Advent Wreath Lighting Ceremony – Year C Fourth Sunday of Advent (Peace — Micah 5: 2 - 5a) President: Our Advent journey is almost complete,
and the Christ child will soon be here. President: As we light the fourth candle, we are
reminded of the peace that only Christ can give.
Reader 2 lights the candle Reader 1: But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah,
who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace. (Micah 5 :2-5a)
Reader 2: God’s peace is meant for the whole of
creation; together, we anticipate the day of his coming.
7 |
All: God our Saviour, you alone are the Prince of Peace who shall rule with justice and love. As we seek to be bearers of your peace in the world, may we find our security in your grace — and may we be sources of peace and safety to others. Amen.

The Fourth Sunday of Advent
Lections are from the Revised Common Lectionary.
Daily Readings Scripture texts are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.
Theme of the Lections God’s promise of favour to the house of David and to the people is fulfilled in Jesus. A mystery is revealed. The promise now includes the Gentiles.
Lesson – Micah 5: 2 – 5a “Bethlehem in Ephrathah” was David’s city.
The ancient prophecy promises that a new ruler for Israel whose roots are far back in the past will come from this city
Canticle 15 The Magnificat (The Song of Mary).
Epistle – Hebrews 10: 5 - 10 Jesus, through the offering of his body for our salvation, does away with ritual, sacrifices and offerings that are made in obedience to law and creates a new sort of obedience.

Gospel – Luke 1: 39 - 45 Mary goes to visit her relative Elizabeth in the uplands of Judah. Elizabeth is expecting a child who is to be John the Baptist. Elizabeth is filled with joy at Mary’s coming and cries, “And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me?” The song of Mary follows.
The Collect
PURIFY OUR conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at His coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for Himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.Amen. Lesson ~ Micah 5: 2 – 5a A Reading from the Word of God written in the Fifth Chapter of the Book of Micah, beginning at the second verse. BUT YOU, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah,
who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me
one who is to rule in Israel,
whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.
Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has brought forth;
then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel.
14 |
And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the LORD,
in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God.
And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth;
and he shall be the one of peace. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Canticle 9 – The Song of Mary Luke 1:46b - 55 Magnificat 46b "MY SOUL magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, 48 for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.
15 |
54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever."
Epistle ~ Hebrews 10: 5 - 10
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Tenth Chapter of Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews, beginning at the fifth verse.
CONSEQUENTLY WHEN Christ came into the world, he said,
“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me;
in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘See, God, I have come to do your will, O God’ (in the scroll of the book it is written of me).”
When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, “See, I have come to do your will.” He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God's will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel ~ Luke 1: 39 - 45
The Lord be with you And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to Christ Our Saviour. IN THOSE days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”
The Gospel of Christ.
Praise to Christ Our Lord.

Advent and Christmas
Reflections Advent is the “sacrament” of the PRESENCE of God in His world, in the Mystery of Christ at work in History… This mystery is the revelation of God Himself in His incarnate Son. But it is not merely a manifestation of the Divine Perfections, it is the concrete plan of God for the salvation of men and the restoration of the whole world in Christ. This plan is envisaged not as a future prospect but as a present fact. The “last things” are already present and realised in a hidden manner. The Kingdom of God is already “in the midst of us”. But, the mystery can only be known by those who enter into it, who find their place in the Mystical Christ, and therefore find the Mystery of Christ realised and fulfilled in themselves.
Thomas Merton, Seasons of Celebration
People think that God has only become a human being there – in his historical incarnation – but that is not so; for God is here – in this very place – just as mush incarnate as in a human being long ago. And this is why God has become a human being: that God might give birth to you as the only begotten Son, and no less.
Meister Eckhart, Breakthrough; Meister Eckhart’s Creation Spirituality in New Testament, ed. M. Fox

Dear Lord, I may not see the sun and moon lose their light. I may not witness rivers turn red, or stars fall from the sky. Yet there are times when my world becomes unhinged and the foundations of what I believe crack and dissolve. Give me the grace to believe that Your power is at work in the turmoil of my life. Lead me to remember that Your power is greater than all evil, and though the world may rock and sometimes break, it will in time be transformed by Your Love.
