Principal: Mr Mark Rathjen

God in all things

Walled in or marching? - Joshua 6:1-14

The gates of Jericho were kept shut and guarded to keep the

Israelites out. No one could enter or leave the city. The LORD said

to Joshua, 'I am putting into your hands Jericho, with its king and all

its brave soldiers. You and your soldiers are to march around the city

once a day for six says. Seven priests, each carrying a trumpet, are to

go in front of the Covenant Box. On the seventh day you and your

soldiers are to march around the city seven times while the priests

blow the trumpets.' (verses 1-4) (read Joshua 6:1-14)

What a contrast. The people of Jericho were afraid, locked in their walled city,

not able to go in or out. The Israelites, on the other hand, were simply walking

around the walls of the city.

Seven priests walked ahead of the Covenant Box, which represented God's

presence. They carried rams' horn trumpets, capable of giving loud, far-

sounding notes. All the people had to do was walk around the city once a day

for six days. On the seventh day they were to march around the city seven

times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.

What a way to win a war! The difference between the two sides was that this

wasn't the Israelite's war; it was God's war. When they followed his

instructions and left the fighting to him, he gave the city into their hands, as he

had promised.

Today we also have two options in our Christian battle. We can wall ourselves

in with fear or we can give the battle over to God, trusting in him. God wants

us to honour, love and trust him alone, knowing that with him the battle is

already won.

Dear Lord, help me to believe that, through Jesus' death and resurrection, you have

already won the battle for me. Amen.

Staffing

We welcome Mr Danton Pearson to our staff for

2017 as our Art/Music Teacher.

Danton is currently the Primary Art/Music

teacher at Navigator College in Port Lincoln.

He comes highly recommended and with many

years of experience in this role.

Sadly we are saying goodbye to Miss Kristi Snares

at the end of the year as her contract finishes.

She is heading off to Woodcroft College for

2017.

Who knows, maybe we will see her back at SPLS

down the track.

Information Night for

ELC and Reception

Families Thanks to staff and Room 9 parents for hosting

an information evening for ELC and Reception

families in preparation for 2017.

A great evening of getting to know new people

coming into our community and helping prepare

little ones to start the next stage of their learning

journey.

Community Worship

Thanks to all the staff, students and families of

our Year 2s and 3s who took part in the

Community Worship service on Sunday. It is a

wonderful way to bring our St Peters community

together.

As always I would encourage all families to put

these dates in the calendar early in the year and

be involved.

Changes for 2017

There are a few exciting changes being planned

for our school environment next year.

Please look out for a letter coming home in the

next few days which will outline what is being

planned. Included in this letter will be an outline

of class structures for 2017.

As educators, class placement and the creation of

positive learning environments for all of our

students is something that we take very

seriously. What follows is the data we use and

the process we follow.

For all our students we gather data including

literacy and numeracy levels, records of

behaviour and effort, individual education plans

and students input into friendship groups.

We process recommendations from:

Current teachers based on their professional

expertise and knowledge of the student’s

social and learning needs.

Learning Support (Special Education) based on

professional expertise, student’s individual

action plans and knowledge of the student’s

social and learning needs.

Internal and external transition meetings in

which the student’s needs are discussed.

Draft lists are reviewed and double and triple

checked. The school assigns classes to teachers,

reflecting the needs of the school.

There is a great deal of time, effort and

educational expertise put into this process by the

school.

Should you have any requests regarding the

social needs of your child, please put them in

writing and send them to the Principal through

the school office.

Thank you for trusting us to do what is best for

your children.

As you are aware, our last working bee for 2016

will be held this Saturday 19 November.

Rostered families involved this time are from

Rooms 1 & B (and ELC). This working bee is

also the last opportunity if you have not been

able to attend your scheduled working bee

earlier in the year – please attend if you are able,

even for a short time will be greatly appreciated.

The usual tasks will be on the list to be done on

the day and useful tools to bring along include

secateurs, shovels, forks, wheelbarrows,

gardening gloves, pruners, rakes, yard brooms

and cobweb brooms. Attendees should

remember to sign in on the day, for insurance

purposes. Thank you to all of you who

contribute in this way to help look after our

school and Early Learning Centre.

Working Bee

Emergency Drill Last Thursday morning, an evacuation drill during

playtime was conducted. We generally have a

drill (covering different emergency situations)

once per term so that, in the unlikely event that

we are faced with an emergency, the students

and staff are well prepared.

Personal Social Physical

Education (PSPE)

Everyone has been enjoying PE week

and the range of fun and challenging

physical activities that Mr Manuel has

organised for us.

Events such as PE Week, Sports Day,

SAPSASA and Knockout are wonderful

experiences for our children to take

part in, but PSPE is also an integral part

of our curriculum throughout the

school on a day to day basis. What a fabulous week to remind us all of the importance of

PE in the curriculum!

There are two parts to this very important learning area – Personal and Social Education

and Physical Education. While there is some overlap, at St Peters we have a specialist to

cover the PE part of the learning area and classroom teachers are responsible for the

Personal and Social Education (Health).

Mr Ashley Manuel is currently teaching PE at our school whilst Mrs Rawinski is away on

maternity leave. Ashley has done a wonderful job of providing the children with a

stimulating and challenging PE programme this term with his knowledge of PE as a learning

area and his thoughtful and considered planning and assessment.

Physical education at St Peters is more than just student participation in sports and games.

Its purpose is to develop a combination of transferable skills promoting physical,

intellectual, emotional and social development; to encourage present and future choices

that contribute to long-term healthy living; and to understand the cultural significance of

physical activities for individuals and communities. Therefore, in the PYP and at our school,

there are specific opportunities for learning about movement and through movement in a

range of contexts.

As with all our learning areas, we use the achievement standard from the Australian

Curriculum to ensure we are covering the concepts needed by the end of a particular year

level. The PYP Scope and sequence provides the framework by which we teach the

children under the following three strands:

Identity

Active Living

Interactions

Sadly, tomorrow is the last day of PE week. We look forward to watching the staff vs

student netball match and then having our very own St Peters Lutheran Colour Run!

Parents and Friends

Special food Day order forms for the upcoming St

Peters Splash Day on Friday 2nd December 2016

were sent out this week.

Order forms are due back

TOMORROW

(Friday 18th November). Please fill out an order form with your selections

and return it with $7 to enjoy recess and lunch on

the day. Parents are also welcome to order too,

please fill out a separate form and return via your

class box or to the front desk.

Please note all orders must be on separate forms

although money may be combined across multiple

orders. Please remember to include your child’s

name, teacher and their room number.

Please also note—as we are using an

external supplier late orders cannot be

accepted.

Thanks to the families from Room 9 (Year 3

Mrs Fox/Mrs Low) for organising nibbles for the

new parent information evening held this week.

Huge thanks to all who donated food and drink for

the occasion and special thanks to the class

support co-ordinators Mel Zybek, Jenelle Eldridge

and Nicky Hart for coordinating the evening.

Orangutan Project Fundraiser

‘Save the Orangutan’ - A Huge Success! On Wednesday the 9th and Thursday the 10th of November, the Year 6 and 4/5 students hosted a

fundraising activity to raise money for The Orangutan Project. The students went above and beyond what

was required of them...not only working tirelessly to complete their very creative

Indonesian themed showbags, but many also made a variety of delicious treats to sell on

the stall. Many students also eagerly volunteered to give up their lunch breaks to

enthusiastically set up and work on their stalls to sell their items to some very happy

student customers!

The students and I are so thrilled to announce that we raised a total of $460.00!!!

This was well over the amount that we needed to raise to ‘adopt’ the two orangutans,

Rocky and Rickina. As a result we have chosen to donate the rest of the money to the Bali Children

Foundation, which provides an educational pathway for disadvantaged Balinese children.

Thank you so so much to all of the hard working and generous students and parents for your support of

these important causes. I am so proud of the kind, giving natures of our students at St Peters.

Terima kasih banyak! (Thank you so much!)

and have fun developing the bodies God gave us!

if you have readers and or R/1 card sets please make sure they are returned to your child’s classroom by

Tuesday 6th December (Week 8).

The Library will be closed for student borrowing from Monday, 28th November

for the Stocktake, which will start on Friday 2nd December.

Students are encouraged to bring their own reading material to school for

silent reading in the classroom. However, please make sure they are named as

we do get unnamed items “returned” to the library.

Thank you for your cooperation at this very busy time of year.
