St Mary’s Catholic Church Greenville, South Carolina @ @ @ @ @ 26 July 2020 Dear Friends in Christ, Prudence is one of the four cardinal virtues, and the others are justice, fortitude, and temperance. These four are called cardinal virtues because they are the hinge or pivotal human virtues around which all other moral virtues are grouped, and when the cardinal virtues become firm and stable dispositions in the soul, then a mature person is able more readily to govern his passions and guide his conduct according to both reason and faith. Following Aristotle, St Thomas Aquinas held that prudence is right reason in action, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “prudence is the virtue that disposes practical reason to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it” (CCC 1806). Prudence is an essential virtue for leading a peaceful and well ordered life, and like all human virtues, prudence is acquired by education, by repeated good choices, and by perseverance in an ongoing effort to forge a good character that moves us to cooperate with God’s grace in honesty and humility. Growing in the human virtues is difficult because of man’s Fall from grace, but it is not impossible. Moreover, no human virtue is ever a substitute for the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love which are purely the free and unmerited gifts of God and by which alone we are justified by grace. Nevertheless, striving to grow in human virtues is praiseworthy and conducive to happiness, and those who acquire the cardinal virtues by long practice find it easier to maintain emotional balance in their lives, particularly during times of great distress of the sort in which we are now living. Prudence was known in antiquity as the charioteer of the other virtues because prudence guides our actions by establishing rule and measure in human judgments. For this reason, prudence allows us to apply general moral principles to particular cases and thereby increases the likelihood that we will make wise choices which enhance our own self-mastery even when we are driven by strong emotions like fear or anger. I write to you today about the cardinal virtues because we are badly in need of their service to find our way through these difficult days of pandemic, economic distress, and political strife. Every day our flickering screens are filled with more shouting, competing truth claims, recrimination, and hatred, and making prudent choices in such circumstances would seem to require wisdom greater even than that granted to Solomon. But it is never too late to begin cultivating the cardinal virtues, and a good place to start is the section of the Catechism which describes both human and theological virtues and connects them to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Read paragraphs 1803 to 1845 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and resolve today to build the virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance in the service of growing in wisdom and understanding of both the human condition and the truth of the Gospel. 26 July 2020

Dear Friends in Christ,

Prudence is one of the four cardinal virtues, and the others are justice, fortitude, and temperance.

Introduction to SAFE Grants

South Carolina families with a household adjusted gross income of 300% or less of the federal poverty level (FPL) may apply through a secure online portal which will be located at MySCEducation.org to receive a SAFE grant of up to $6,500 per student.

The first 2,500 scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, after which a lottery program will be instituted (if necessary) to allocate the balance of available grant funds.

Parents may sign up to receive important program notifications, such as the opening of the online portal at MySCEducation.org.

What schools may participate in the SAFE Grants program?Schools wishing to participate in the program must complete an online application process that verifies basic legal, educational, and accountability requirements. This application can be found at surveymonkey.com/r/SAFEGrantSchool. Learn more about how schools qualify at MySCEducation.org.

What are SAFE Grants?SAFE Grants is a program, developed by Governor Henry McMaster, to address the educational needs of eligible K5-12 students who attend a participating independent school in South Carolina.

Modeled on successful grant and scholarship programs serving thousands of students in states like Florida, Arizona, and North Carolina, SAFE Grants will provide critical support for working and low-income families to stabilize their child’s education journey during the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure these students can access an education environment of their choice.

Who do SAFE Grants benefit?Students COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on the education of students across our state. By allowing eligible students to remain in the schools they love and providing new opportunities for students whose health, economic, or education challenges make private education the best choice. SAFE Grants put the needs of struggling students first.

Parents Many families make big sacrifices to find the right education fit for their child. SAFE Grants provide relief for stretched family budgets and peace of mind for worried parents, especially those most impacted by COVID-19.

Independent Schools These schools are essential to the education of the over 50,000 South Carolina children they currently serve, making them essential to our state’s education system. To keep tuition costs low, many operate on shoestring budgets even in flush economic years. SAFE Grants will help support the jobs and education that independent schools provide.

MySCEducation.org

Public Schools COVID-19 has created many challenges for traditional public schools, especially in ensuring the health and safety of students, teachers, and staff as schools reopen. SAFE Grants can help alleviate the impact of COVID-19 on public schools’ resources by giving parent support in making alternative choices, saving both money and space.

What may SAFE Grants be spent on?SAFE Grants may be used to cover the cost of tuition, defined as the total amount of money charged for the cost of a qualifying student to attend a participating independent school including, but not limited to, fees for attending the school and school-related transportation.

How are SAFE Grants funded?SAFE Grants are funded through a federal CARES Act grant made to the Office of Governor Henry McMaster. Governor McMaster has dedicated up to $32 million of this grant, known as the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund, to provide subgrants through the SAFE Grants program. This program does not draw from existing state or local education funds.

Director of Catechesis and Congregational Care

St Mary’s has an opening for a new Director of Catechesis and Congregational Care. The full time staff member will work under the supervision of our Pastoral Associate, T.J. Nielsen, to coordinate the catechesis and sacramental preparation of the children in our parish who do not attend St Mary’s School. This person will also be responsible for several forms of service to the wider parish and provide staff support to both Fr Newman and T.J.

The preferred candidate for the position of Director of Catechesis and Congregational Care will be a practicing Catholic in full communion with the Church who has at least an undergraduate degree or equivalent professional training and relevant experience in a parish or other appropriate setting. This position is full time and benefits eligible, and all interested parties should send a letter and resume to Fr Newman at [email protected].

SAn Introduction to Catholicism

What is Catholicism?

Is the Catholic Faith in the Bible?

Did the Lord Jesus found the Catholic Church?

Our course called An Introduction to Catholicism is designed to answer

these and many other questions about the origins of Catholic

Christianity and the shape of Christian faith and life within the

Catholic Church.

The classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 to 7.30 pm from

Labor Day through Easter, and all are invited to come and discover what

it means to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus in His holy Catholic Church.

FOR MORE INFORMATION Contact T.J. Nielsen, at [email protected] or 864.679.4114.

Welcome NewcomersWe welcome the following new members to our parish family: Drs Rob & Elizabeth Larrivee, Mr & Mrs Daniel Humphries and Mr Andrew O’Steen.

Streaming Mass in Gallivan Hall Anyone who wants to attend Mass at St Mary’s is welcome to do so, and Gallivan Hall will be open during every weekend Mass in July to provide plenty of room for everyone. Mass will be clearly visible and audible in Gallivan Hall thanks to our cinema screen and sound system, and the rest rooms to the left of the stage will be open. If you arrive for Mass and find that the church is already full to our limited capacity, then please go to Gallivan Hall. Or, if you just prefer a little more distance from your neighbors, you can go directly to Gallivan Hall.

Those who attend Mass in Gallivan Hall will be welcome to receive Holy Communion either by walking over to the church during the Communion Rite or by coming immediately after Mass and waiting in the center aisle for the priest or deacon to begin a second distribution of Communion. These two options will allow for the reception of Holy Communion without a crowd forming in the church.

Please note that every other pew will remain closed to allow for social distancing, and we continue to encourage strongly the wearing of a face mask and careful attention to hand washing and purifying to help reduce the spread of the virus. Our cry rooms remain closed because proper distancing is not possible in those spaces, and for now Confessions are being heard in the cry rooms on Saturday from 3.30 - 4.30 pm. The Wednesday afternoon Holy Hour is suspended for July and will return on 5 August.

Finally, the dispensation from the Sunday obligation remains in force, which means that no one is required to attend Mass, even though all must find a way to keep the Lord’s Day holy, and the best way to do that is by joining in the sacred liturgy live-streamed on Sunday morning at 11 am. If you are at risk of the severe symptoms possible from exposure to SARS-CoV-2, then please stay home and join us in prayer remotely.
