SUNDAY DECEMBER 3, 2017 | THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
The Parish Family of
ST. RAPHAEL CHURCH346 East Mount Pleasant Avenue
Livingston, New Jersey 07039
Served by
Rev. Jose Erlito Ebron, Pastor
Rev. Joseph Bejgrowicz, In Residence
Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
From the desk & Fr. JoeHAPPY NEW YEAR!
Here we are, eleven months into the calendar year, and the Church has chosen this Sunday, about four weeks before our actual New Year, to be the start of our Litur-gical Year. We begin the Season of Advent this week-end. #ere are some people who make comments like: “Would it have been a better idea to begin the church year with the calendar year?”
I think not. It is really a great idea that our liturgical year transcends and invades all these other cycles. #at interruption reminds us that the Christian community lives out time in a wholly di$erent framework. Just as we have taught the whole world to mark all planetary history with Jesus at the center, and all other time before and a%er him; so we place our “Church year” slightly out of sync with the secular calendar year. #e birth of Jesus centers our sense of time. We begin the Church year by focusing on our need for God, which God began to address in a whole new way with the Incarnation.
During the Season of Advent we see how God builds a future by painting a picture of what life can be. #e prophets tell us that the bleakness of the desert can be a place of life with springs and refreshment and that tools of war can be a means of producing food. God does not build the future through coercion, but through an invitation to embrace a vision and believe it’s within our grasp and we are called to hope in that future.
As we begin this special season of Advent, we are called to re&ect on who we are and take advantage of the many opportunities we have to share our faith and hope with others. May we continue to be a community of hope and may the light of Jesus shine through us as we live out the words of the Gospel in our daily lives.
God Ble( You! Fa,er Joe
