OPENING ACCLAMATION (Enriching Our Worship, p. 50)

Standing, as able.

Bishop: Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. People: Glory to God for ever and ever.

Bishop: There is one Body and one Spirit; People: There is one hope in God’s call to us;

Bishop: One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; People: One God, Creator of all.

Bishop: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Bishop: Let us pray. O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The people are seated. The Wardens stand near the Bishop. Bishop: People of Christ Church, you have reflected on your ministry and discerned your choice for

a new Rector. Wardens: We have chosen and called the Reverend Diana Wilcox to be our Rector, and she has

accepted. Bishop: I commend your choice and affirm this call. The Wardens escort the Priest from the nave to the front of the assembly.

LETTER OF INSTITUTION OF A MINISTER The Rev. Canon Greg Jacobs reads the Letter of Institution.

Diana Wilcox, Presbyter of the Church of God, you have been called to work together with your Bishop and fellow Presbyters as a pastor, priest, and teacher, and to take your share in the councils of the Church. Now, in accordance with the Canons, you have been selected to serve God in Christ Church in Bloomfield & Glen Ridge. This letter is a sign that you are fully empowered and authorized to exercise this ministry, accepting its privileges and responsibilities as a priest of this Diocese, in communion with your Bishop. Having committed yourself to this work, do not forget the trust of those who have chosen you. Care alike for young and old, strong and weak, rich and poor. By your words, and in your life, proclaim the Gospel. Love and serve Christ’s people. Nourish them, and strengthen them to glorify God in this life and in the life to come. May the Lord, who has given you the will to do these things, give you the grace and power to perform them. Given under my hand and seal, in the city of Newark, on the Seventeenth day of May, 2014, and in the eighth year of my consecration. +Mark Beckwith Bishop of Newark

The Bishop continues Bishop: Diana, do you, in the presence of this congregation, commit yourself to this new trust and

responsibility? Diana: I do. Bishop: Are you, the people of Christ Church, ready to continue in your ministry, with Diana as

your priest? People: We are.

THE WORD OF GOD

Please be seated for the readings

THE FIRST LESSON A reading from 1 Samuel (3:1-10)

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.

At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ and he said, ‘Here I am!’ and ran to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ But he said, ‘I did not call; lie down again.’ So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, ‘Samuel!’ Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ But he said, ‘I did not call, my son; lie down again.’ Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, ‘Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” ’ So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 133-134

Oh, how good and pleas|ant it is, * when brethren live together in| un-it-y!

It is like fine oil up|on the head * that runs down up|on the beard,

Upon the| beard of Aaron, * and runs down upon the collar| of his robe.

It is like the |dew of Hermon * that falls upon the |hills of Zion.

For there the LORD has or|dained the blessing: * |life for evermore. Behold, now bless the Lord, all you servants|of the LORD.* you that stand by night in the| house of the LORD. Lift up your hands in the holy place and| bless the LORD;* the LORD who made heaven and earth| bless you out of Zion.

8

THE SECOND LESSON A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians (4:7, 11-16)

But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knitted together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love. Reader: Hear what the spirit is saying to God’s people. People: Thanks be to God

Please stand as you are able and join in singing

HYMN 680 (Hymnal 1982 Tune: St. Anne)

O God, our help in ages past Verses 1-4 will be sung before the Gospel reading and verses 5-6 will be sung after.

THE HOLY GOSPEL

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John (15:9-16) People: Glory to you, Lord Christ As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. Deacon: The Gospel of Jesus Christ People: Praise to you, Lord Christ

THE RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS

The Bishop, Rector, Deacon and Worship Assistant process to the Baptismal Font. Bishop: Diana; people of Christ Church, Sisters and Brothers: in Holy Baptism we received full

adoption through God’s grace and full empowerment for ministry through the Holy Spirit. Will you work together as partners in the mission of the Church, to reconcile all people to God through Christ?

People: We will, with God’s help. The Deacon pours water into the font. Bishop: The water of baptism signifies our eternal covenant with God. In it we are buried with

Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit.

Therefore in joyful obedience to Christ, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The Bishop blesses the water. Bishop: We pray you, O God, sanctify this water by the power of your Holy Spirit, that all who in

baptism are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

Let us renew the solemn promises and vows of Holy Baptism, by which we renounce Satan and all his works, and promise to serve God faithfully in God’s holy catholic Church.

The Bishop leads the renewal of baptismal vows. Bishop: Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? People: I do. Bishop: Do you believe in God the Father? People: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Bishop: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? People: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Bishop: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? People: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Bishop: How will you each remain faithful to these things you believe? People: With God's help, by continuing in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the

breaking of bread, and in the prayers. Bishop: How will you each respond to temptation and sin in your own life? People: With God's help, by persevering in resisting evil, and whenever falling into sin,

repenting and returning to the Lord.

11

Bishop: How will you each share Christ with the world? People: With God's help, by proclaiming by word and example the Good News of God in

Christ.

Bishop: How will you each follow Christ in your daily life? People: With God's help, by seeking and serving Christ in all persons, loving my neighbor as

myself.

Bishop: How will you each participate in God's redemptive work? People: With God's help, by striving for justice and peace among all people, and by

respecting the dignity of every human being.

Bishop: How will you each cultivate reconciliation between human beings and God's created order? People: With God's help, by working for the just and proper stewardship of God's creation,

caring for all creatures and living things in this world.

Bishop: May Almighty God, who has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, and called us to ministry in Jesus Christ, keep us in eternal life by his grace; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

During the singing of the hymn, the people will be sprinkled with the waters of baptism.

HYMN 296 (Hymnal 1982 Tune: Engelberg)

We know that Christ is raised and dies no more Standing, as able.

SURSUM CORDA (Hymnal 1982, 120)

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (Eucharistic Prayer 1, Enriching Our Worship, p. 60)

Celebrant: It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy. Through the great shepherd of your flock, Jesus Christ our Lord; who after his resurrection sent forth his apostles to preach the Gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to be with them always, even to the end of the ages. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing:

19

SANCTUS (Hymnal 1982, #S130 Composer: Richard Proulx)

20

The Celebrant continues: Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace.

But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people.

Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

21

THE LORD’S PRAYER (Book of Common Prayer, p. 364) Celebrant: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

FRACTION (The Hymnal 1982, S155 Setting: Gerald R. Near)

INVITATION (Book of Common Prayer, p. 365)

Celebrant: These are the gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All are invited to participate in communion at Christ Church. The ushers will direct you. Gluten free wafers are available, just let Diana or the Bishop know you need one. If you would prefer not to take the bread or wine, simply cross your arms over your chest and you will receive a blessing. If you would prefer to have communion brought to you at your seat, please let one of the ushers know.
