St. Brigid: A Woman for Our Time Last Sunday we celebrated the feast day of St Brigid. Being a Brigidine school, St Brigid holds special significance for us. Looking at her life, and at some issues that confront and challenge us, it seems only right that Brigid would hold such significance. Brigid, with her closeness to nature, is a very accessible saint to women and men. Those concerned about the environment and the future of the planet draw inspiration from the reverence and respect which she had for the land. Brigid played a significant role in the church and society of her time. She is seen as a model of equality. What emerges from the stories about Brigid’s abbacy is the portrait of a powerful leader, an organiser, a soul friend, a healer, a prophetess. She is a potent symbol of womanhood, showing us, in so many ways, the feminine face of God. Brigid saw Christ in every person, especially in the guise of the poor person. Those concerned with justice issues are challenged by her response. A sense of justice impelled her to share: “what is mine is theirs”. Her life inspires unity and reconciliation. In a world of much fragmentation, with many divides, there is a search for unity, a search for connection, a search for a sense of the whole family, human and natural. The stories and legends about Brigid depict her as a woman of energetic action which is summed up in the phrase: “…hers is a legacy not of words, but of a lifetime of ministry.” Condensed from “Rekindling the Flame: A pilgrimage in the footsteps of Brigid of Kildare by Rita Minehan CSB For the Calendar Opening School Mass: Monday February 9th - 10am Leaders Mass: February 14th - 6pm Mass

Kindergarten to Year Two have a library lesson each week ,and years three to six have a library lesson each fortnight. Happy

Summer Sports Trials We wish Mikelli Garratt, Zara McKenzie and Matilda Proctor all the best as they head to Lismore later this week for Summer Sports Trials, representing the Bathurst Diocese in the sport of Tennis. All the best.

Crocus Orders Final price is in. The cost for the Crocus is $34-50 each. Please send in your money as soon as possible and the magazine will be handed to your child. There are a limited number of extra copies which will be sold on a first come first serve basis. Thank you. SCHOOL FEE DISCOUNT

If you have a child attending another Catholic school

within the Diocese, you are entitled to have them

included in your discount of school fees (tuition and

school capital works levy). If this is applicable to you

please fill in the form at the end of this Newsletter and

return it to school by Wednesday, 11th February.

CDF Banking Banking will begin next week. Invitations to open a bank account with the Catholic Development fund will go home with all the new Kindergartens today. If anyone else wishes to open account, please collect the forms from the front office. Thank you to Mrs Jacqui Collingwood-Cusack and Mrs Tracey Vardy for once again offering to process the banking . Class Naming Change A consistent class naming scheme across the whole school has been introduced – so your children will belong to either a Green (Gn) or Gold (Gd) class in each year group. This will enable us to expand consistently to Year 11 and 12 with the same scheme over the next two years. School Leadership Team The structure of the Leadership Team has changed and so have some of the faces. This is likely to mean that you need to talk with different people this year about a particular topic than you did last year. The new structure and function is as follows: Principal K-10(12): Michael Gallagher Assistant Principal K-10(12): Andrew Casey Admin Coodinator K-10(12): Dave Lette Primary REC: Karla Slaven Infants Coordinator: Kylie McNamara Primary Coordinator: Nicole Twohill-Scott Secondary REC: Peta Bischof Curriculum Coordinator 7-10(12): Ben Thomson Wellbeing Coordinator 7-10(12): Sue Whiteley Stage 6 Facilities Construction The plan is that construction will commence in June 2015. Contingency planning is being carried out for the relocation of secondary classes during semester 2.

Preparatory work for that relocation to happen will begin in mid-term 2. Student Medication:

A reminder that teachers and school staff members

are not permitted to administer any medication to

children without signed, written permission and exact

instructions regarding dosage and frequency. The

necessary form is available from the front office.

Student Photos:

From time to time the school may place photos of your

children in the newspaper, newsletter or associated

publications to mark their success in various aspects

of school life. If you have any objections to this

practice, please contact the Principal to discuss the

matter; otherwise the school will presume it has your

permission to publish the photos and names of your

children.

Clothing Pool

Mrs Chantelle Wheeler has generously taken on the

role of manager. Please contact the school for details

about opening times and contact numbers.

3. Our Swimming Carnival is this Friday 6th February, so there will be no canteen on this day. However, the children can use the pool canteen. K-2 will, however, have to bring their lunches from home.

4. Our canteen needs volunteers. I don't want to have to go back to pre-packaged food. Below is a request for your help, please consider filling it out and sending back to school as soon as possible so the roster can be made up.

CANTEEN HELP NEEDED Dear Parents/Guardians Welcome to a new school year! Our canteen runs on a voluntary basis and provides freshly prepared food on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. As well as fuelling the children for their school day activities, the canteen provides a service for busy parents by taking lunch preparation off the home agenda and a treat for children on their special days. I am asking for our new families and existing family members to put their hands up to help for just one day a term (or more if you can manage). You would be required from 10.00 am to about 2.30 pm you will be supplied lunch and you may make yourself a cuppa as needed. Everyone in your family is very welcome e.g. Dad’s, Nan’s, Pop’s Aunt’s and Uncle’s. I understand that many of our families help with reading and other things around our school, but it would be very much appreciated if you could give the canteen just one day a term. Children love to see their parents and family members at school. We have lots of fun and it is a good way to get to know other parents at the school and make new friends. The infants are really cute as they come up with their 20 cents or $1 and say “what can I buy with this?”

I am really hoping that all our new (and existing) families will be able to help this year. I am looking forward to meeting you. Please fill out the slip at the end of the community news as soon as possible if you are able to help and send it in to the office or please

ring me on 0427501508. Existing volunteers don’t need to fill out this form. Thank you Donna Stokes - Canteen Manager

Provide a relevant curriculum for a changing world enabling students to grow towards

becoming competent, confident young adults who can think critically and make decisions

informed by Catholic values: At St Raphael’s, we recognise the importance of developing

resilience and competence in our students. The Study Centre encourages all students to take

responsibility for their learning and to develop open communication between themselves and

their teachers.

Educate the whole person in a quality learning and secure environment: All students from Year

3-10 are welcome to The Study Centre where they can complete their work with the assistance

of highly qualified and dedicated teachers.

Promote a strong sense of community; built on an active partnership of school, home, parish

and local community: The Study Centre helps to develop a stronger link between home and

school. Students are also working alongside others who value academic achievement and who

are willing participants in this program.
