Honour The Fallen

Last week I spoke to Mr Ian Bignall to inform him that as a component of our Community Service program Stage 2 students will assist in placing an Australian flag on each grave of the returned servicemen and women who are buried in the Manilla Cemetery each ANZAC and Remembrance Day period.

Mr Bignall was pleased with this offer and asked for our help last Friday. Since it was short notice we took our SRC students who were more than willing to lend a hand. The SRC and I went out to the cemetery and assisted with honouring our fallen soldiers by placing flags on the graves of all of the servicemen and women.

On Tuesday Stage 2 students will be transported to the cemetery in order to collect the flags for Mr Bignell. They will travel by bus to and from the cemetery, leaving school at 9.45am and will return for class once completed.

S1A News

S1A students have enjoyed coming back to school after a well-deserved break. We have spent a lot of time during week one learning about the importance of ANZAC day. Our favourite stories have been about Simpson and his donkey, learning about the significance of the poppy for ANZAC and Remembrance days and ANZAC Ted. We found it interesting to read “Alfred’s War” as a class. This told us about the input of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the wars Australians have been involved in. We were able to gain some understanding and empathy for our indigenous soldiers as well as learn about what life was like in the days of the 1st and 2nd world wars. It was with pride we attended our school’s ANZAC service.

M a t h e m a t i c s has kept us busy doing some amazing adding and subtracting. We are focussing on area in measurement and enjoyed d e s i g n i n g and drawing a picture on grid paper and then working out the area of our picture in squares.

Stewart House

Donation Drive 2021

Donate $2.00 for a Chance to Win a $4,000 Family Holiday

Each year 1,700 public school children in need go to Stewart House from many parts of NSW and the ACT. We have had many children from Manilla Central School attend Stewart House over the years. During their stay, children are provided with optometric, dental and medical treatment, emotional support, as well as lots of fun activities and outings.

This is balanced with health and education programs and out of school activities to boost their self-esteem and to promote a healthier lifestyle.

Children attend Stewart House at no charge.

To keep the doors open for the children who depend on the Stewart House program, $4.5 million is needed to be raised per annum and every dollar raised helps change children’s lives.

Disruptions to schools in 2020 directly impacted the fundraising with donations down by almost 40%.

You can help raise this much needed money by simply donating $2.00 and go into a draw for a chance to win a $4,000 family holiday. Envelopes have previously been sent home with primary students although additional envelopes can be collected from either school office.

Simply follow the directions on the envelope and return to either school office by Friday, 7th May to ensure we have entries to Stewart House in time for the draw.
