PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Staffing news It is with great pleasure that I announce that Mrs Joelle Lake will step into the role of Deputy Principal of Ss Peter & Paul’s in 2018. I look forward to working with Joelle as we continue to take SSPP forward. This Friday Peter Lynch will take leave to have reconstructive knee surgery. We wish Peter a speedy recovery. Signora Mazzone will step into Room 1 for the remainder of the year. Prep Orientation Yesterday the staff, students and I had the privilege of welcoming our Prep students for 2018 for their first Prep orientation session. Seeing new Prep students arrive heralds the nearing of the end of primary school for the Year 6 students. I commend the Year 6 students for the way in which they have continued to remain focused on their learning, despite being in a stage of transition. Over the past few weeks we have hosted many secondary schools and it is most impressive to hear from them just how well our students conduct themselves. Many parents have commented that they have seen 2 new display boards up in our neighbourhood advertising our school. While these are great and I am most appreciative to our sponsors, word of mouth publicity is always most effective! Don't forget to spread the word amongst your neighbours, sporting clubs etc about our great school! Booklists We have been doing considerable work in ensuring that we get best value for money, & convenience, in relation to stationary supplies for our families in 2018. We have tendered our requirements to 3 major suppliers & found that by having stationary delivered to the school, in bulk, will provide our families a saving of approximately $10 per child on these items. Children will arrive at the beginning of Term 1, 2018 to find all their stationary needs already unpacked and labelled ready to go by their teachers. The stationary fee will now be added to the first term invoice. Save the date! On Wednesday 6th December we will be hosting a morning tea to say thank you to all our parent helpers who have so generously helped our school community over the year. There are many ways that parents help the school, whether it be via classroom help, SAB or CEG committee, running an event such as the disco, operating the uniforms shop/s, helping out at a working bee etc. The list goes on! We would love to have this opportunity to say a big thank you! Please mark it in your diary. Monday 18th December we will celebrate the Christmas season with whole school Carols & family picnic. The evening will begin with carols at 6pm. All children will be involved and are expected to be present. We are currently working with Manningham Seniors to involve the Manningham Community Choir also!. It is anticipated that the formal part of the night will run from 6-7.15pm. Congratulations & Welcome... Congratulations go to Aban (Rm 12), Sepideh and Edward on the arrival of their new baby boy, who was born last Friday. Welcome to Jonathan and his family to Ss Peter and Paul's. Jonathan has joined Rm 14 in Year 3. Please read further on in today’s newsletter about the Stillness Meditation program that the children participate in every fortnight.

SCHOOL NEWS

Italian Day Tomorrow we are eagerly anticipating lots of fun as we celebrate all things Italian! Our day will begin with a parade at 9.15am in the courtyard. Children are invited to come along dressed in either Italian colours or in something that represents Italy. From 10am - the children will move into their House Colour Groups for activities and cooking demonstrations. We are lucky to have Francesco (Michelle and Corrine’s dad) demonstrating pizza making and cooking yummy pizza’s for lunch, as well as pasta making, Mona Lisa art and of course pasta art! From 12.45pm pizza and gelato will be served. In the afternoon we will enjoy a performance by Fillipo, who will entertain us with the la fisarmonica (accordion) and performs songs and dances of Italy. Parents are most welcome to pop in during the day to see the learning taking place. Grazie! Signora Mazzone for overseeing the running of this day Learning around the rooms Recently a learning walk was conducted through the school that asked individual students the simple question “What are you learning?” (As opposed to “what are you doing?”). Research tells us that if students are able to identify why they are doing a task, then they are much more likely to persist at the task to the point of completion and have success at the task, thus feeling a greater sense of achievement. Some golden words for you to enjoy .. “Today I am learning to spell. It is important to learn how to spell correctly so that the teachers can understand my work and so that I can write cards to people for their birthday to show that I care.” “Today I am learning how to do powerpoints and this will help me with my future life because I will be able to put together presentations for campaigns.” “Today I am typing up a procedure for ‘How to be an effective learner’. My procedure includes:- Having confidence in yourself Healthy work environment Patience with self and others Feedback from peers and giving feedback to peers Learning goals Trying your best This is a good idea because when I want to try something new that is a bit a of challenge l have a procedure to follow.” Have a great week ahead! Extra Curricular News Hot Shots Tennis Today our senior tennis teams are participating in the Region Hot Shots Tennis Finals! To have two teams reaching this high level of competition is quite remarkable and we are extremely proud of our Girls Team and our Open Team. Stay tuned for our report in next week’s newsletter! Jump Rope for Heart The whole school participated in our “Jump Off” day on Thursday 2nd November. The juniors worked through their jump rotations in the courtyard while the seniors used the main playground area to perform their skills including criss cross, triangle and link skipping! Each station was capably led by our Year Six students and we thank them for their patience and dedication to our cause. A fabulous afternoon of heart health! Please keep encouraging your children to skip away, it has been terrific to see so many skipping ropes on the playground at recess and lunchtime! Skipping really is such an easy way to stay fit and healthy! We hope you enjoy the photos of our “Jump Off” day in today’s newsletter! Footsteps The senior students are participating in a five week dance program as part of their Health and Physical Education program. These sessions are run by Footsteps dance company and will prepare the students for some special end of year performances! The children have enjoyed their first session and look forward to developing their movement and teamwork skills. Many thanks, Helen Kalac and Stephanie D’Astoli - Ss Peter & Paul’s Sport
