments and those who were welcomed into full communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. May the Lord continue to enrich their lives and the life of our parish family. Easter brings us the Gospel of joy…the very account of Jesus’ resurrection. But we find that as the women came to the tomb they saw something they did not expect. They saw the empty tomb! They needed help to understand

this shocking experience. The Lord sent his an-gel/messenger to help interpret the event. “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for He has been raised just as he said…” We may need that very assistance as well. The whole mystery is not understood with our limited human understanding since we often think only with our physical point of view. This is a mystery that God is unfolding for us and inviting us to trust and believe. It is a pure gift out of His love for us. We might imagine the shock and surprise that the women must have felt and which over-whelmed them…but also the comfort and assur-ance the Angel gave them. With that, the Angel also gave them a mission… ‘Then go quickly and tell His disciples…He has been raised from the dead…’ We are called to witness to the world the marvel and wonder of our Christian faith in the resurrec-tion of Christ and its implication for all of human-kind. Just as the women and disciples were a bit uncertain as to what to do with the great news of Christ’s resurrection, we may hesitate to witness and share with others. We need to hear the words of the Angel… ‘Do not be afraid’…and… ‘Go quickly and tell…’ This is our faith…this is the faith of the Church…and we are proud to profess it! DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY…is celebrated on the Second Sunday of Easter…next weekend. St. John Paul II was deeply touched by the expe-rience of St. Faustina and the overwhelming mercy she encountered in Christ Jesus and wanted that gift of mercy to be celebrated by the whole Universal Church. Jesus showed that mercy to His disciples who had abandoned Him in His passion…but restored them in His infinite love and mercy while commissioning them to share it with the world. ABL Annual Dinner…Sunday April 23 at noon in SSPP Cafeteria. Please help support this im-portant Pro-Life annual event.

Attention Teenage and Adult Catholics

Are you or someone you know, a practicing Catholic who has not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation? If so, you are invited to talk with Father John, one of the Deacons or leave a message at the parish office (618-345-4343). You may also email Deacon Jimmy at [email protected] subject line CONFIRMATION. Receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism by a special outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We would be happy to discuss the pos-sibilities of your receiving Confirmation in the next few months.

Feast of Divine Mercy Celebration Sunday, April 23

The Feast of Mer-cy (Divine Mercy Sunday) is cele-brated on the first Sunday after Easter, April 23. What are the rea-sons for the insti-tution of this feast in the liturgical calendar of the Church? The Lord Jesus says: “Souls perish in spite of My bitter Passion. I am giving them the last hope of salva-tion; that is, the Feast of My Mercy. If they will not adore My mercy, they will perish for all eternity” (Diary 965). Re-course to the Divine Mercy is the last hope. However, in order to take ad-vantage of it, one should know that it exists, one should come to know God in the mystery of His mercy and turn with trust to Him. The institution of the separate feast helps one to come to know His mercy because it draws special attention to this attribute of God. Pamphlets about Divine Mercy Sun-day and Novena can be found at the church doors. The Divine Mercy Cen-acle meets every first and third Wednesday in Morris Hall at 1pm.

On April 2, parishioners, including the Youth Group, participated in a Spring yard clean-up at the home of Joyce Reyes who has been hospitalized for a long period. Keep Joyce in your prayers. And thanks to all the generous volun-teers!
