be impossible for you.” —Matthew 17:20

whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,

whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there

is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

—Philippians 4:8

Inclusiveness “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor

free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one

in Christ Jesus.” —Galatians 3:28

Compassion“When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he

had compassion on them and healed their sick.”

—Matthew 14:14

Social Justice“He has showed you what is good; and what the Lord

requires of you: to do justice, and to love kindness and

to walk humbly with your God.” —Micah 6:8

Stewardship“There will come seven years of great plenty

throughout all the land of Egypt. After them there

will arise seven years of famine, and all the plenty will

be forgotten in the land of Egypt; the famine will

MissionIn the spirit of the Gospels, the mission of Trinity Church Wall Street is to build generations of faithful leadership,

to build up neighborhoods, and to build financial capacity for holy service in New York City and around

the world. Our mission is grounded in our core values.

VisionWe seek to serve and heal the world by building neighborhoods that live gospel truths, generations of

faithful leaders, and sustainable communities.

Core Values

Core Values guide us in carrying out our mission and realizing our vision.

By their nature, core values are touchstones for prayer, discernment, ongoing conversation, and action. We seek

a deep understanding and ongoing engagement with Trinity’s Core Values. Over the years, we will continue

reflecting on what our Core Values mean in their application; how they challenge and inform decisions and actions

in Trinity’s ministries, and how they help our ministries be aligned with our mission and vision.

Welcome to St. Paul’s ChapelPlease add your voice and heart to the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus’ Table, and everyone’s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God’s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together.

If you would like to learn more about the Episcopal Church, or how you can become a member of Trinity Church, please visit www.trinitywallstreet.org/membership.

About this ServiceEaster is the highest holiday of the Christian year—a celebration of the event that defines our Church: the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, fulfilling the scriptural foretelling of the Messiah. Like spring itself, the Paschal feast brings the promise of new life. The Easter season, also known as Eastertide, continues until the Day of Pentecost, which occurs on June 4 this year.

After weeks of preparation and reflection, more joyful elements return to the liturgy. The service is restored from the penitential order, and the confession is dormant throughout this jubilant season. Gloria, a song of praise, replaces the Trisagion, a supplication for mercy; and the word alleluia (“Praise the Lord”)—which has not been spoken during the past 40 days of Lent—is proclaimed enthusiastically, and will remain in acclamations, fractions, hymns, and dismissals throughout Eastertide.

The Liturgy of the WordThe First Reading Acts 17:22-31

Reader A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, “Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him—though indeed he is not far from each one of us. For ‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we too are his offspring.’

“Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm Psalm 66:7-9, 14-18

Reader Let us read from Psalm 66 responsively by half-verse.

Bless our God, you peoples; *People make the voice of his praise to be heard;

Reader Who holds our souls in life, *People and will not allow our feet to slip.

Reader For you, O God, have proved us; *People you have tried us just as silver is tried.

Reader Come and listen, all you who fear God, *People and I will tell you what he has done for me.

Reader I called out to him with my mouth, *People and his praise was on my tongue.

Reader If I had found evil in my heart, *People the Lord would not have heard me;

Reader But in truth God has heard me; *People he has attended to the voice of my prayer.

Reader Blessed be God, who has not rejected my prayer, *People nor withheld his love from me.

The Second Reading 1 Peter 3:13-22

Reader A Reading from the first letter of Peter.

Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.

For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.

The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel John 14:15-21

Please stand as you are able.

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Deacon Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.”

The Gospel of the Lord.People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon The Rev. Phillip A. Jackson

Silence follows the sermon.

The Nicene Creed BCP p. 358

Please stand as you are able.

Celebrant We believe in one God,All the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer B BCP p. 367/379

Celebrant The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Celebrant Lift up your hearts.People We lift them to the Lord.Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SanctusAll Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Page 10: St. Paul s Chapel · For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen

10

Celebrant We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the Blessed Mary, Saint Paul, and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

All AMEN.

hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The image on the bulletin cover is the Trinity Seal. Inspired by The Revelation to John 10:1–10, it represents the arrival of the first Anglican Church in the colony of New York in 1697. The seal features a “mighty angel” with a “face like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire,” straddling the sea and the land and transferring the Gospel, brought from England by the ship, to a child, a symbol of the young colony of New York. In the scroll below the angel’s feet appear the words “JURO TEMPUS NON FORE AMPLIUS” which translate as “I Swear That There Shall Be No More Delay,” referring to the urgency of establishing the Church. Bulletin cover poetry is from the Revised Common Lectionary project sponsored by the Jean and Alexander Heard Library and the Vanderbilt Divinity Library, a division of the Heard Library.
