Appreciation (Thanksgiving)
Our latest LQL value under discussion is Appreciation (or thanksgiving).
It is quite timely to have this as our value this week as we reflect on the term
just past.
It has been a busy term full of activities and great learning. I think back fondly
to our Musical, Book week, Music is Fun, Gallery walks, excursions, ICT info
night, report folders, planning for the fete, loads of after school sport, heaps of
learning etc etc etc. It is no wonder we are all exhausted.
I am so appreciative of our staff, parents and students who come together for
every event and activity and work so well together to make things happen.
At the end of hard work comes a rest. I hope everyone now can find time to
refresh, rejuvenate and recreate as we prepare for the last lap.
Appreciation - Appreciation is recognising and valuing highly the gifts
and blessings given to us and surrounding us. It is an attitude of gratitude
for learning, loving and being. It is a positive attitude that responds in
wonder and awe to, and with respect for, the created world - its fragility
and its potential. (A Vision for learners and Learning in Lutheran Schools)

Let's make it happen! We are getting very close to our fete day. When we come back to school we
will only have 3 more weeks to prepare.
At the moment Nicky Hart and her team are working incredibly hard to put
things in place. To help their stress levels they now need lots of volunteers
to fill the spots on all the stalls and get those donations in.
Remember Target 200!
Please check the newsletter for details about how you can help.
Let's crank it up now and ALL get involved and make St Peters Fest a
really successful day.
Page 2 Newsletter
Volunteers We are starting to get closer to our target of 200 volunteers (ie someone from every family in the
school) for the fete. Thanks to all of the people who have already volunteered, however we still need more
volunteers especially for the following stalls:
Indian & Thai food – Room 2
Cakes and Produce – Room 6
Café – Room 1
Handball target – Room 6
Plate breaking – Room 10
Showbags & Lucky dip – Room 5
You can volunteer by putting your name on the rosters up outside each classroom or if you can’t get to
school you can register your preferred time by text or email to Nicky Hart on 0402 422 832 or
Donations A big thank you to all of the families who have already contributed items to the boxes in each classroom.
Please keep them coming in!! Items we require are:
* tomato sauce * plastic utensils (knives, forks, spoons, teaspoons)
* salt & pepper * straws
* sugar or equal sachets * hand sanitiser
* serviettes * Lollies
If families could please also return the slip sent in the recent fete newsletter to assist with the purchase of
bowls, plates & cups for the fete and return to the office with the money as soon as possible.
Silent Auction Currently we are busy seeking donations from local businesses and families for our silent auction. If you or
your company are able to donate an item or items it would be greatly appreciated. Please email Monique at
Second hand items With the school holidays approaching now is the perfect time to clean out your cupboards and gather
unwanted items in need of a new home. We need donations of good quality, clean second hand items. Some
examples include books, dvds, cds, toys, kitchenware. Please NO clothing, shoes or broken items and if you're
thinking about donating furniture please make sure the items are small (ie lamps) as space in the marquee is
limited. You may bring your items to the storage room adjacent to Claire England's classroom during one of
the following times:
Wednesday 16 October - 8:30 - 9am
Friday 18 October - 8:30 - 9am
Saturday 19 October - 10am - 12pm (enter through gates near the blue hard court)
Thursday 24 October - 8:30 - 9am
For any further information or queries please contact Megan Wilson on 0422 422 011.
Happy Sorting!
Silent Auction This year we will be running a silent auction on the day of the fete and we have lots of great items up for
grabs! Our major item this year is a Residential 1.5KW AC Solar System, kindly donated by Tindo Solar and
valued at $4690.00.
To find out more about the system please refer to the Tindo Solar website at www.tindosolar.com.au

Primary Years Programme (PYP)
Why do we use technology in our learning programme?
It was great to see so many people on Tuesday night at our Technology Information Night.
Thanks to all who came along. This term in the newsletter, I have been seeking to answer
some commonly asked questions about curriculum in general but also questions specific to
St Peters and why we do what we do in regards to curriculum. I thought it would be timely
to finish the series with a technology question.
The rise in sophisticated ICT’s has had a huge impact on society. The skills needed to cope
with these advances in technology are very different from what has been needed in the
past.
“The 21st Century is quite different from the 20th Century in regard to the skills people now need
for work, citizenship and self-actualisation.” (Dede, pg.51)
As the skills needed for life have changed due to the rapid expansion of ICT’s, so too have
the skills that we need to teach the children.
As a result of this expansion, the 21st Century skills for learning were created to help
educators get their heads around what is needed to teach the children to ensure they are
successful global citizens. Skills such as collaboration, communication, digital literacy and
citizenship, problem solving, critical thinking, creativity and productivity are becoming
increasingly important in the world we live in.
As these 21st Century skills were created to address the needs of changing technology, it
goes without saying that to teach them well, technology needs to be embedded in the
learning.
Technology within learning is already happening at St Peters. We have a strong belief that
all learning starts with the student and the big idea we want the children to inquire into.
We then embed technology as a tool in helping to achieve these outcomes.
Next term the year 3/4/5’s have the opportunity to bring their technology to school with
them and inquire into the “How we organise ourselves” theme under the central idea of
“Technological change has an impact on the way communities function.” They
will be learning about the concepts of responsibility and change and will have technology to
help them inquire and learn! Exciting time in Room 5 and 6 and for St Peters!

NAPLAN We have recently received official notification of a problem that occurred in the printing of
Year 5 and 7 NAPLAN Individual Student Reports. This error was identified by ACARA (the
Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority) and the decision has been
taken by the Chief Executive Officer of ACARA to re-print the student reports.
We have been advised that this was a printing error only, and there are no issues with actual
NAPLAN results for students and schools.
As a result, student reports for all year levels will not be received by the school until
Term 4.
We will inform you and send reports home as soon as possible.

Visitor from Australian
Lutheran College
This week we have hosted a first year student
from Australian Lutheran College (ALC). Joseph
Graham is a first year student at ALC studying
to be a Lutheran Pastor. He has spent time in all
the classes learning about how we live and learn
as a Lutheran School.
You might have seen Joseph at Friday night
youth group too as he is working with Ps Ben at
our church as his 1st year placement.
It's been terrific to have Joseph with us and we
wish him well in his studies.

SPLOSHC News Vacation Care/Pupil Free Days
We are again looking forward to a fun-filled two
weeks at Vacation Care. Thank you to all those
families who have returned their forms and
booked their children in.
If you require bookings during the holidays, or
need to change your existing booking, this can be
done via email:
or phone 0450 499 550.
Thank you.
Thanks to everyone who attended the recent
Information Night regarding new ICT initiatives
at St Peters. We had nearly 30 parents attend
which was really encouraging. Lots of great
discussion and lots of excellent questions.
Over the next weeks we hope to post a number
things to keep you up to date with what is
happening. Including, but not limited to:
the information shared on Tuesday night (inc
slide show and handouts);
a place where parents can ask questions and
have questions answered;
some examples of what our students are
doing;
links to places where you can read up on the
what is happening in other schools around this
sort of initiative.
Special thanks to Trevor, Heidi, Bronwyn and
Matt who put things together for Tuesday's
meeting.
Attached to this newsletter you will find the
School Fee Schedule for 2014, endorsed by the
members at a general meeting of the school held

Thank you to our amazing bakers from Room 8
who hosted our final cake stall for 2013 last
Friday. A further $199 profit was generated from
last week’s stall—another incredible effort.
Thanks again to everyone for supporting these

Table Tennis Competition
Group 2:
Both Kaitlyn Millar & Mitch Masters were
undefeated and progress to the semi-finals with
Cooper Kilderry and Chris Evans putting in
valiant efforts to finish 3rd and 4th.
Group 3 results:
Holly and Ella were to play, but Holly resigned.
Ella was then defeated by Jacob. Ashleigh and
Jacob both undefeated will continue to the semi
final after Jacob won their match today.
Group 4 results:
Kyle defeated Sol, (but this was Sol's first loss
so he had another life to continue playing) Luke
defeated Kyle, and then played on to defeat
Sol. Henry the only undefeated player
remaining, met Luke again, (after defeating him
in round one.) Henry remained undefeated, and
both boys move into the semi finals.
Students have been asking if they can play again,
after missing out on the Semi Finals, and the
answer is yes. After playing this comp and the
beginners rounds, Mr Z will organise a doubles
competition. So—students should pick their
partner and be ready to play again half way
through T4.
Swimming As part of the Physical Education program at St
Peters we have added Aquatics education.
This began last year with the Junior Primary
participating in swimming lessons at the Marion
Aquatics and Leisure Centre. This was a great
experience and the students thoroughly enjoyed
the week while learning some valuable skills at
the same time.
This year we have decided to extend the
swimming program to two weeks. This will be
offered for Reception—Year 3 students in Term
4. The dates will be 18 November—
29 November.
The Year 4—7 students will be involved in
Beach safety courses at Brighton Beach. This
will be a two day intensive course where the
students will learn about how to keep
themselves safe at the beach. The Beach safety
course will run on Wednesday 4 December and
Thursday 5 December.
There are some costs involved in the programs:
The program for 4-7 costs approximately
$70 per child (for 2 days of instruction).
The program for R-3 costs approximately
$90 per child (for 10 swimming lessons).

Blue Saint Pedal Prix 24-hour Race
Wow what a great achievement! Rhiannon, Josh, Jackson, Zoe, Laina, Tasman, Maddy, Cooper and Lewis.
240 laps (494.40km) in 24 hours is a fantastic result from 9 of the most determined riders in the 2013 round 3
of the HPV pedal Prix event.
With one of the smallest teams in the category this meant the children needed to ride longer than any other
year we have entered a team.
Special mentions to Laina C who had 2 roll overs in one lap in the wee hours of 4am and still posted fast,
consistent times. Lewis W with a new Blue Saint lap record and Maddy G who beat her last year’s time by
over 1 minute—and 2 seconds shy of breaking the 4 minute barrier.
Also a big thank you to all the families who were all hands on throughout the weekend. Special mention to
Felicity Evans for the Friday night roast and Saturday night casserole which everyone enjoyed.
Looking forward to the 2014 HPV season with 4 rounds for the first time incorporating Loxton. If you are a
year 6 or 7 and wish to be part of the 2014 team, please contact Mark Whitcombe via
email [email protected]

I would like to add my thanks to the 'Blue Saints' parents who, once again, have done a marvellous job of
running another successful Pedal Prix campaign.
Thank you for your enthusiasm, organisation, training sessions and ability to stay up late into the night. You
do an incredible job and the children learn and grow so much through it because of you.
Thank you.

GRAND FINAL
Volleyball We won the semi final for our division. Eden
Hills beat us in the Grand Final. We got silver.
We kept on trying to return their serve so we
realized if we tried to dig the ball back instead of
set it then it works. The game went into extra
time but we lost. We all played awesome.

Boys from St Peters bravely competed against the top two SA State Chess Champion schools.
Felixtow Community school, the same school that won gold medals at
the Girls Only competition in the previous week, also attended this
comp with their boys. Together with Burnside Gold (2012 State
Champs), the Russian Ethnic School (2nd in 2012 state championship)
and the Burnside blue team (yes this school has 20 very good chess
players, who all attend coaching by Mato Jelic), Ben Pruszinski, Chris
Evans, Kyle Gillies and Sol Drozd stood their ground well.
In the end Burnside gold won Gold with their top 4 players winning 22
of their 28 games, the Russians came second with 20.5 wins, Burnside
blue received the bronze medals with 17 wins, and the top 4 players
from Felixtow Community School only managed 2 more wins than us.
Ben and Chris were our best players on the day with 3.5 wins each,
Kyle managed 3 wins and Sol received the Fair Player Award (a block of chocolate) with his single win.
(A team total of 11 wins)
Chess In term 4:
The State Finals Championship is held on Monday (week 3) 28 October, which we missed attending last
year after our Gold Medal win in Mt Barker. In previous years, we were given a wild card entry and joined
forces with Golden Grove Lutheran PS. This year Golden Grove Lutheran PS have won their first gold medal,
and they may need some help from St Peters to make up the team of 8.
The other interschool Chess event in T4 is the Blitz Chess Competition on Monday (week 7)
25 November. This game is quicker and more difficult to win, but is a good challenge for competent chess
players. Registration forms will be available in T4.

Sports Tops All sports tops will be required to be returned
to school by the end of next term. However, if
your child is no longer playing a sport and still
has their top, please return it to school as soon
as possible. Thanks to all the people who have
already returned their tops.
Good luck to Amitie Duval who will be
competing in the State Gymnastics
Championships on the weekend of
26 - 27 October
