I. Basilio Az Cuc, during this his third year at St. Meinrad School of Theology, has been here at St. Ste-phen Cathedral most every Wednesday, 4:00-8:00PM, in addition to being here one weekend a month. The Diocese of Owensboro announces the ordination of Basilio Az Cuc to the Order of Diaconate through the invocation of the Holy Spirit and the imposition of hands. You are invited to this ordination on Satur-day, April 18, at 10:00AM at St. Stephen Cathedral. (There will be no 9:00AM Mass on this day; come to the ordination.)

II. Jubilee Year of Mercy! Calling on the global Roman Catholic Church to take up his central message of compassion, Pope Francis has announced that he is convoking a Jubilee Year to be called the “Holy Year of Mercy.” Since 1300, the Catholic Church has called a Jubilee Year every 25 or 50 years. This Jubilee Year of Mercy begins December 8, 2015 and concludes with the Feast of Christ the King, November 20, 2016.

III. Easter Joy and Gratitude! The Triduum and Easter services were wonderful celebrations. Thanks to the Art and Environment Committee (Kathy Rasp, Patrick Clary, Mary Ann O’Bryan, Sr. Sharon Mil-ler, Mary Horn) for transforming our church from the season of Lent to the Easter season. We extend grat-itude to our music ministers, Eucharistic Ministers, servers, lectors, ushers and hospitality ministers: all under the direction of Michael Conley, Director of Liturgy and Music. Gratitude to the helpers of Amy Payne, who coordinated the post-Easter vigil reception. Many, many others contributed in big and small ways to make things work for the good of our community. Thank you!

IV. Automated Giving: A good way to be consistent and put the Lord first is to set up your tithe as an au-tomatic transfer of funds (ATF). I started this several years ago and I love it, because it puts the Lord first and I do not have to wonder if I have written the check. In addition, it honors my obligation to the church when I am on vacation. Think about it. Talk about it. Pray about it.

V. VOCARE 2015: Reserve Friday, September 18, at 5:00PM at the Owensboro Convention Center. VOCARE (Latin for To Call) is an event to celebrate vocations to priesthood and religious life in our Dio-cese of Owensboro. Yes, this falls on the eve of our SSC Festival!

In Joy and Hope, Fr. Jerry

COME AND SEE!

“He is not here; for he has been raised… Come, see the place where he lay.” “Come and see!” In every human situation, marked by frailty, sin and death, the Good News is no mere matter of words, but a testimony to unconditional and faithful love.

WORD OF LIFE

Human life finds itself most vulnerable when it enters the world and when it leaves the realm of time to embark upon eternity. The word of God frequently repeats the call to show care and re-spect, above all where life is undermined by sickness and old age.

RITE of CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

We continue our prayers for our newly initiated members, the neophytes, as they grow in their un-derstanding of the Mysteries of Faith. Please keep them in prayer.

Perhaps you know someone who has expressed interest in you as a Catholic. Invite them to come and learn more about Ca-tholicism. There is an open-door to all who are casually curi-ous, seriously seeking or firmly committed to becoming Catho-lic. Now is an excellent time to inquire. Our RCIA process is a year-round experience. It does not have a beginning or ending date, like a school year calendar.

RCIA meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM in the parish Media Center. On April 15, Fr. Jerry Riney will present the topic “Conversion, A Lifelong Process.” Come share your faith and explore Catholicism with us! For more information, contact Donna Murphy, 270-852-8424, or [email protected].

INTERESTED IN CATHOLIC MEDIA CREATIONS?

Do you know a saint? Can you get a witness? Seriously, if you know of someone who is a heroic witness, send an email to [email protected]. Visit lolekproductions.com.

FAITH FORMATION CLASSES

Faith Formation Classes resume next weekend, April 19. Enjoy the break, but find time to share faith and the joy of Easter.

FIRST EUCHARIST PARENT/CHILD MEETING

Those preparing for the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist and their parents will meet on Monday, April 13, at 6:30PM in the Com-munity Center.

CONFIRMATION FORMATION

Confirmation Formation continues with our eighth gathering Wednesday, April 15, 6:00-8:00PM in the Youth House. Laura Mathis will be facilitating this session on “The Holy Spir-it.” The Lyon family is providing a snack.

MAY PROCESSION AND CORONATION OF MARY

Our May procession will follow the 9:00AM Mass on Sunday, May 3. Those not attending the 9:00AM Mass can join us near the grotto at 10:00AM. For more information, contact Donna Murphy, 270-852-8424, or [email protected] or Kathryn Crowe, 270-313-0245.

YOUTH GROUP

I hope everyone had a good Easter celebration. I am sure many of you are in your Spring Break, so we will not have Youth Group this Sunday, April 12. I want to tell you an old story of the boy who stood on a sidewalk, waiting on a bus. A man walking by spotted the boy and gave him some gentle instruction. “Son,” he said, “if you are waiting on the bus, you need to move to the street corner. That’s where the bus stops for passengers.” “It’s OK,” said the boy. “I’ll just wait right here, and the bus will stop for me.”

The man repeated his argument, but the boy never moved. Just then, the bus appeared. Amazingly, the bus pulled over to where the boy stood, and the child hopped on. The man on the sidewalk stood speechless. The boy turned around in the door-way and said, “Mister, I knew the bus would stop here, be-cause the bus driver is my dad!” When you’ve got a family relationship with the bus driver, you don’t need a bus stop. If your mother is a US Senator, you won’t need an appointment to slip into her office. If you’ve given your heart to the King of Kings, you’re in a royal family of unspeakable proportions. Let us continue to grow in our relationship with our Lord. God bless you all. Fr. Suneesh

CATHEDRAL PRESCHOOL BOXTOPS

It is so exciting to find the envelopes with Box-tops that you have saved for us. We really ap-preciate the support from the parish!

PLENARY INDULGENCE for DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

In a decree dated August 3, 2002, the Apostolic Penitentiary announced that Mercy Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence.

The plenary indulgence is granted (under the usual conditions of a sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and a prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on Divine Mercy Sunday, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, recite the Our Father and the Creed, and also adding a devout prayer(e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!).

EASTER FLOWER OFFERINGS

We thank all of our donors for this expression of faith and love.

Names recently submitted are: Ann Bresler, Brandon Dollins, Louis Edge, Martin Keller, Bernard and Jane Payne, Ed Wells.

CULTIVATING THE ARTS AT THE CATHEDRAL

Next Sunday, April 19, at 4:00PM, the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert at the Cathedral. This is a great way to celebrate Easter joy. If you are able to help offset the $6,000 price tag on this event, it would be greatly appreciat-ed! The Marketing and Communications Committee has done a direct mail fundraising appeal for assistance from individuals and couples who may be able to contribute. Please make checks payable to St. Stephen Cathedral and write OSO on the memo line. Contact Joey Beatty at the parish office, 270-683-6525, or John Wright, 270-929-1465, for more information. There will be no collection during the event. Come and bring a friend! It is not often that we have the Symphony come to us!

Bishop Medley invites everyone to join him as he leads the faithful in prayer for abuse prevention efforts and for healing for those who have been harmed by abuse, whether directly or indirectly. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Please keep this intention in your prayers.

CHURCH ETIQUETTE

Arrive early and leave AFTER the last song. Park in designated spaces. Be hospitable to everyone, in the church building and in the

parking lot. Reach out a helpful hand to our handicapped worshipers. Turn off all electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, etc.). No chewing gum, food or drink inside the main church. Please remember that what we wear to church really does

matter, especially to others of all ages and backgrounds. Dress respectfully, as if you’re going to share a meal with someone important (and no one is more important than God).

Please make use of the parish childcare facilities when possi-ble (9:00AM Mass).

Bring only soft (noiseless) toys. Parents, please encourage your child to take care of bodily

needs before or after Mass, thus cutting down on the traffic flow during the celebration.

Use your “church voice” before, during and after Mass. To allow others to pray in silence, please save loud conversa-tions for outside the worship space.

In a spirit of hospitality, please fill the church from the front to the back, from the center of the pew to the aisles.

To avoid distractions during Mass, ushers have been instruct-ed to seat late-comers while the assembly is standing (Be on time! Arrive early!).

During Mass, please keep a spirit of reverence; be as attentive as possible.

Be aware that fellow parishioners have come to Mass to en-counter Christ and to deepen their faith. Our participation at Mass deepens and enriches the Eucharist. Our lack of partici-pation demeans and diminishes our central act of worship.

Your active participation at the Liturgy makes a difference to those around you. Respond! Sing! Be attentive!

Clean up your Church. Pick up Kleenex and Cheerios and place them in proper receptacles. Help others as well. This is a place of worship and prayerfulness. Let’s make it so in all our words and deeds.

Thanks, parents, for supervising and keeping a watchful eye on your child(ren) in The Fr. Vaughan Community Center during coffee and donuts and other gatherings outside of Mass.

WELCOME SUNDAY

There will be donuts and fruit/refreshments at all the Sunday Masses. Deacon Curry will be availa-ble for parishioners with any questions.

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER (SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY) (B) START AFRESH FROM CHRIST! APRIL 12, 2015

A VOCATION VISTA

Jesus, by his Resurrection, gives us joy: the joy of being Christians, the joy of following him closely, the joy of taking the road of the beati-tudes, the joy of being with him. Many times we are either startled when this joy comes to meet us, or we are full of fear: either we believe we are seeing a ghost, or we think that Jesus is a way of acting; indeed, we say “We are Christians and we have to do it this way!” Rather, we should ask ourselves: Do you speak with Jesus? Do you tell him: Jesus, I believe that you are alive, that you are risen, that you are close to me, that you will not abandon me?

EUCHARISTIC MEDITATION

“Today the Lord also shows us his glori-ous wounds and his heart, an inexhausti-ble source of light and truth, of love and forgiveness.

“The Heart of Christ! His ‘Sacred Heart’ has given men everything: redemption,

salvation, sanctification. Through the mystery of this wounded heart, the restorative tide of God's merciful love continues to spread over the men and women of our time. Here alone can those who long for true and lasting happiness find its secret.

“‘Jesus, I trust in you.’ This prayer, dear to so many of the devout, clearly expresses the attitude with which we too would like to abandon ourselves trustfully in your hands, O Lord, our only Savior. You are burning with the desire to be loved and those in tune with the sentiments of your heart learn how to build the new civilization of love. A simple act of abandon-ment is enough to overcome the barriers of darkness and sor-row, of doubt and desperation. The rays of your divine mercy restore hope, in a special way, to those who feel overwhelmed by the burden of sin.

“Fixing our weak gaze on the divine Savior’s face, we would like to repeat: ‘Jesus, I trust in you.’ Now and for ever. Amen.
