FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners,

Most of you know that a major event of our parish’s 150th Anniversary year will take place on Sunday, September 29th, the feast of St. Raphael (and his cohort Archangels Gabriel and Michael). The event is in two parts and each needs clarification. The first part is the 12 noon trilingual Mass celebrated by Brooklyn Auxiliary Bishop Octavio Cisneros. This liturgy is open to all—and will be the only parish Mass here that day. (A 5 pm antici-pated Mass on Saturday, September 28th, is for the benefit of those unable to attend the Anniver-sary liturgy on Sunday).

The second part is a reception in the leased school building. This is not an event open to all. The reception is to recognize and affirm current parish employees and officially designated parish ministers (such as Pastoral Council members, lectors, Communion ministers, choir members). No children are allowed, with the exception of committed Altar Servers, who fall into the above category of authorized ministers. The ticket will be issued, in advance only, to the specific minister and is not transferable. It must be presented at the door for entry.

A ticket (not multiple tickets) will also be offered to a small group of parishioners who have been extraordinarily beneficent towards the parish across a wide range of financial support plat-forms, including, not only parish collections, but also the Annual Catholic Appeal and the Genera-tions of Faith Capital Campaign. I am not talking about amount of money, but broad, committed en-gagement over time.

The primary consideration here is that space in the auditorium is extremely limited, due to the Department of Buildings radical reduction of the number allowed by the Public Assembly permit.

The auditorium event is but one of a number of Anniversary year events, some of which have already taken place, some of which are yet to come. For example, “Kids Day”, the date of which we plan to announce shortly. Also, the adult Storytelling event about the Archangel Raphael on Septem-ber 22nd. There will be others, so as to include everyone.

If you do not understand the rational for the above parameters, you can speak with one of the Planning Committee members for clarification.

ANTONELLA’S COMING….. She’s a professional storyteller enamored of the Bible story of St. Raphael, our parish patron. She’ll be in Brennan Hall on Sunday, Sept. 22nd, 12 noon, to recount, with energy and grit, the story of the famous Archangel. Join us. The event is free and lasts less than a half-hour. RIGHT: Antonella and “?”—maybe that demon Asmodeus from the Archangel Raphael story???

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY (from the New York Times)…

“A landmark Harvard study that followed more than 250 college sophomores for 75 years found that warm relationships were the biggest predictor of financial success. Inci-dentally, studies have also shown that volunteering is linked to health improvements in older adults.” (Aug. 5, 2019)
