Sunday’s Readings…

T oday’s readings con-

centrate on loving for-

giveness. Both the Old Tes-

tament reading and the Gos-

pel speak of both our need for God’s mercy

and the need to be merciful to others. How

can we hope in a forgiving God if we show

no forgiveness ourselves? Jesus parable is a

powerful statement of this, and a graphic

reminder of our need to pray “forgive us

our trespasses as we forgive those who tres-

pass against us”. As Jesus says, “Blessed are

the merciful for they shall obtain mercy”.

Mercy is God’s greatest

gift; and we must not

refuse it simply for our-

selves just because we

can’t be forgiving to

others. “Father, forgive

them...”
