Volcanic Eruptions in 3/4 W! As part of our writing program this term, 3/4 W have been examining explanations and procedures. We looked at how volcanoes are formed and why they erupt. This week we followed a procedure to make our own volcanoes and had a lot of fun with the results! We will follow this up with writing our own procedure on how to make a volcano based on the trials, errors and adjustments we made during the experiment.

Stage 1 History Excursion Calthorpes’ House is a window into an almost forgotten world. Built in 1927, this genuine survivor is a treasure house of domestic history. It displays original furnishings, household appliances and photos that reflect the fashionable ideal of style and taste in the middle class Australian home of the late 1920’s.

Mugga Mugga Historic Cottage stands a testament to the lives of the families who worked on one of the Limestone Plains greatest pastoral estates. The small stone cottage has been conserved and furnished with household items that belonged to the Curley family who moved to Mugga Mugga from Duntroon in 1913.

On Tuesday 26th August students in Year 1 and Year 2 will have the opportunity to visit Calthorpes’ House and Mugga Muga as a part of the their History curriculum: History of Past and Present Family Life.

Students need to wear full winter school uniform and be at school ready to leave 9.15am therefore children will need to be at school on or before 9am. As these homesteads are historic places, it is important that students do not bring their bags with them into these buildings. Children will need to bring their recess and lunch clearly labelled with their name and class in seperate plastic bags.

Both sessions last for approximately 2 hours, with the students in Year 1 attending Calthorpes’ House and the students in Year 2 attending Mugga Mugga Cottage. After attending our sessions we will eat our lunch, have a toilet break and depart Canberra at around 2pm. Our scheduled time of arrival back at school will be 4pm.

The cost of the excursion is $15.00. Please complete the permission slip below and return along with your payment to the school office by Friday 22nd August 2014.

Thank you Mrs McCormack

child’s progress. It helps build friendships, life-long work habits and makes sure learning takes place.

• Wherever possible, dental and medical appointments should be made out of school hours.

• If your child is absent from school, please write a brief note to explain your child’s absence. You must state the reason why your child has been absent, eg type of illness or reason for leave. Saying my child “was away” is not good enough.

• Notes must be handed to the school within 7 days of an absence.

Flying Start News – Painting Beautiful Butterflies We love the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle. On Monday we counted all the pieces of food the hungry caterpillar ate and we talked about how the caterpillar turned into a beautiful butterfly. The butterflies we made were just as bright and beautiful as the one in the story! What a fun morning painting in the Kindergarten classroom!

Phoebe Murray and Charlotte Arentsen enjoy each other’s

company while they paint.

Elizabeth McDonald makes a pattern on her beautiful, blue

butterfly.

John Wilson and Connor Potts have mastered mixing colours to make new colours.

Evelyn Dark and Tegan Allport create such colourful

butterflies.

Joe Stephenson and Michael Foster carefully paint each

section of their butterflies.

Jet Tate and Alyssa Huang enjoyed morning groups at the

play dough table.

Responsible online Citizens Students in Years 5 and 6 proved to be an interested audience when Senior Constable Gary Mutton, the School Liaison Officer from Goulburn, spoke with them on Tuesday, about cyberbullying and the perils of social networking. Senior Constable Mutton discussed issues such as the need to take care when sharing information online, the fact that once pictures and messages are posted on a social network they are then owned by that network and you have lost control of your posting, and the consequences of cyberbullying. The students are now certainly more aware of online issues and are able to act as responsible online citizens.

Students in Years 5 and 6. Final Debate Crookwell’s debating squad took part in their final competition recently when they debated two teams from Moss Vale Public School. Our first team took the affirmative stance on the topic “That Australian circuses should be banned from using animals”, winning convincingly. The second team debated the negative case for the topic “That Australia should introduce a three-day weekend”. Unfortunately Crookwell was unable to convince the adjudicator with their counter arguments resulting in the debate going to Moss Vale.

Our debaters have thoroughly enjoyed the experience being members of the squad offered and encourage students in Years 4 and 5, many of whom were in the audience of the two debates, to consider taking up the opportunity of joining the debating squad next year.

The 2014 debating squad would like to thank Mrs Anne Cleary for sharing her debating expertise with them and Mrs Patrice Rowe for adjudicating our home debates.

GCOPS Music Festival Well once again, the students who represented Crookwell Public School at the GCOPS Music Festival last night in Goulburn, stole the show. The students in the Combined Choir stunned the audience with haunting ballads, songs from well-known stage productions and a finale, accompanied by the Crookwell High School band that left everyone in the audience on a high and cheering for more. Our dancers, despite some last minute changes to their routine, performed an energetic and fun dance routine which raised a huge cheer from their many supporters in the audience.

Congratulations to all the performers in last night’s show. You should all be extremely proud of your commitment and efforts during the last few months that culminated in another wonderful GCOPS show. Your school and families are proud of you…well done!

Mrs Davies

A broad repertoire of songs did not faze our singers who

performed at GCOPS Concert on Thursday evening.

Spell-a-thon News Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Spell-a-thon this week! There were many outstanding results showing just how many sensational spellers we have throughout our school.

Please collect your sponsorship money and return it to the office as soon as you can!

Thank you and congratulations everyone!

What is Anaphylaxis? Anaphylaxis is a severe and sudden allergic reaction. It occurs when a person is exposed to an allergen (such as food or an insect bite). Reactions usually begin within minutes of exposure and can progress rapidly over a period of up to two hours or more. Anaphylaxis is potentially life threatening and always requires an emergency response. Fortunately anaphylactic reactions are uncommon and usually preventable. At Crookwell Public School there are students who suffer from severe allergic reactions and in order to provide a safe environment our policy is to restrict access to allergens.

ALL students are asked NOT to bring nuts, peanut butter or Nutella to school.

If your child suffers from allergies the school needs to be informed. There is information available from the school office to be filled in for students who have been identified as being Anaphylactic, ever been hospitalized due to anaphylaxis, or have been issued with an Epipen. If required, an action plan will soon be sent home to be updated and returned to school.

N.B. If there has been any changes to the medication or action plan, please provide the updated plan information and medication as soon as possible. If you need more clarification on this, please contact the school. Thank you for your understanding in these matters

Changes to News in 1/2

Students in the three Yr 1/2 classes are grabbing any opportunity they can to stand in front of their class mates and share their thoughts, feelings and ideas on topics of interest, samples of work or sometimes just something they get up to on the weekend. We are changing our News sessions to Write Out Loud sessions, where the students will be given topics to speak to their peers about. All students in Year 2 will be required to participate in our Write Out Loud sessions in order to prepare them entering into Year 3 next year. Students in Year 1 will also be encouraged to write about the weekly topic handed out or have the option to choose from our classroom “Let’s Talk About” topic bag. Students will only be required to present at our “Write Out Loud” sessions once a fortnight. This gives them plenty of time to plan and write down what they want to say.

Topics will be handed out on a Friday and sent home with the students.

We look forward to listening to what they students will have to say.

Mrs McCormack, Miss Kemp & Mr Whittington Jeans for Genes Day Merchandise To support the Children’s Research Medical Institute (CMRI) the school forum is selling a sample of merchandise. Next week forum members will be selling the items during lunch times.

The items for sale include:

Please support this great cause.

Thank you School Forum

Artwork Collection Last term students in Year 1 and Year 2 worked very hard to produce amazing pieces of art inspired by the talents of famous author/artist, Eric Carle. These master pieces were displayed in the Art Exhibition where children could admire their work and be proud of their achievements. Parents could purchase these master pieces to keep and display at home. The artwork was purchased for $10. The Art Exhibition has now concluded and the artwork is ready for collection. Artwork will be available for collection from the school office. Any artwork not collected by Friday 8th August will be sent home with the children.

If you did not get the chance to purchase your child’s work of art, it is not too late to do so. Drop by the office and they will kindly help you out. Any artwork not paid for will remain at school.

We hope you enjoy admiring these amazing works of art for many years to come.

Mrs McCormack and Mrs Davies Library Happenings The Book Fair Garden held this week was a roaring success. The wide selection of books catered for all interests and this is evident in the final sales totalling just over $4000. The profit of $900 has been used to purchase books for the students to borrow during their library visits.

A colouring-in and book cover design competition was held this week and our voucher winners received $10 to spend at the fair. The lucky shoppers were:-

Vincent Bill - Kindergarten

Abby Merryfull - Year 1

Jacob Griffith - Year 2

Jenny Murphy - Year 3

Georgie Lloyd - Year 4

Regan Davis - Year 5

Ben Flood and Deon Heidrich - Year 6

A huge THANK YOU goes to Amanda Merryfull, Heidi Ehmann, Gillian McCann, Toni Bickley, Oscar Rose and Joshua Merryfull who took on the responsibility of selling at the Book Fair to make this a successful day. THANK YOU to Gillian McCann, Alicia Lyons and Ms Seaman for helping to set up the Fair. Your assistance is much appreciated.

Borrowing and the Best Borrowers award will recommence next week. Thank you, Mrs Lyons

Year 2 History Present and past family life – History boxes

Year 2 are discussing and learning about how family life has changed over the years. As part of this unit, each student will be creating their own history box using a selection of items that represent changes that have occurred in their family.

Each week students will be asked to bring in an item that represents a period of their family life. Items that could be used to represent events from the past or present may include photographs or drawings, copies of family stories, toys, books, items of clothing, birthday cards or tickets to a special event, or birth, sporting, music or dance certificates. Students are encouraged to bring copies rather than original documents and to leave items of great personal or monetary value at home. Each child will need to bring in a small box, such as a shoe box by next Friday 8th August. Spare boxes would be greatly appreciated.

Please find below a schedule outlining the date and time period of items to be brought to school.
