16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Members of the St. Mary’s Parish Family, At some point, every believer asks the question, “Why doesn’t God just step in and end the evil in the world?” We read about murder, rape, terrorism, genocide and evils of every sort. And we begin to wonder, “What is God waiting for?” We know that the Kingdom will come, that a final judgment will be rendered upon the earth. We see unspeakable suffering all around. And so we start to question the divine delay. Today’s parable of the weeds and the wheat is Jesus’ answer to our question. An enemy sows weeds among the farmer’s wheat. Good and evil sprout up side by side. The farmer does not try to tear up the weeds for fear of tearing up the wheat with them. In fact, the weeds and the wheat look almost exactly the same until they come to full growth. And that is why the farmer waits for harvest time to separate them. That is why God waits to establish His Kingdom on the earth. It is in order to allow us to come to full growth; revealing whether we are wheat to be stored up, or weeds to be discarded. In the case of actual wheat and weeds, what they will grow into is genetically predetermined. In the case of humanity, however, we choose our final state. Every small choice we make throughout our lives – whether to be truthful or deceitful, chaste or promiscuous, generous or miserly, forgiving or vengeful – these choices and a million others contribute to the one great choice of our lives; whether we shall be wheat or weeds. It is true that the circumstances of our lives can have a great impact on the choices we make. The kind of family we grow up in, the resources at our disposal, the particular trials we face, all these things may affect how we turn out. But none of them can steal away the great gift that God gives us – the power to choose. And when we choose Christ, He can transform even the toughest, most noxious weeds, into the most desirable of wheat. If then, God withholds His judgment, you and I must be careful to do the same. The moment we have vilified another person to the point of rejecting them as having any capacity for good, that is the moment we have become very different from God. For God always allows for the possibility of conversion. God knows that even the most corrupt sinner can in time become a saint. And so He allows the whole world time. So that as many people as possible can choose Him, and in so doing discover their best and truest selves. Because in the end, God has sown each and every one of us. Nor does God sow weeds, but only wheat. Evil in the world sprouts not from God but from choices freely made against His law of love. And deep within, every human being bears God’s own imprint. Every one of us has the potential to grow into a true son or daughter of the Almighty, and to bear a rich harvest in His Holy Name. In Christ’s Peace, Rev. Mark J. Coiro Pastor

Is it possible for weeds to become wheat? God allows saints and sinners to dwell among each other because sinners need salvation, as do saints. In fact, with God’s grace and a converted heart, a person who has sinned can be reconciled with God and become good wheat. The Church is therefore holy, though having sinners in her midst, because she herself has no other life but the life of grace. If they live her life, her members are sanctified; if they move away from her life, they fall into sins and disorders that prevent the radiation of her sanctity. This is why she suffers and does penance for those offenses, of which she has the power to free her children through the blood of Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit. The reality of this parable is that weeds can convert and become wheat, but let us not forget that wheat can become weeds. If there was no chance of wheat falling and becoming a weed, then Satan would not bother to temp us and Saint Paul would not say, “work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” (Phil 2:12) - Pope Paul VI

DO YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR CHURCH … … train holy priests for ministry? … clothe the naked? … feed the hungry? … minister to the sick?

… shelter the homeless? … educate the young?

… support women in crisis pregnancies? … console the bereaved? IF YES, THEN HAVE YOU GIVEN YET TO THE 2020 CATHOLIC APPEAL?

The Catholic Appeal supports all of the good works listed above and many, many more. The Appeal is to your Archdiocese what the weekly collection is to your parish – the critical support that makes its ministries possible. This includes essential services to the poor and needy, whose situation is more serious in this hard economy than ever before.

We want to thank everyone from St. Mary’s who has already participated in the 2020

Catholic Appeal.

To date our parish has raised $75,203, reaching 85% of our parish goal of $87,486.

Catholic Appeal Envelopes may be dropped off at St. Mary’s anytime and will be credited toward our

Parish’s “In Pew Count.” This makes us eligible for rebates. Online pledges may be made at www.BostonCatholicAppeal.org. Please be sure to identify St. Mary’s, Holliston, as your parish.

Gifts of every size – even modest ones – all matter. The important thing is to participate. Remember what Jesus said when He saw the widow put her one tiny coin into the temple treasury:

“Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.” (Mark 12:44)

"Faith demands that we approach the Eucharist fully aware that we are approaching Christ himself… the Eucharist is a mystery of presence, the perfect fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to remain with us until the end of the world". - St. Pope John Paul II

BE A YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST MISSIONARY

What is a Year of the Eucharist Missionary?

A person who believes in the True Presence of the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and will dedicate themselves to pray, participate in, and promote the Year of the Eucharist.

Who can be a Missionary?

We welcome anyone within and outside of the Archdiocese of Boston to join us as Missionaries, deepening your own love of the Eucharist, and praying for this Eucharistic Year to bear fruit in the whole Church. St. Mary’s Year of the Eucharist Coordinators are Fran Crespi and Jim Merski. Please contact Fran Crespi ([email protected]) or Jim Merski ([email protected]) to become a Year of the Eucharist volunteer.

What does a Year of the Eucharist Missionary do?

We call it the Three P’s — Pray, Participate, Promote.

1. PRAYER – Commit to praying an additional 1% each day. That’s 15 minutes. This can be done at home, in front of the Blessed Sacrament, by going to Mass, or reading Scripture, etc.

Families and/or youth under 12 promise to say at least 3 prayers a day, such as the morning offering, grace before meals, and a bedtime prayer.

2. PARTICIPATION – Commit to helping with and attending Year of the Eucharist events at your parish, school, shrine, campus ministry, and ecclesial community .

Consider ways to help homebound missionaries participate, such as picking them up to attend an event and/or have them assist with an administrative task.

3. PROMOTION – Commit to witnessing to the power of the Eucharist in your life. You can do this a few different ways: give a witness talk at the end of Mass, on a video, or at a faith formation gathering; write something for the bulletin; make a picture to hang up at home, at church, or at school; spread the word about the Year of the Eucharist events at your parish and in the Archdiocese.

To participate, please go to the Year of the Eucharist website at: https://www.bostoncatholic.org/yearoftheeucharist/missionaries to register and become a Year of the Eucharist Missionary and we will send you a Year of the Eucharist pin and prayer card! Once you register, you will be sent a link to the recorded virtual commissioning ceremony which took place with Cardinal Sean on Thursday, June 11 th.

RESEARCH PROJECT WITH FR. CARL ON CATHOLIC

FAMILIES WHOSE CHILDREN NO LONGER

PRACTICE THE FAITH: I am seeking participants in a Catholic research project that is studying young people leaving religion in Catholic families where they have brought up in the faith. The project website is: xaverianmissionaries.org/catholic.disaffiliation. If you are Catholic parents who raised their children Catholic and whose children no longer practice would you consider being part of this study? Also, do you know young adults (perhaps your children) who were raised Catholic but no longer practice? If interested contact me: Fr. Carl Chudy at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine, Holliston. [email protected] | 862.264.7000.

FUNERALS, WEDDINGS, BAPTISMS: Funeral Masses are now permitted again in the Archdiocese of Boston, with all the same new procedures and restrictions as other Masses. Weddings and Baptisms may now be celebrated under the same safety rules.

WISDOM FROM THE SAINTS: “Love your children. In them you can see Baby Jesus. Pray for them a lot and every day put them under Holy Mary’s protection." - St. Gianna Molla

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS 12TH ANNUAL CHARITY

RAFFLE: We’ve donated over $210,000 in the past eleven years, but this year is especially important because the pandemic has really hurt many charities. We’re trying our best to help support them. Council Knights are now selling raffle tickets. One raffle ticket is $5 or five tickets for $20, and we have five prizes from $100 to $1000.

Due to the current pandemic, Knights will follow all social distancing rules and Knights will happily deliver or mail your tickets. You may purchase tickets by sending your check payable to KofC #14224, name, address, and phone number to TOM ANGUISH, 542 WINTER STREET, HOLLISTON. We’ll fill out your tickets and send your portion back to you. Live sales at local stores have been put on hold. New schedules will be announced once the state of emergency has been lifted.

We’re donating to the Holliston Pantry Shelf and food pantries in other local towns, the Holliston Senior Center, local Habitat for Humanity projects, Homes for our Troops and other veteran’s charities. The Drawing is scheduled to take place at Celebrate Holliston on September 26. Raffle co-chairmen are Knights Tom Anguish, Bill Heuer, Aaron Pyman and Grand Knight Al Scaramella.

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP: Due to the COVID - 19 Pandemic, all Middle School Youth Group Activities scheduled for May and June are cancelled. Activities will resume as soon as safety allows. Members will be kept informed by email. Deerfield Rafting, Friday, August 14 – Decision to be made over the next week. EPIC ~ HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP: We pray that everyone has a great summer and we will let our members know if we are able to schedule any events or prayer activities later in the summer and in the fall as we try to keep our youth ministry alive and active despite not being able to meet in person for the time being. We are all heartbroken that the scheduled Mississippi Mission Trip was cancelled due to the current health crisis. If you have any questions about EPIC you can email our Youth Minister Jake at [email protected].

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 19, 2020

REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW PAST DUE FOR FALL 2020

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: The deadline to register children for Religious Education Classes in the Fall of 2020 was Monday, June 15. Class time choices are on a first come first served basis, and students are now being assigned classes. The Registration Forms are still available on the St. Mary’s Website: https://stmarysholliston.com/ under Register/Parish Forms on the main page. Forms should be accompanied by full payment made out to St. Mary’s Parish. Scholarships or payment plans are available. Open to families with children entering Pre-K through Grade 10. If you are new to Holliston and want to register your children please contact us at [email protected]. Welcome!

GRADE 10 REGISTRATION: Registrations for Year II, Grade 10, of our Confirmation Program require a “COMPLETE” in Year I in order to be fully processed. Any Grade 9 makeup work, including Mass Reflection Sheets, must be received before a final class assignment for Grade 10 can be made. THE ROSE FOR LIFE: Is sponsored this week by the Miley Family. Please join them in prayer for an unborn child. If you wish to sponsor the Rose in 2020 please call the Rectory at 429-4427. WHAT IS THE ROSE FOR LIFE? This is a special tradition at St. Mary’s through which parishioners and their families sponsor the “Respect Life” rose that is offered to the Virgin Mary on a weekly basis. During their week of sponsorship, the sponsoring family is asked to pray for all the born and unborn children in the world. The family makes an offering of $10. Part is used to purchase the rose which is placed before the statue of the Blessed Mother in the church. The rest is donated to Pregnancy Help, https://www.bostoncatholic.org/pro-life-office/pregnancy-help, a crisis pregnancy center operated by the Pro Life Office whose mission is to provide compassionate, practical, life-affirming alternatives to abortion. Pregnancy Help offers free and confidential counseling, referrals and assistance on a wide range of medical, social service, housing and financial issues. HOW DO I SPONSOR THE ROSE FOR LIFE? Just call Mary Beth at 508-429-4427, or email [email protected]. WHAT DO ROSES SYMBOLIZE IN CATHOLIC TRADITION? In Catholic symbolism, the red rose is a symbol of Martyrdom, while the white rose is a symbol of Purity. St. Ambrose relates how the rose came to have thorns. Before it became one of the flowers of the earth, the rose grew in Paradise without thorns. Only after the fall of man did the rose take on its thorns to remind man of the sins he had committed and his fall from grace; whereas its fragrance and beauty continued to remind him of the splendor of Paradise. It is probably in reference to this that the Virgin Mary is called a 'rose without thorns,' because she was exempt from Original Sin.

The rose as the queen of flowers is a privileged symbol for Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth. The Marian symbolism is well illustrated by Dante in his description of paradise. His guide, Beatrice, invites him to contemplate among the heavenly inhabitants the beauty of Mary, the Mother of God: “Why are you so enamored of my face that you do not turn

your gaze to the beautiful garden which blossoms under the radiance of Christ? There is the Rose in which the Divine Word became flesh; here are the lilies whose perfume guides you in the right ways.” (Paradiso, 23 71-75).

The rose is a symbol of Christ, too, as seen in the German Christmas song from a poem by Goethe, Es ist ein’ Ros’entsprungen (Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming).

In Renaissance art, a garland of roses is often an allusion to the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin.

Wreaths of roses worn by Angels and Saints are indicative of heavenly joy.

An apron full of roses is an attribute of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, while a basket of roses and apples is used to identify St. Dorothea of Cappadocia.

HOW TO ATTEND WEEKEND MASS ~

PANDEMIC PROCEDURES (Daily Mass is exactly the same, except that there is no preregistration or sign in

upon arrival. To save cleaning, only nave seating will be used on weekdays. To

allow deep cleaning, the Saturday 9 AM Mass is suspended).

Please note that these rules have been mandated for all churches for health safety compliance. We did not devise them, we are just following them in order to reopen. For their protection, the elderly and those with underlying health vulnerabilities are discouraged from attending in Phase One. Anyone with a fever or other symptoms of illness should also not attend. 1) Pre-sign up for a Mass via Sign Up Genius. After taping the church pews apart by 6 feet, our allowed capacity is now 200 people per Mass (usually 600). 2) Bring hand sanitizer with you and wear a mask at all times. Children under the age of two should not wear masks. Parents should judge for children between the ages of two and five whether they should wear a mask. All people who claim an exemption because of health can forego wearing a mask. 3) Bring a printout of the Mass Bible Readings if desired. To avoid possible cross-contamination, we are not permitted to provide missals or handouts. You may find the readings easily at: http://www.usccb.org/bible/ by calendar date, or at www.magnificat.com/free. You can also access these on your smartphone, but please shut that ringer off for Mass! :) 4) Enter the church through the front center door facing the Town Hall, or the elevator if handicapped. Only these entrances will be accessible. If using the elevator, PLEASE hand sanitize before touching the glass entry door handles and elevator push buttons. 5) Sanitize your hands immediately upon entering the church. We have a limited supply of sanitizer for anyone who forgets to bring some, but please try to bring your own. 6) Sign in with the door volunteers at the Mass for which you preregistered. 7) Upon entering the church proper, keep your mask on at all times and follow 6 foot social distancing - except for families who may sit together as a group. Every other pew is taped off, and blue tape in each pew center marks out a 6 foot area between opposite ends of the same pew. 8) Please refrain from singing – spoken responses only. 9) For Holy Communion, follow the blue arrows which are spaced 6 feet apart. Receive with your mask on, in the hands only. Then step away from the Communion table. Once 6 feet from the priest or minister, remove your mask, place the Host in your mouth, and then immediately put your mask back in place. 10) If using the bathrooms in the Parish Center, follow the arrows to use one stairwell to go down and the other to come back up. This avoids people passing each other closely on the stairs. 11) Participants at Mass are asked to leave the church within a couple of minutes of the end of the Mass so as to allow time for cleaning the church before the next Mass. No social gatherings are permitted after Mass. 12) Please remove any papers or trash from your pew when you exit, and place it in the receptacles provided at the church entrances. Please do not leave anything in the pew where a cleaner would have to touch it! 13) Shared collection baskets are not permitted, so no collection can be taken up at Mass. Please continue to make your weekly offertory support via Automatic Giving, WeShare, or by mailing in or dropping off your envelope via the rectory mail-slot. Thank you! This is a long list and hardly ideal. But we will do what we must to comply and open again. A good video to help you visualize reopening procedures is here: https://vimeo.com/421142581

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 19, 2020

WORSHIPING VIRTUALLY WITH ST. MARY’S PREPARING A PLACE TO PRAY: Pick a place where you will be as free from as many distractions as you can. A TV or Radio in the background will never let you listen to the service, or God. So do your best to rearrange a spot and be sure to shut off your cellphone entirely. Set your laptop, iPad or phone into a good position on a table. Clear everything else off. If you have a candle, put that near you. An Icon, Cross, or Statue of Mary is great, too. Print out and have handy the Mass Readings: www.magnificat.com/free. When ready, have your family pray together the following prayer of preparation: Throughout time, Almighty God has moved people to set apart places to pray, to worship, and to meet with God. Almighty God, we thank you for making us in Your image, for making Your presence known, and for calling us

to know You. We set apart this time and this place for Your worship. Sanctify it all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. May all we do here be to Your glory. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

At this time, light your candle.

COMMUNION TIME: If watching Mass, make an Act of Spiritual Communion at Communion time.

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

SUNDAY MASS: Every Sunday, the 11:30 AM Mass is being live-streamed from our beautiful St. Mary’s Church. You may watch this Mass live on Holliston Cable Access: Verizon Fios Ch. 33 or Comcast Xfinity Ch. 96. Or you can visit: https://www.facebook.com/MusicAtStMarysHolliston and scroll down. You do not need a Facebook account to access this page. If you arrive “early,” you may need to hit the refresh button. Welcome!

SAINT MARY’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM JULY`19, 2020

THE PARISH CENTER IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO THE COVID-19 VIRUS. NOTICE FOR THE 2020-2021 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATIONS: Registration forms are available at: https://stmarysholliston.com/ under the top right corner REGISTER tab / under PARISH FORMS. We hope you will also consider joining Christ’s mission as a Teacher or Monitor. IMPORTANT: Many families have contacted our office to inquire about classes in September and if they should send in the registration for their children. It is important that you send in the registrations so we can plan ahead with either the classroom model, remote home classes or a hybrid model or both. St. Mary’s will have faith formation for your children and youth in September. At this time we do not have information on how the busing schedules will affect the opening of schools. Many schools are working on ways to deliver students to school and home again safely with social distancing in place. For children who attend classes during the weekday they often walk to St. Mary’s Center for their religious education classes. If social distancing is the norm in September then the number of students permitted in a classroom setting will be limited and other options will be in place so that students will be able to attend classes or remotely at home. If necessary class lessons will be recorded ahead for remote learning so that families can work together at home. VOLUNTEERS: If classes are permitted in the center by September there will be a need for many volunteers. It will be difficult for children to practice social distancing and keep their masks on without another adult in the classroom monitoring the children. Children will be required to have their snack before entering the center. Families will have to ensure that their children are packed for school with an extra snack. PRE-K, KINDERGARTEN AND GRADE 1: If you have children entering these grades you can register them in our religious education program. Go to the website listed above and download the registration form. Please note that children must complete Grade 1 before entering Grade 2. WINGS (Women in God’s Spirit): WINGS has a Facebook page and would love to have folks (not just members) access it and respond to posts. https://www.facebook.com/WingsHolliston/

THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION 2020: The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred by Bishop Reed on Saturday, September 26 at 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM. Because of likely social distancing concerns, candidates will be assigned which Confirmation they will attend. This will assure a 50/50 split between the two celebrations. For this reason, candidates should keep the times of both Confirmations free on their calendar. See page 5 of this bulletin for more Grade 10 Information. GRADE 2 FIRST COMMUNION MASSES: Even though Public Masses are permitted now there is a mandate in place allowing only 40% of the normal capacity of church attendees to attend any one scheduled Sunday Mass. As of this Sunday twenty four children have received their First Holy Communion and will now be part of our parish family coming before the altar of God to receive Jesus every weekend at Mass. We welcome them and celebrate with their families the Blessed Sacrament in the “Year of the Eucharist.” A special thank you to all the teachers who prepared the children for their First Communion Day. SAINT MARY’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM JULY`19, 2020

IMPORTANT CORI AND PGC INFORMATION~ FY2020 CORI VOLUNTEER RENEWAL ALERT: Ministry Leaders must make sure that all their active volunteers (18 years and older) renew and complete a FY 2020 CORI. NOTICE: Due to the current restrictions and health concerns presented by the pandemic, the office of Risk Management at the Archdiocese has made the following temporary adjustments to their adult child protection training requirements All employees and all volunteers who may have contact with children are required to complete Protecting God’s Children training. However, due to our current inability to gather together for live trainings, volunteers can currently meet this requirement through participation in two online trainings: VIRTUS online PGC training and Massachusetts online Mandated Reporter training. To complete the online PGC training, volunteers should go to www.virtusonline.org.

1. Click on “First time registrant 2. On the next page click on “Begin the registration

process” 3. Select “Boston” from the drop down list of

dioceses 4. Complete the registration process.

Once registration is complete you will be directed to an online PGC training through VIRTUS. Upon completion of that training, individuals will be directed to a link to an additional online training on mandated reporting in Massachusetts. Both online trainings must be completed to be in compliance with child protection requirements. The mandated reporter training can be found at: http://51a.middlesexcac.org/. Copies of the mandated reported certificates should be sent to Michelle Gee at [email protected]. It is not necessary to submit a copy of the PGC certificate. Anyone with questions can contact Vivian Soper at [email protected] or at 617-746-5995. While staff are working from home, email and phone messages are checked at least hourly during normal work hours. CORI FORMS FOR 2020-2021: If you are planning on volunteering in any ministry, please call the R.E. office and a CORI form will be sent to you via Email. Scan in your license and complete the CORI form and send it back via Email.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 19, 2020

KEEPING THE MISSION ALIVE/BOOK DISCUSSION: During St. Mary’s 150th Anniversary Parish Mission, Jon Leonetti provided his three books for sale. Given the response (he sold out), it seems that Mission participants are interested in continuing to think and pray about Jon’s message. Please reach out to Lisa Dufault at [email protected] or Diane Collins at [email protected] to sign up, and we will let you know the date. ST. MARY’S 150th ANNIVERSARY GALA SILENT AUCTION: Interested in donating to the St. Mary’s 150th Anniversary Gala Silent Auction? We are looking for donations of all kinds. Perhaps you are a season ticket holder, a business owner, someone who owns a vacation house who can offer a weekend getaway, or maybe you have a special talent or service you could donate (culinary professional, massage therapist, painter, musician, personal health instructor). This would be a great opportunity to help make St. Mary's Anniversary celebration a

great success! We would love to hear from you! Please contact Paula Watt at 401-256-8341 or [email protected]. PARISH ANNIVERSARY HISTORY BOOK UPDATE: Covid-19 is not stopping the progress of the anniversary history book. The past few weeks I was looking for info on CYO activities at St. Mary’s, St. Mary’s Teen Center from the 1960s, and a Mission in East Holliston. Now I am asking for photographs from St. Mary’s 100th Anniversary in 1970 or our 125th Anniversary in 1995. If you have any information on any of these topics, please contact me: [email protected] or call 508-429-7190. Thank you.
