T he beginning of 2018 has been an exciting time of growth and innovation here at the St. Vincent’s Foundation! As we continually
look for new ways to fulfill the Mission that the Daughters of Charity bestowed upon us more than a century ago, we are proud to never lose site of the fact that we are here to serve all persons, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable.
In this issue of Foundation News, you will learn about just some of the ways St. Vincent’s is partnering with numerous community philanthropists to make positive change in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.
To our donors who make this all possible, thank you for allowing St. Vincent’s to offer hope for a healthier tomorrow!
May God bless you and this ministry always,
Mac and Jane

COVER STORYSt. Vincent’s isGROWINGVISION 2025 is St. Vincent’s aggressive 7-year plan to modernize our facilities. In order to best serve the community of tomorrow, we have developed a two-fold plan for St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside: build a new inpatient pavilion, and modernize our beautiful hospital to accommodate the changing needs of care. Furthermore, Southside will be modernized and partially reconfigured to offer more outpatient services, while Clay County will continue to grow in outpatient and inpatient procedures, along with the need for wellness programs, and expansion of primary care and pediatric care.
May 3, 2018 was an important day in the 102-year history of St. Vincent’s. On that day, we took the first big step towards making VISION 2025 a reality, and fostering a healthier future for our community. St. Vincent’s broke ground on a $55 million heart and vascular pavilion, which is the first phase of a complete modernization of the Riverside, Southside, and Clay Campuses. This
new pavilion will be located along the St. Johns River on King Street, housing the highest acuity care areas of the hospital today, including a state-of-the-art Cardiovascular Care Unit. These patient recovery rooms will include better technology and more space so our world-class physicians, nurses and technicians can deliver treatment at the bedside for efficiency and patient comfort.
This groundbreaking is just the beginning of the 7-year project and a major investment that will save lives, while also improving the patient and caregiver experience.

St. Vincent’s Pediatric and Adolescent Mobile Health Outreach Ministry ExpandsThanks to a multi-year grant from The Lucy Gooding Charitable Foundation Trust, the vulnerable adolescents of Northeast Florida will continue to receive the care they so desperately need. Mobile Health’s fleet of five doctor’s-offices-on-wheels travels to 23 partner United Way Full Service schools, among other convenient points of access, to provide: school physicals, sports physicals, and immunizations to help keep kids in school. Please join us in thanking The Lucy Gooding Charitable Foundation Trust for making a difference in these boys and girls lives!
In Memoriam: R. Murray Jenks Beloved Friend of St. Vincent’s Foundation
Born on Christmas Day in 1924, Robert Murray Jenks has been a true blessing to the Jacksonville community. Affectionally known by his friends as “Murray,” he was known as a lifelong Gator fan, avid fisherman, BBQ enthusiast, World War II veteran, and compassionate philanthropist. For 37 years, Murray served as the managing trustee of the Thomas M. and Irene B. Kirbo Charitable Foundation (Kirbo Foundation), supporting many worthy charitable organizations throughout Georgia and Florida, including the St. Vincent’s Foundation. Across nearly two decades, the St. Vincent’s Foundation has been a grateful recipient of numerous grants from the Kirbo Foundation, thanks to Murray. Their generous gifts have
helped countless heart and cancer patients that represent some of those who are struggling most in our hospitals. In fact, in 2012 a beautiful gift was given from the Kirbo Foundation to name the St. Vincent’s Clay County Breast Health Procedure Room in memory of Murray’s wife, Annabel Davis Jenks. These cumulative gifts throughout the years have also earned the Kirbo Foundation the distinction of Order of St. Louise de Marillac, within the Order of Cornette – St. Vincent’s Foundation’s most prestigious donor recognition society. Though Murray passed away on December 7, 2017, his legacy will forever live on through his compassionate gifts to the St. Vincent’s Foundation in service of our most vulnerable patients.

Friends of the St. Vincent’s Foundation St. Vincent’s Mobile Health Outreach Ministry is able to provide wellness packs to struggling patients thanks to many Good Samaritans who donate simple items that so many of us take for granted. One such Good Samaritan is Aly Leeper. On April 9, 2018, she coordinated a massive effort with her family and friends to not only collect items like: shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, razors, wash cloths, socks, and clothing. These angels also took their personal time to assemble 179 wellness kits that will be distributed to the needy patients of Mobile Health. Our
CEO, Tom VanOsdol, along with other senior leaders and the Mobile Health team, visited with these remarkable people that day to thank them for their compassionate work.
Order of the Cornette | April 11, 2018The Cornette is symbolic of the traditional dress of the Daughters of Charity who brought excellence in healthcare to Jacksonville more than 100 years ago. The Order of the Cornette was established by the St. Vincent's Foundation to recognize our most generous family of donors and show them how much we appreciate their support. It was with great pleasure and gratitude that we held the annual dinner and reception to both induct new members, and honor current members as they advanced within the Order. We thank each of them for their gifts that help St. Vincent’s save lives.

The Chapel is exquisitely beautiful. The stained-glass windows catch one’s eye immediately. They are especially striking because they are so close; one has the unique opportunity to study the artistry of the windows at ground level. The sun shining through the windows brings them to life and displays each pane’s unique tints and hues. Many other elements make the Chapel a beautiful and calming oasis amid the bustling medical center: the Crucifix, the Tabernacle, the wood-carving of the Last Supper on the front façade of the altar, the statues, the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and the reliquary that houses a relic of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Everything in the Chapel facilitates prayer, contemplation, and worship. The beauty lifts our minds and hearts to God.
Describing the Chapel as a hidden jewel is only partly accurate. Since the medical center’s opening in 2013, the Chapel has come to be a holy ground for more and more people. During the day, family members of patients and staff members stop in for moments of prayer. Each day, Catholic ministers of Holy Communion prayerfully bring Holy Communion from the Tabernacle to Catholic patients on the floors. Mass is celebrated Monday through Friday at noon and many members of the local community come each day to participate. Some days, the pews swell to thirty, forty or more people. First Fridays, Lenten Fridays and Holy Days bring especially large numbers. The Mass is also televised to patient rooms.
Those who attend Mass at the Chapel often find themselves becoming St. Vincent’s Volunteers. A devoted team of Sacristans prepares for – and cleans up after – Mass each day. Others share their voices as lectors and cantors. As noted above, some are also trained to bring Holy Communion to those in the hospital, and they also distribute the Blood of Christ at Mass when the Deacon is not present. Others make and donate Rosaries and Prayer Blankets so that they can be distributed to patients. Bringing Rosaries to patients who request them and spreading blessed Prayer Blankets over those who are ill or dying (symbolically covering them with prayer) makes an incredible impact on patients and their families. Truly, those who contribute to the Chapel in any of these ways exemplify a remarkable stewardship of the Chapel and the ministries that flow from it.
The Priests who preside at Mass at the Chapel deserve our special thanks. Because the Chapel falls within the boundaries of the Church of St. Luke, the Pastor, Fr. Andy Blaszkowski and the Priest who assists him as Parochial Vicar (formerly Fr. Pervaiz Masih and now Fr. Jaisemon Xaviour) typically serve at the Chapel four of the five days a week. Not only do they preside at Mass, but they also visit patients who request the Sacraments of Confession, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Communion. They do this either before or after Mass, and on nights and weekends in emergencies. Several other Priests from the local area also offer their services at the Chapel and to our patients. Our Priest Chaplains, too, are sometimes able to preside at the Chapel. We are indebted to each of these spiritual Shepherds and to all the Priests who have, over the years, served at the Chapel!
We are continually thankful to Mary Pat and Dave Kulik, donors and designers of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel. They would be delighted to hear the grateful comments that are frequently voiced about the Chapel, and happy to see the daily impact the Chapel has on our patients, their families, and the wider community. What they helped make possible has touched the lives of countless people. May the blessings continue and increase. What a wonderful legacy!

Red Rose Ball | February 16, 2018For 37 years, the Red Rose Ball has compassionately raised funds to support the most vital needs of St. Vincent’s Health System and the community. In a fast-paced and ever changing industry, this year we saw a great need to focus on the health of our regions youngest residents – newborn babies. Thanks to the wonderful sponsors and attendees of this important annual event, we raised more than $300,000 towards the purchase of several Panda Warmers. They are multi-functional infant beds that offer a reliable source of heat when temperature is a critical concern. This technology directs heat to the infant, and offers other important features that help babies thrive in their first days of life. With more than 2,600 babies born at St. Vincent’s annually, this new technology is essential.
Corks & Forks | April 20, 2018For the past 3 years, Corks & Forks has been celebrated as the premier wine and food event of Clay County. Since our newest hospital opened in this county, we have found it important to hold a special event where we raise money in Clay County for Clay County. This year, thanks to our sponsors and attendees, we raised more than $100,000 to benefit St. Vincent’s Medical Center Clay County and the Community Outreach Programs serving the Clay County Community.
