The Pontifical Good Friday Collection: Holy Land

Every year on Good Friday, a collection is taken up in Catholic Churches to support the work of the Franciscans working in the Holy Land. Christians there rely heavily on the help that comes to them during this special day in the Church and our life of faith.

The Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land have the unique responsibility of caring for the Holy Places as well as caring for the Christians living in the Holy Land. It is vital that we care for the Christians living in the Holy Land in order to maintain a Christian presence in a land that is filled with a majority Islamic and Jewish population.

The Collection for the Holy Land, in the words of Paul VI is “not only for the Holy Places but above all for those pastoral, charitable, educational, and social works which the Church supports in the Holy Land for the welfare of their Christian brethren and of the local communities.” Please be generous!

Act of Spiritual Communion

The Church encourages frequent, even daily, Holy Communion, but if at any time we cannot go to Mass in or out of this season of the coronavirus, we can still unite ourselves to the Eucharist through making a spiritual Communion. By making an Act of Spiritual Communion, we express our faith in Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist and ask him to unite himself with us. Here is the Act of Spiritual Communion written by St. Alphonsus de Liguori:

My Jesus, I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

Good Friday — Fast and Abstinence ABSTINENCE: Everyone fourteen years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat. FAST: Everyone eighteen years of age and older but under the age of sixty is also bound to fast. The law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

Dear friends, Today, Palm Sunday begins the most holy week of our year and what a way to begin! Sequestered in our homes, unable to gather as a community of faith, we are still called to celebrate this sacred time. While we cannot be together personally, I invite you to celebrate along with me by viewing the sacred liturgies in our church throughout this week. They can be found on our parish website at www.stpatricksparish.com. Simply scroll down until to see the video link, click on it and you will be able to pray along with me. Let us then prepare to celebrate respectfully the liturgies of Holy Week beginning with Mass at 10:00 A.M. this Sunday, Palm Sunday. This will be followed by the liturgies of the Sacred Triduum, our high holy days (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Saturday). These, too, will be live streamed and can be viewed on our parish website at the times noted in this bulletin. While this Lent and Holy Week are certainly unique for all of us, I pray that the extra time spent in prayer will bring you grace, joy and a sense of the risen Lord's presence during these challenging days. It is my hope and prayer, too, that this experience of Holy Week will strengthen us as a parish family. Be assured that you and your families have been and continue to be remembered by me in daily prayer, especially the prayer of the holy Mass which I have been celebrating each day in our parish church. May the grace and peace of our risen Lord, Jesus be with us now, and forever. Have a Holy Week and be assured that God is with us! Monsignor Michael Padazinski
