The Children of St. Paul’s

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the

kingdom of heaven belongs.” Matthew 19:14

Recently, I’ve had a number of people tell me how fun it is to see children going throughout our church. Our kids are a vital part of our mission and ministry. And what we have to offer is crucial. It reminds me of a story: Two young children were talking with each other about parent problems. One of them complained to the other, saying: “First they teach you to talk, then they teach you to walk, and as soon as you learn how, they tell you to ‘Sit down and shut up!’” Throughout our gospels lessons many attempted to have those in the margins of society be quiet. They weren’t considered very important members of God’s kingdom. This certainly included children. But Jesus felt otherwise. He knew that, not only were they an important piece of the kingdom but there was much to learn from the even the smallest members of their community as well. We are so blessed to have a wonderful and lively group of young people here at St. Paul’s. Through the efforts of our devoted staff, as well as dedicated parents, we have much to teach our children. However, we have much to learn from them too. Our worship, education, and parish events are much livelier and richer with them present. They always add a “joyous noise” to any event.

It is certainly a call to make the church a warm and welcoming place for all family members. What children remember about St. Paul’s will stay with them for years to come. Let us all remind them that in the presence of Christ they are first and foremost in God’s realm. Remember, the children and the youth of St. Paul’s are not the future of the church, they ARE the church….right now. They are a vital and integral part of the mission of our parish. As we move through our usual routines let us all give thanks for our children and pray that we may teach them in the way of our Lord as we ask for the grace to learn from them as well. In many ways we are all children of St. Paul’s and children of God. And it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs. God’s Peace---Rusty+

GATHERING FOR GOOD: SCAVENGER HUNT! Wednesday, September 26, 6:00-7:30 pm

Everyone is invited to the first of our monthly parish-wide fellowship events on September 26 from 6:00-7:30 pm! Come and enjoy a simple meal (for $5 per person or $20 max per family) and spend time with your parish family. This month we will have a special scavenger hunt!

PATTI CALLAHAN HENRY HEADLINES BOOK CLUB EVENT Sunday evening, September 30, 2018 Open to all in St. Paul's Congregation

Noted New York Times Best-selling author Patti Callahan Henry will the guest of the Bad Girl's Book Club on Sunday evening, Sept. 30 for a St. Paul's only event. This is an exciting opportunity for our St. Paul's family and I encourage you to mark your calendar now for this special evening, not to be missed!

Ms. Henry will be speaking to us and fielding questions about her upcoming release - Becoming Mrs. Lewis - in Otey Hall, from 6:30 - 8:30 pm - doors open for seating and light appetizers, wine and iced tea at 6:00 pm. Becoming Mrs. Lewis is a novel about Joy Davidman Lewis, the woman who would become the wife of "confirmed bachelor" and acclaimed British author, C. S. Lewis. Their relationship, borne of letter-writing, eventually flourished into a friendship and lead to their brief marriage, ended too soon by Joy's death by cancer.

Ms. Henry has long been fascinated by C. S. Lewis, dating to her reading The Narnia Tales when she was a child. Throughout her life, she read more of Lewis and upon learning of his marriage to Mrs. Davidman, she couldn't "get away from" the subject. Extensive research lead to hew newest novel, and you can hear her story yourself in a few short weeks!

This special event will not be open to the public so that we can seat as many of you in Otey Hall as possible. Important to note: St. Paul's will not offer book sales Sunday evening, purchases will only be at Landmark that Sunday afternoon, 14 East Main Street; Franklin; 615-791-6400; www.landmarkbooksellers.com. Landmark will host Ms. Henry from 3:00 to 5:00 that afternoon for a reception and book signing that is open to the public.

ANNUAL BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS Sunday, October 7, 2018 - 2:00 pm

Plan to come join us and bring your pet to our Annual Blessing of the Animals. We will gather in the side courtyard for the service. If your pet is sick or if you have lost a pet family member this past year, and you would like to have their name included in the prayers in the service that day, please send information to monna@stpaulsfranklin.com. Be sure to include your pet’s name, type of animal, whether sick or has died, and your name.

Women of St. Paul’s Annual English Tea

The English Tea will be held on Saturday, December 8th, with seatings at both 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Tickets for parishioners will go on sale Wednesday, September 26th, at 9:00 am. Tickets for the general public will go on sale Wednesday, October 10th, at 9:00 am.

The goal of the small group program is to develop small Christian communities within the larger church. We believe that through these small communities, and by the working of the Holy Spirit among us, we can transform and change our lives as individuals, as small communities, and ultimately the larger community of which the group is a part.

Small groups are gatherings of 6 to 12 people that meet regularly for fellowship, Bible study and prayer. Each small group meeting includes time for fellowship, group discussion, and prayer; the group discussion is based on scriptural, theological, or spiritual themes; each group is led by a volunteer leader/facilitator; meeting days and times are determined by each individual group; meetings are typically weekly but some groups meet every other week; meetings typically last an hour to hour and a half; groups typically meet September until the week before Thanksgiving, then resume in January through May.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Paul’s is called the Witty Knitters. We will meet for our 2018/19 start up meeting on September 27 in Founders Hall from 9:30 to 11:30. Anyone is welcome. We sit and knit, crochet or otherwise stitch prayer shawls for the parish priests to take to members who might be in need of some special comforting. Some folks also work on baby blankets to be given to new babies in the Moses baskets. We have a stash of yarn if you want to knit and need yarn. If you have left over yarn, you could donate it to our stash. If you would like to learn to knit or crochet, we have people who can help you learn. Most of the stitching is done at home, but it is fun to sit and chat once a month to see the latest projects. We would love to see new stitchers in our group. Ministry Reminders

What is a dinner group? Very simply, a dinner group is a way to meet and get to know people in our church family. How are dinner groups formed and how do they function? People who sign up are randomly assigned to a monthly dinner group – typically of 8 to 10 people. One person or couple begins by hosting a dinner. When the group gets together, it is decided who will host next and when they will meet. The hosts provide the main course and let the rest of the group know what to bring to round out the meal. A group can decide to meet for breakfast, lunch, or even cocktails at a restaurant or home! Some groups include: • Traditional Dinner Groups – includes couples

and single folks - usually meets in homes • Families with Young Children Groups – this is

just what it sounds like and with advance planning, childcare can be provided in the St. Paul’s nursery while the group meets.

• Women’s Restaurant Group – Women meet at 5:30 on the 3rd Monday of each month in local restaurants.
