Father Cronk’s Christmas Message

A very Merry Christmas to one and all! As we gather for this joyous day to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, it is my prayer that you will be blessed in every possible way and that your family and friends will know the tender love of our God which prompted the miracle of goodness, love and redemp-tion which brings us together. As we come to the altar, Christ is born again in us. Each of us can feel the possibility of things that only he could bring about: the end of estrangements, the renewal of family love, the birth of new hopes, the achievement of peace against all odds. And beyond all these things, Jesus our Lord came to give us the greatest of all gifts: himself, his life and his undying love. This great mystery of love and sacrifice lies at the heart of our Catholic faith and brings us to the altar again and again as we express our astonishment at the wonder of it all.

Thank you for joining with us in the liturgy of the Nativity of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Parishioners, family members, guests and visitors of all faiths, we extend a warm welcome to all. The Eucharistic celebration is more precious because you are here; it is through union with

family, friends and strangers that we are in communion with Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. “I was a ...stranger and you welcomed me.” (Mt 25:35) Thank you for being here.

The St. Owen Staff Fr. Cronk, Deacon Mike, Karen, Jarrod, Bradley, Mary, Eva, Judy, Alex

A Prayer for Christmas

Good and gracious Father, every good and gracious gift comes from you. Today you send us the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, the true light of the world.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, pour your blessings upon us, That we may share the joy of the Good News of Christ’s birth

Through the witness of our daily lives, Through Christ our Lord and Savior.

Amen

And so, as Advent comes to a conclusion and Christmas Day is upon us, my prayer for you is deep and sincere. I pray that God will continue give each of us the strength to joyfully carry on and to accomplish his will in faith and love. And may he give us the grace to be thankful for all our blessings, especially the blessing of one another. All the staff of St. Owen Parish joins me in wishing you the best Christmas ever. And for being my Parish Family, my most sincere thanks for all you do to make this the good and holy parish it is!

Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!

Padre

May The Lord Be The Light That Leads Your Way.

Religious Formation Schedule Dec. 17, 24/25, 30/31: No class for Christmas break. Sunday, January 6: Classes resume. Religious Formation sponsoring coffee and donuts. Thursday, January 17: First Confession (6:30PM)

The Chosen One Up until a few years ago, I had never seen any Star Wars films. When I was in high school, I had friends who camped out in the freezing cold for a chance to watch a midnight showing of the newest installment. I just didn't get the enthusiasm. No one in my family really liked science fiction or fantasy, so neither did I.

As it so happens, for the last two years, there has been a new Star Wars movie that was playing right around Christmas time. Because my wife and her family are huge Star Wars fans, I joined them on Christmas day to watch the shows. In Star Wars, the epic revolves around a child that is born (Anakin Skywalker) who is the "chosen one." His birth is the fulfillment of the prophecy to bring "balance" to the "force." But as the story goes, he loses his way and goes over to the dark side. Even though he was the chosen one, he lost his way. He was born Anakin but he became Darth Vader. Not to get too personal but this story has resonated with me very deeply. When I was a teenager, I told everyone that I wanted to be a priest. As you can imagine, most people were thrilled. When I entered the seminary, it wasn't uncommon for random people to stop and tell me how wonderful it was that I had a vocation. As a young face, speaking of priest-hood awakens something within Catholics that makes them think that you are the hope of the world. You are the chosen one. Sometimes things look bleak in the Church, but when

young men respond to the call of Christ, it gives people a joy knowing that there is hope for the future. But then I left. I discerned that priesthood was not my calling. Even though it has been a decade since I left, I still feel like I let some of my friends down. They placed so much hope in me. I know that it must have been disappointing to hear that I left and decided to become just a "normal" Catholic. As I look back upon this experience, I can't help but think that it helped cure my nascent messiah complex. It turns out that I really started to believe those people. I really started to believe that I was called to save the Church. Luckily for me, the Church already has a savior. It is Jesus Christ whose birth we celebrate today. Just like the Star Wars epic, Jesus is the fulfillment of the long awaited prophecy. But unlike the movies, Jesus remains faithful to his mission throughout his entire life. Even when he was tempted by the devil to establish the Kingdom of God with-out the suffering of the cross, Jesus quotes scriptures. Even when he is abandoned by his friends and nailed to a cross, he remains faithful. From this we gain the true message of Christmas: even though we are unfaithful, the Lord is faithful. Only he is perfect. We are not. But this doesn't mean that we are defined by the worst things that we do. We have a savior. And he is born this day. And he is Christ the Lord. Merry Christmas. – Jarrod Dillon

CHRISTIAN SERVICE My uncle introduced me to the readings of the Trappist Monk Thomas Merton when I was a teenager. It was a favorite author of his and he started sharing his collection of books with me, starting with Merton’s most famous work, “The Seven Storey Mountain,” which is like a modern-day Confessions of Saint Augustine. I recently came across a reflection Thomas Merton wrote about Advent:

“Into this world, this demented inn, in which there is abso-lutely no room for him at all, Christ has come uninvited. But because he cannot be at home in it, because he is out of place in it, and yet he must be in it, his place is with those others for whom there is no room. His place is with those who do not belong, who are rejected by power because they are regarded as weak, those who are discredited, who are denied the status of persons, tortured, exterminated. With those for whom there is no room, Christ is present in this world.” ~Thomas Merton

This is such a simple idea that we forget too often in our Christian lives. Amid all the controversy and heated argument, this simplest and most essential message of Christianity can be too easy to overlook. We put our trust in no church, or structure, or living person - not in catechism, canon law or Catholic clergy. We do, however, put our trust in a loving God who entered our world uninvited, who found no welcome and still who desired only to be closer to us (for reasons surpassing all human understanding). We must seek always to be more like Him. Peace of Advent be with all who read these words while they struggle to keep the faith of the church in these difficult times. And, blessed be Thomas Merton who struggled himself while he helped us to grasp that faith for ourselves. Blessings to all for a merry and holy celebration of Christmas. Christmas is a time when so many families gather, exchange gifts, share time and a meal together and give thanks to God. Some of you are alone at Christmas, others are grieving the recent loss of loved ones, and still others are separated from family members because of distance, illness, military service or other job assignments. For some, this Christmas season is a mixed blessing, a time of rejoicing but also a time of pain and suffering. Christ came into our world as a sign that God is not yet finished with us - that our future is in His hands - and that He has a future which is full of hope. Christ invites us to hope when it seems like hope is lost, and to trust even when it seems our prayers are not being answered the way we would like them to be. This is the faith Jesus brought to the world as He was born into the poverty of a stable in Bethlehem and as he suffered the humiliation of the Cross on Good Friday. Christmas is a holiday when God wants to give to us more than we can imagine. Advent has given us time to prepare, wait and hunger for all that God wants to give to us from this little town called Bethlehem. This little baby, who fits into our hands as the Body of Christ when we receive the Eucharist, will be placed in a manger, a feeding trough. It’s a reminder that what God gives to us is no ordinary bread, but the best Gift of all gifts. This Christ-mas, pray for the grace to continue to always receive “The Gift” that keeps on giving.

Mary’s Dream I had a dream Joseph. I don’t understand it, not really, but I think it was a birthday celebration for our Son. I think that was what it was all about. The people had been preparing for it for about six weeks. They had decorated the house and bought new clothes. They’d gone shopping many times and bought elaborate gifts. It was peculiar, though, because the presents weren’t for our Son. They wrapped them in beautiful paper and tied them with lovely bows and stacked them under a tree. Yes, Joseph, a tree right in their house. They decorated the tree also. The branches were full of glowing balls and sparkling ornaments. There was a figure on the top of the tree. It looked like an angel might look. Oh it was beautiful . Everyone was laughing and happy. They were excited about the gifts. They gave gifts to each other, Joseph, not to our Son. I don’t think they even knew him. They never mentioned his name. Doesn’t it seem odd for people to go to all that trouble to celebrate someone’s birthday if they don’t know Him? I had the strangest feeling that if our Son had gone to this celebration He would have been intruding. Everything was so beautiful, Joseph, and everyone was so full of cheer, but it made me want to cry. How sad for Jesus - not to be wanted at his own celebration. I’m glad it was only a dream. HOW TERRIBLE, JOSEPH, IF IT HAD BEEN REAL. ~Anonymous (given to me by parishioner Anne Bouch)

RESPONDING TO THE CALL OF CHRIST: I know that many families will be experiencing a hope-filled Christmas because of your generosity to our 231 Promise Tree recipients and an additional 220 individuals from 52 families that were Sharing With A Family recipients. That’s 451 people that were touched by your generosity. A huge thanks to chairwomen Barb Forte, Gerrie Lampertius, Gail Kearney, Susan Potoczak, Michelle Novaco and Karen O’Gorman for coordi-nating this charitable enterprise. Did you see the church narthex or the parish center packed with boxes and gifts? Boxes of generosity piled high everywhere! I’m sure our Lord is pleased. Please know your generosity has truly touched their hearts and is very much appreciated. May God bless you this holy season as you have blessed so many others. Thank you for your generosity and continued support! Blessings to you, your family and friends, and to those forgotten and hurting too. Thank you also for your continued generosity to our St. Owen food pantry. What generosity abounds here too. What a gift this is to many in need. Thank you! As God continues to offer us gifts of joy, peace and love, may we open our hearts to Him…and share His gifts with one another. May love and peace be with you and your families during these final few days before Christmas. God bless, Karen Heuer

Humbug!!! Kidding! What to say. This season has been full of new and rich beautiful colors for music making. Since about early November, I have been rehearsing a different group of singers each night and/or day of the week for various endeavors in the community. Some days have held many rehearsals but just about every day held one over the last few months. And usually, this season asks me to create and prepare as a musician more than other seasons of the year. With all this creating, between providing voice teacher advice for some choirs, directing still others, and being accompanist for others, I've learned a great deal this time around. I consider these lessons to be a gift. I am grateful to be of use and, of course, honored to be asked to create. I wanted to take a minute and share a little information from our latest endeavor. As you know, upon my arrival as director, we introduced a concert series and have been growing as a music program that houses intermediate and advanced level music makers. This time around was no different. Our Christmas concert on December 16th marked the fifth endeavor of the music ministry since my arrival. And as you are aware, these concerts are also created in part for charity sake. It is my hope they will provide an opportunity to pray and be spiritual in a non-traditional way and hopefully move folks to consider donating and sharing things they otherwise wouldn't have. This time around was no different, except our program also got the benefit of working alongside other learners who were investing themselves in developmentally appropriate practice. We made friends and decided to share our process of preparing with another organization. Your generosity with the recent concert will be put to good use as we raised roughly $2200 at our concert for the educational needs of the Thistle Rose Community of the Arts. Thank you. That means in five short recitals according to my calculations, we've raised just shy of $8,000 for various charities. Let me say that again, differently. Because of the music we've made and brought here, and your generosity, people have been fed and clothed and sheltered and taught. It is my plan to continue building our series and music program for us to continue reaching out into our community and world to make it a better place. I consider it one of the greatest honors of my life to create with you. Thank you for your support and for bringing yourself to our team, even if that means you're just a person who comes to Mass here on the week-ends and hasn't shared the concert series or music process (yet). Your presence is a gift that lasts year round that indeed I count as a blessing each morning. Merry Christmas. Bradley

How to make a Christmas offering to St. Owen: Let us count the ways….. (1) There is an envelope for a Christmas offering in your packet, or (2) Give a contribution with Christmas written on memo line of check payable to St. Owen, or (3) Write Christmas on any envelope with your offering, or (4) Donate online. Visit our website at www.stowen.org and click on this icon. The prompts will guide you through the steps to donate to the Christmas collection. All of these options are available to support St. Owen’s annual Christmas collection. All Christmas collection contributions are exempt from the archdiocesan assessment. If you need assistance with online giving or you have questions, please call me at 248-626-0840. Eva Ashor

“The BOOKS” close Wednesday, January 2nd. All contributions dated December 31, 2018 or earlier AND received in the parish office by 5pm on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 will be included in the 2018 statement of contributions.

*************** Do we have your correct address? We will mail your 2018 contribution statement to the address on file. If you want it mailed to a new address or a “winter” address, please notify us. Thank you.
