Theory of cultural lag:(Which was coined by William Ogburn in 1915)

The phenomenon whereby cultural elements, such as religious beliefs, change more slowly than structural elements, such as technological

innovations. According to this theory, Social problems and conflicts are caused by this lag and Cultural Lag Theory suggests that a period of maladjustment occurs when the non-material culture is struggling to

adapt to new material conditions

Perhaps Ogburn's most enduring intellectual legacy is the

Theory of social change he offered in 1922

William Ogburn argued that technology was the basic cause of social change. In particular, he identified three processes by which technology drove social change: Invention, discovery, and diffusion

(The aforementioned invention of the Plow is one example of a physical invention, but the invention of economic and political systems are also types

of social invention)

Invention can refer the combination and transformation of existing materials into new items, it can also refer to social invention and the propagation of new

ideas.

Page 13: William Fielding Ogburn

It refers to new ways of understanding reality, An example is the “discovery” of North America by Columbus; while the continent

existed prior to Columbus setting sail. But this knowledge was new to Europeans

It Refers to the Spread of Either an Invention or Discovery from one Area to Another

>>>>>>These things, Invention, Discovery and Diffusion accumulate, increasing the potential for more inventions; the appearance of a new invention causes reactions in other parts of culture and, as society attempts to reestablish equilibrium through adjustment, society also evolves.
