STA Qualifying Horary Certificate Course
Intensive Residential Workshop, 2010
Since 1996 I have been running residential certifying courses which
teach the principles of horary in a workshop format. These
workshops allow for greater emphasis on client-issues, and can
demonstrate how to cut to the heart of the problem in chart work. I
am convinced that learning through the exploration of modern
scenarios, under the direct attendance of a skilful practitioner,
within a small group of like-minded colleagues, is the very best way
for a student to understand horary’s full potential and gain enough
confidence to work independently as a horary consultant.
In the past I have held these highly successful workshops in
Australia, England, France, Hawaii, Ireland, Norway, New Zealand
and Tasmania. I seek locations that are soulful and energising,
because there is a lot of emotional and mental stimulus during this
intensive course. I realise that students need accommodation which
is calm, comfortable, and creative. Lendrick Lodge is a spiritual
centre and holistic retreat resting in the heart of the beautiful
Scottish Trossachs, close to the birth place of ‘Rob Roy’ yet only an
hour’s drive from both Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The beauty of these residential workshops is the unfamiliar but
nourishing environments force students to leave cluttered,
everyday thoughts behind. This helps to stimulate a sharper mental
focus and a more reflective absorption of horary principles. The
result is a more complete engagement, so that a greater percentage
of relevant information is learned and mastered during the course.
To keep the group focused, places are limited to a maximum of 15
students. If you are interested, book early to avoid disappointment.

Participants only need to possess a
good, basic understanding of general
astrological principles. A core objective
of the course is to develop confidence in
horary practice, so whilst it is useful to
have a sense of how horary works, it is
not necessary to have previous
experience or existing familiarity with
traditional techniques. The instruction
covers everything needed for a
competent astrologer to include horary
into their current astrological practice.
Emphasis is directed towards the art
of judgement, with the realisation that
self-assurance comes through a solid
understanding of horary symbolism,
and awareness of the sensitivities that
can arise in consultation. You will be
given explanations of the techniques
which structure the horary craft, and
provided with comprehensive course
notes and any required materials.
The workshop draws upon example
horaries and recent client scenarios. All
of the most pertinent areas of analysis
are explained, along with discussions of
the difficulties each topic can bring.
The course explores the methodology,
history and philosophy of horary. It has
been carefully designed to allow regular
periods of student involvement and
group activity, which ensures constant
consolidation of what is being taught.
This prevents the risk of theoretical
principles overwhelming practical
assimilation. The course is part of the
syllabus of the School of Traditional
Astrology (STA) and qualifies to the
level of being a competent horary
practitioner. It is a qualification in itself
but also acts as a requisite for anyone
wishing to embark on the STA ‘Masters-
level Course’, which is designed for
those seeking a very advanced level of
theoretical expertise in this subject.

Deborah Houlding is a widely recognised
authority on horary and the transmission
of traditional astrological techniques. She
is known for her research into the origin of
house symbolism, explored in her book,
The Houses: Temples of the Sky (Wessex,
1996). Deborah was qualified as a horary
practitioner by Olivia Barclay in 1989, after
which she worked as a tutor on the orignal
QHP correspondence course. She acted as
Horary Editor for the Astrological
Association of Great Britain’s Journal in the
early 1990s before moving on to become
editor of The Traditional Astrologer
Magazine (1993 to 2000). Throughout this
period Deborah maintained a busy horary
practice with an international clientele
drawn from all walks life.
Deborah has been
teaching horary to
students around the
world through
seminars, lectures,
workshops and cor-
respondence courses
since 1990. She
established her own
school, the School of
Horary Astrology
(STA), in 1996,
actively passing on
her experience via
intensive residential
workshops: a format
which has qualified
and supported many
of today’s successful and well known
horary practitioners. She has presented
master classes on horary for many other
credible astrology schools and
organisations including the Astrological
Association of Great Britain, the Oslo
School of Astrology, and the Faculty of
Astrological Studies’ Oxford Summer
Schools.
Deborah is also known for her expertise
on the techniques of William Lilly; whose
17th century textbook Christian Astrology
remains central to contemporary horary
tuition. She is currently serialising the
release of her annotated edition of his
work on the astrology website she hosts
and maintains: www.skyscript.co.uk
Although grounded
in traditional astrolo-
gical knowledge,
Deborah Houlding’s
employment of
horary recognises the
value of psychol-
ogical exploration.
Her multi-faceted
approach to judge-
ment demonstrates
horary to be one of
the most effective
tools for astrological
insight, both in
matters of spiritual
and emotional guid-
ance as well as
predictive analysis.
