5th Floor Renovations Celebrated On June 9, Catskill Regional celebrated the completion of renovations to the 5 East Unit.

Thank you to our community and staff for celebrating with us!

The summer months are upon us and as the population increases in Sullivan County, so does the role of Catskill Regional Medical Center. Each year, thousands of people who live and vacation here depend on us to deliver quality care, skill and compassion. This summer, those visiting our area will see significant and positive changes from last year. From new services such as Stroke Care to physical renovations inside and out.

Recently, through the generosity of anonymous donor, our hospital received a gift of $500,000. This donation will help support our Capital Campaign that will fund continual renovations in many areas of the hospital. The renovations span from general cosmetic enhancements (such as new paint, floor

covering, ceilings and lighting) to heavy renovation and structural improvements. Over the coming years, our plans are to modernize all inpatient floors/units and convert 82% of the rooms to private rooms for added comfort, privacy and infection control. Recent renovations, new furniture, equipment and artwork have been well received by employees, physicians and the community.

I want to thank those who have already contributed to our Capital Campaign which will fund our enhancements and upgrades to our facilities. Our recent donor was a grateful patient and made the contribution thanking the hospitals’ doctors and nurses for the care and compassion received over the years. The donor wishes to remain anonymous. It’s gifts like these and the numerous thank you notes I receive from grateful patients that reaffirm the care we provide is very important to our community. Medical Group Helps Restore Livingston Manor Community Garden

Robert F. Malacoff, M.D., has joined the medical group practice as a Board-certified cardiologist and electrophysiologist, treating patients at both Catskill Regional Medical Group and Orange Regional Medical Group.

Dr. Malacoff has been providing cardiology care for more than 35 years. Most recently, he delivered care to patients at Lehigh Valley Heart Specialists in Allentown, PA. In 2012, Dr. Malacoff earned certification from the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners and also earned certification as a cardiac device specialist. In 2006, he was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with added qualification in clinical electrophysiology and is also certified in the sub-specialty boards in cardiovascular medicine.

Dr. Malacoff received his medical degree from Yale University and graduated from the Internal Medicine Residency program at Yale–New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT. His research fellowships include clinical electrophysiology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and cardiovascular medicine at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. Malacoff is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and The Society for Cardiac Angiography & Interventions. He has also served as clinical associate professor of medicine for Penn State University at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA. To make an appointment with Dr. Malacoff, please call 845-794-3379.

Catskill Regional Medical Group and committee partners Sullivan Renaissance and Morgan Outdoors have made a commitment to restore Livingston Manor’s Community Garden at Pearl Street. The committee recruited volunteers for two Community Cleanup Days held at the garden on Sunday, May 31 and Monday, June 1.

Volunteers are still needed to help with weeding, repairing garden beds, fencing, entryways and more. The committee’s goal is to restore the landmark as an edible and educational garden that will benefit the community at large.

Care Awards The following are receiving awards for excellence in care during the first quarter of 2015.

Catskill Regional Medical Center celebrated graduates of its 2015 Emergency Department Nursing Course. The course, which ran from April 13 - 17, will be offered annually and included a Trauma Symposium at Orange Regional Medical Center. Additionally, the course featured specialty lectures that are in line with the Emergency Nurses Association’s Curriculum and finished with an Emergency Department themed Who Wants to Be a Millionaire competition. The course was presented by Catskill Regional and Orange Regional staff members: Peggy Ensslin, Brian Van Ness, Jan Calhoun, Joan Rollins, Karen McKoy, Naim Korca, Shanna Kaplan, Vince Livingston, Robin Gumaer, Linda Magyar, Lori Mallia and Wendy Brown.

Outpatient Care Award Inpatient Care Award Non-clinical Care Award Therapist Kiran Ratala - During a bad snowstorm, Kiran knew his patients needed him. So when his car could not get through the snow, he decided to park it and walk the last 3 miles.

Rebecca Rielly - She recognized the social and special needs of a client, who had no one else to advocate for him, and saw that those needs were met.

Stanley Sanchez - He worked with his team to see that the physical and social needs were met for a patient.

Leading The WayBrenda Cassesse has been appointed as Manager of Emergency Management & Safety.

Brenda has over 25 years of experience in the field of Emergency Management & Safety. Prior to joining Catskill Regional, she served as the General Services Manager for the State of Florida Department of Health, providing safety oversights for four medical centers.

Brenda has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenixand a Master’s degree in Homeland Security from American Military University.

Kelly Roth, RN, OCN has been promoted to GHVHS Director Accreditation & Regulatory Compliance. Kelly joined the Quality Team in June of 2013 as the Manager of Regulatory & Patient Safety. Since that time, Kelly has established herself as a leader and resource in this area. Kelly has helped facilitate numerous Joint Commission, CMS and NYSDOH surveys and follow-up activities. Kelly also coordinates the review and follow-up of cases involving RCA- Root Cause Analysis and FMEA- Failure Mode Effect Analysis. In her new role, Kelly will be responsible for planning, directing and improving functions associated with GHVHS operations in order to meet all pertinent regulatory and accreditation requirements as well as related patient safety activities. Robin Dieckmann has been promoted to GHVHS Emergency Management Manager. Robin will be responsible for the coordination of all EM policies within GHVHS system, and conduct trainings on areas related to emergency management for the GHVHS. Examples of such areas are: HERDS (Health Emergency Response Data System), CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive Events), HICS (Hospital Incident Command System), EOP (Emergency Operations Plan), and provides quarterly reports as to the status of grants, drills and all other mandates required for all three hospitals.

Robin is an active member of the MARO Region Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Coalition, as well as the Hudson Valley Mutual Aid Coordinating Entity (MACE) Team, serving on the Exercise Development Sub-Committee, the Orange County LEPC (Local Emergency Planning Committee) and the Orange County Health Emergency Preparedness Partners. On May 16, Catskill Regional honored all of Sullivan County’s EMS Responders with an appreciation event held at The Sullivan. Over 200 people attended in support and appreciation. Several Board members, executives and staff were in attendance as well as many of our EMS partners. In addition to recognizing EMS personnel and volunteers, six special Oil & Lamp Awards were presented to Catskill Regional employees for their dedication to patient care. Florence Nightingale always carried an oil lamp with her as she visited soldiers in the middle of the night, caring for them. The oil lamp has since become a symbol for outstanding nurses and those who deliver exceptional patient care. Congratulations to all!

SNU Celebrates Nursing Home WeekIn celebration of National Nursing Home Week in May, the Specialized Nursing Unit held a fiesta-themed party for its residents and Chef Peter made some special treats for the residents, as well.

Grover M. Hermann Hospital Auxiliary Holds Annual Children’s Health And Craft Fair Catskill Regional and the Grover M. Hermann Hospital Auxiliary sponsored the Annual Children’s Health and Craft Fair on May 16 at Grover M. Hermann Hospital, in Callicoon. The fair featured health screenings, health information booths, raffles, vendors, a bake sale, refreshments, a chicken barbecue and live entertainment. Thanks to all of those from Catskill Regional who support the Relay For Life Walk held at Sullivan County Community College on May 30-31. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the world’s largest and most impactful fundraising event to end cancer. It unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all.

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, April 19-25, 2015 is

an annual celebration of the laboratory professionals who

play a vital role in healthcare. Since they often work behind

the scenes, few people know about the critical testing they

perform every day in the diagnosis and treatment of the

community. The CRMC lab is committed to quality and

delivering the best medical laboratory science services to its

patients. The CRMC lab celebrated with fun and educational

games and lunch and learn programs. Lab supervisors

sponsored a make-your-own ice cream sundae. As a part

of the ongoing community service, the lab also donated 14

fleece lap blankets to the CRMC Adult Day Care.

Basketball Tournament Raises Nearly $4,000 For Outpatient Oncology Services The 7th Annual Sullivan County Basketball Coach Association of New York (BCANY) vs. Cancer Classic was held in honor of Coach McGinnes and Chris Krummack. Basketball players from high schools and colleges competed to raise funds for CRMC’s outpatient oncology services. They raised a total of $3,971.43 for the Oncology Unit. Participating were: Sullivan West, Liberty, Tri-Valley, Monticello, Roscoe, Port Jervis, Eldred and SUNY BMCC and SUNY Sullivan.

The free event was open to anyone that has been diagnosed with cancer, is in treatment for cancer or has completed cancer therapy, as well as their friends, family members and caregivers. The event took place in the 2nd floor Boardroom of Catskill Regional’s Ambulatory Services Building.
