Dreams

I dreamed I stood in a studio and watched two sculptors there,

The clay they used was a young child’s mind, and they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher, the tools he used were books, music and art; One was a parent, who worked with a guiding hand,

and a gentle, loving heart. Day after day the teacher toiled, with a touch that was deft and sure. While the

parent labored by her side and polished and smoothed it o’er.

And then at last their task was done, They were proud of what they had wrought, for the things they had molded into the child

could never be sold or bought. And each agreed they would have failed

if he had worked alone, for behind the teacher stood the school

and behind the parent, the home.

MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATION Welcome to the beginning of a new school year at St. Peter School! We hope everyone has had a wonderful summer. Our staff looks forward to meeting you in the coming days and weeks and to working in partnership to provide the best Catholic Education possible for your children. As we begin the year, you will find a lot of information arriving home. Please review any forms and return them as soon as possible. St. Peter School is a Catholic Community of Caring school where the community continually strives to integrate the values of faith, family, caring, trust, and respect into every aspect of school life including curricular instruction, service projects, expanding family and community involvement, and in the creation of a moral culture. Our staff is committed to your child’s education and development. I emphasize that without the assistance and support from you, the parents, our mission cannot succeed to the fullest. Please involve yourself by questioning your child about school, monitoring agenda communication, checking homework, contacting teachers, and visiting/volunteering in the school. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school at 403-500-2079 or your child’s teacher via email or school administration at [email protected] or [email protected] Good luck on a successful start to this new school year. PARENT EMAIL ADDRESSES We will continue to email out the monthly newsletter, rather than photocopying nearly 300 copies for our school community each month. We are asking that parents provide a current working email address. The monthly newsletter and occasionally other notices will be emailed to that address. Please complete the form and return it to the school. STUDENT DEMOGRAPHIC FORMS Students have arrived home with a Demographic Form. This sheet indicates demographic information – names, work places, phone numbers, emergency contacts, etc. Please review the information on the sheet, mark any necessary changes, sign it, and return it to school as soon as possible. The phone numbers and emergency contacts on the demographic sheet are used by the school if your child has an emergency or accident, and for phoning parents in the event that your child’s whereabouts are unknown. Please help the school by keeping the information up to date. Please contact the school as soon as there are changes. SCHOOL FEES A Fee Sheet was included with your package. Fees can be paid by cash or cheque at the school, or on line. Please visit the following link for directions: http://www.cssd.ab.ca/files/parent_resources/fees/Student_QuickPay_Parent_Guide.pdf If paying the school fees is a hardship, please contact the principal to discuss your situation. SCHOOL NUTRITION PROGRAM (LUNCH PROGRAM) Our school community is fortunate to continue to be one of three schools in the CCSD that is able to provide healthy nutritional lunch choices for our students in grades 1 – 6. Students will have the opportunity to have hot lunches on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and sandwiches on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Monthly menus will be sent home. If a student is not interested in the school lunch being provided on a particular day, they are welcome to bring their own lunch. In addition to lunch, students may choose a milk, fruit and vegetable. The entire lunch program is being provided through funding from the provincial government and is completely free to take part in. BREAKFAST PROGRAM A committee of teachers works hard each morning to provide a nutritional breakfast for students who haven’t had the opportunity to eat much breakfast at home or any breakfast at all. At 8:30am, interested students will be called in through the back door to a room where they can have a glass of juice, and a selection of one of the following (depending on the offering that day): toast, fruit smoothie, scrambled eggs, pancakes, cereal, or waffles.

HEALTHY EATING AND ‘NSTEP We will continue to be a part of the ‘NSTEP program. ‘NSTEP stands for Nutrition, Students, Teachers, Exercising with Parents. The message is simple – eat more from the 4 food groups, walk more than before, live longer and live healthier. The result of these changes is to Be Smarter! There is strong research linking academic performance to nutrition and physical activity. We will continue to promote living a healthy lifestyle. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS In keeping with our “healthy climate and focus”, we are asking that parents follow these policies regarding birthday celebrations at school. On your child’s birthday, his/her name will be announced in the morning, and he/she will receive a birthday certificate and pencil from school administration. If parents so desire, they may provide a small treat to celebrate the special day. Some examples of treats may include individually packaged rice crispy squares, a fruit tray, a veggie tray, very small cupcakes – anything healthier that can be handed out at the end of the day as the children are heading home. Examples of treats that are not permitted are large rectangular slab cakes or ice cream cakes that require teachers to cut and distribute, pizzas for the whole class, party bags or party hats. Teachers have been instructed not to accept these treats in their classrooms. We ask that the birthday celebrations be kept at home with friends and family. PLAYGROUND As you may have noticed, we no longer have a creative playground to play on during free time. The structure had reached a state of disrepair and had become a hazard. There were several other schools that also had their playgrounds removed over the summer break. We are all working with central office personnel and our school councils to find a solution to replace our structures as soon as feasibly possible. GROUND CONSTRUCTION During the summer break, the school district began the installation of new sewer pipes on the field just to the east of the school. The old pipes were prone to disruptions. The task of burying the pipes has been completed. However, the work area still needs to be seeded. The fencing on the grounds will remain until grass begins to grow in the coming weeks. INTERNET USAGE We look forward to students having access to technology at school this coming year. Teachers will continue to engage student learners with the use of technology. Access to the internet is planned and guided. Students are required to sign the Internet Usage Form. Please have students return the signed form as soon as possible.

FIELD TRIP ANNUAL CONSENT FORM All students are asked to have completed for them the Annual Consent Form. This form is required for our records. All students must have the form on file prior to any fieldtrip. An additional form with more complete details is sent home just prior to the actual field trip. SUTP’s SUTP Coupon books will be available for sale at the school at a cost of $20. Student Union Ticket Pak booklets can be purchased directly from the office. STUDENT AGENDAS AND HANDBOOK All students in grades 1 – 6 have received a student agenda. The agenda includes a handbook at the front which details very important information including bell times, holidays, discipline and homework policies as well as many other rules, procedures, etc. It is hoped that the use of agendas will help students develop independence and responsibility. We hope too that the agenda will help facilitate communication between home and school. VOLUNTEER ORIENTATIONS St. Peter School welcomes parents in our Volunteer Program. The education of your child is a shared responsibility between parents and teachers. We are always very grateful for the commitment of parent volunteers in the classroom and throughout the school. As a valued volunteer, your assigned tasks will vary depending on the needs of the teacher and the school. You may be asked to perform clerical duties, work with children, help in the library, or assist with school-wide events. The preferences and talents of the volunteers are always considered as we assign tasks to volunteers. Before volunteering at St. Peter School, you are required to attend a Volunteer Orientation. This is an opportunity to meet other parent volunteers and find out more about volunteering. The purpose of attending this orientation is two-fold. The first is to establish a common sense of protocols, needs, modes of operation, etc. The second is to develop a rapport and establish some of the relationships and connections. ALL volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation (yearly) and sign a Volunteer Confidentiality Agreement before engaging in any volunteer activities. Please watch for future dates of volunteer orientations.

PROGRESS REPORTS We have four reporting periods at St. Peter School. The first is referred to as an “Oral Report” which will take place on Thursday, September 21st from 4:30 – 7:30 pm and on Friday, September 22nd from 9:00 – 11:30 am and 1:00 – 3:00 pm. The oral reporting period is interactive in that we seek parental input. Parents book an interview on-line using Conference Manager. We anticipate that all students in grade 1 – 6 would have a parent representative attend the oral interviews. Please note that Oral Interviews are conducted for grades 1 – 6. Oral interviews for Kindergarten students are conducted earlier in September. There are no kindergarten classes on Friday, September 22nd. SAFETY DRILLS We will have monthly evacuation drills (fire drills). Students are expected to evacuate the building in a safe, orderly and quiet manner. In the event that we need to seek shelter, we will evacuate to G.W. Skeene School.. A lockdown is basically the opposite of a fire drill. All students are accounted for inside the building. All doors, external and internal, are locked. Staff is trained on procedures will insure the safety of every individual for any circumstances which might require a lockdown. We will have two practices this year. One will be announced in the Fall sometime before Thanksgiving weekend and the other will be un-announced in the Spring sometime. AMBULANCE CALLS Parents should be advised that EMS will be called when a student’s health is at risk due to illness or injury and the principal determines if this is an appropriate action. All efforts will be made to contact parents or emergency contacts. Parents are eligible to claim back the cost of EMS transportation through the district-purchased blanket accident insurance policy. CELL PHONES The need for a student to have a cell phone is a determination that a parent must make. Please be aware that the school cannot be responsible for these if they get lost or stolen. The use of cell phones in the classroom is prohibited, unless directed by the teacher for instructional purposes. The position of the school is that cell phones can be used only before or after school. Parents are reminded that important messages can be relayed to students from the office and office phones are always available in emergencies.

SCHOOL YARD SAFETY We request that students refrain from riding bikes, skateboards, scooters, or wearing rollerblades or “shoes with wheels” on school property. All bicycles and scooters must be locked up in the bike rack. All actions on school property reflect awareness of safety for self and others. PICKING UP AND DROPPING Off STUDENTS We encourage parents to make safe choices when dropping off and picking up their children. Due to safety concerns, the school parking lot is not to be used for student drop off or pick up. LOONIE OR TOONIE for TERRY As part of the Community of Caring program and daily physical activity endeavor, St. Peter School will be holding a Terry Fox Walk on the afternoon of September 29th. Students will learn about Terry Fox and how he gave his life in the attempt to raise funds for cancer research. All students are asked to contribute loonie or a “Toonie for Terry” as a donation that will be provided to the Canadian Cancer Society to support research into this disease. CALGARY READS Our students continue to be a part of Calgary Reads. This program brings together students with adult volunteers who read and discuss stories. This fantastic opportunity benefits students by having an adult role model for them good reading, as well as exposing children more often to quality literature. We are always seeking more adult volunteers. Please contact Mrs. Spratt if you are interested in helping out.

CALGARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT MONTHLY NEWS

ConnectionsSEPTEMBER 2017

Board of Trustees’ Welcome Back MessageOn behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to warmly welcome everyone back to the 2017–2018 school year. While many of our students and staff are returning to class on Tuesday, September 5, many others in our district work throughout the summer, educating and supporting students in our summer school and year-round education programs. We are thankful to all of our CCSD staff mem-bers. It takes the commitment, dedication, compassion and skills of many to ensure every student has the opportunity to achieve success. To read the full message, please visit our website under News.

Chief Superintendent’s Welcome Back MessageWelcome to the 2017–2018 school year! We will have over 55,000 students heading back to class at 112 schools in our district, with over 5,000 staff members—from teachers, support staff, caretaking staff and our central office staff, helping to educate and empower our students. Our Calgary Catholic community continues to grow, with three new schools set to open this fall in the communities of Aspen Woods, Silverado and Skyview Ranch, as well as three additional schools still in the planning and construction phase. To read the full message, please visit our website under News.

Parent and Trustee Forums 2017–2018Parent and Trustee Forums are an opportunity for parents to connect with their local school board trustee to learn more about education in our schools and work together towards common goals. All parents/legal guardians with children attending CCSD schools are considered members of their local school council and are encouraged to participate in School Council meetings at your child’s school and Parent and Trustee Forums that take place in November, January and March. Please speak to your child’s school principal to get involved or visit our website under Parents/School Council.

Interested in becoming a Catholic School Trustee?Elections for school trustees are held at the same time as local government elections. School trustees are elected by Catholic school taxpayers and serve a four-year term. The deadline to file nomination papers, which will confirm a candidate’s intention to run as a local school board trustee, is Monday, September 18, 2017. The municipal election takes place on Monday, October 16, 2017. Please visit the City of Calgary website or the Alberta School Boards Association for more information.

2017–2018 Bus Schedules & RoutesUpdated bus schedule and route information for the 2017–2018 school year has been posted. Please visit our CCSD website under Parents/Transportation/Schedules & Routes. Click the PDF file of your child’s school name to access detailed bus schedule and route information. The CCSD is committed to providing a safe, efficient and economical method of transporting students to school.

2017–2018 District Faith Theme“Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.” (Matthew 7:7). In the initial year of our new three-year faith theme, we are focusing on the first part of the verse, “Ask and it will be given you.” As servants of God, we are always called to discern his will, and through prayer we develop a closer relationship with Him who loves us. As the Church teaches us, “prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God.” In this coming year, we will be continually invited to engage in a deepened prayer life.

Did you know?

Over 125 photos were shared to the CCSD’s Summer Holidays 2017 album on the district Facebook page. It looked like everyone had a wonderful summer!
