From a Vicar Fr Miles Pateman

As Fr Philip is taking some well earned leave, I get the pleasure of writing what gets called the “Rector’s Ramblings” in the parish magazine of my home parish!

I cannot quite believe that we have managed to get to October already—by the time this goes to print, I will have been with you for six months. Honestly, it seems like only yesterday that I was being li-censed on Zoom.

October brings with it Harvest and the annual collection of goods for the Port Talbot Foodbank. In the harvest festival gospel this year, we hear Jesus’ parable of the birds of the air and the lilies of the field (which I cannot hear now without thinking of the that scene in Monty Py-thon’s Life of Brian.)

I have heard this passage used to try and argue that we shouldn’t be worried about material things at all—which is not such a good reading of Jesus’ teaching here. We are called to strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness. It is one of the marks and callings of the Church on earth that she works for and shows the signs of the kingdom. A real kingdom-sign in our town is the Foodbank. The wonderful volunteers and donors are truly striving for the kingdom of God.

Now, Harvest traditionally sees us giving to the Foodbank, but also this month our brand-new Baby Basics Centre will be opening. Based at the St Mary’s Centre, Baby Basics is a bit like a foodbank for new families. Founded in Sheffield, Ba-by Basics offers (as the name suggests) the

basics for the first few weeks or months for a mum and her baby when they otherwise wouldn’t be able to get together the things they need.

Baby Basics works in such a way that the centre never meets the families they help (rather we work through midwives, health visitors and other professionals) but it is another kingdom-sign: striving to show and announce the good kingdom on earth. Naturally we are looking for donations of baby clothes, nappies and other essentials so that we can build up a good stock for the packs we will be sending out to moth-ers all across Port Talbot.

Later in this edition, you will find a “wish list” of just some of the items we need for Baby Basics. Please speak to me or Susan Hughes at St Mary’s if you would like to help in any way!

One last thing, the 28th October is the feast of Ss Simon and Jude, apostles. They are rather background figures among the apostles (Simon is the Zealot and Jude is the patron saint of lost causes and police officers). They are also the patron saints of my alma mater—the College of the Resur-rection at Mirfield. Please do keep the Col-lege and all old Mirfield students in your prayers this month.

God bless, Fr Miles

St Francis of Assisi Each year on 4th October we celebrate one of the great heroes of our Faith—St Francis of Assisi. Born into a noble family in north-ern Italy in 1181 or 1182, he famously re-nounced his status and wealth to serve God in poverty—even to the point of strip-ping himself naked in front of the Bishop of Assisi and the assembled nobility. He gathered a community of friars around him to preach the word and live among the poorest in society. Famously, Francis preached even to the birds and ani-mals. His gentleness was so powerful, that (according to his life story) Francis even was able to calm a wolf that had been ter-rorising the town of Gubbio. The story goes that the Wolf of Gubbio even (sort of) be-

came a Franciscan as Brother Wolf. Francis is known as the inventor of the Christmas Crib, setting up the first na-tivity scene at Grecchio. Francis was fa-mous for his preaching and teaching—laying out the Gospel story in simple and engaging ways that everyone he met could understand. He is the founder of the worldwide Franciscan Family; patron saint of care for the environment, the Republic of Italy and stowaways.

Richard Burton Exhibition Cardiff Muse-um It was a lovely day when I left Port Talbot in the company of Jayne O'Brien, David Jenkins and their friend Ken Evans to visit the above exhibition.

After a short taxi drive from the sta-tion to the museum, we had a short coffee stop before going into the exhibition.

On entering the exhibition, I was overwhelmed as, were the others by the amount of memorabilia that was there. Pictures, diaries, programmes and posters of the plays and films that he starred in but the most impressive was two of the costumes that he wore as Marc Anthony in the film Cleopatra. There were also two of Elizabeth Taylor dresses that she wore in the same film. I didn't realise that she had such a small waist.

What I enjoyed the most was a TV screen showing various interviews that he did for BBC Wales over the years. They were an excellent insight into the man, his life and his career.

After we left the exhibition, the men stayed in the coffee shop and Jayne and I went to see the dinosaurs. They were ex-cellent and a bit frightening. We saw Lily's fossil which she found on a beach near Barry.

After a great time in the museum, we were ready for a spot of lunch so went to Mowgli Street Food restaurant. The food was delicious and there was a lovely atmosphere there. Good food and good company. It was an enjoyable day out. The first of many, I hope. Anne Griffiths

4th-9th Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us your gift of faith that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to that which is before, we may run the way of your commandments and win the crown of everlasting joy; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 10th-16th O God, forasmuch as without you we are not able to please you: mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

31st-6th November Blessed Lord, who caused all holy scriptures to be written for our learning: help us so to hear them, to read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them that, through patience and the comfort of your holy word, we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Cash for clothes We are still collecting clean adult and children’s clothes, shoes and belts at St Mary's church hall SA12 6DZ on Sundays 12.15-3pm. Please leave outside the door. Many thanks!

Alcoholics Anonymous We hold group meetings every week and anyone wishing to come and sit in is more than welcome. If you need any more information, please contact Sue Roberts on 01639 870321. Sharing Gifts and Talents Last month the parish magazine ran an article entitled ‘Giving for Life’, reminding us that we are challenged to give of our time, talents and possessions for the benefit of others and in doing so, being a visible presence of God’s love to others within our community.

Sometimes this can be difficult as

we do not always see we have anything to

offer others, and maybe we consider

ourselves to be more in need of support

17th-23rd

God, the giver of life, whose Holy Spirit wells up within your Church: by the Spirit’s gifts equip us to live the gospel of Christ and make us eager to do your will, that we may share with the whole creation the joys of eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 24th-30th

Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord, to your faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

from others. But all of us have gifts we can

offer to others, gifts of the head, such

as knowledge and information we know,

gifts of the heart, such as showing

compassion and concern for others, gifts of

the hands, such as the practical skills we

have. All of us can use our gifts and talents

for the benefit of others, sometimes it just

means knowing where to share them and

taking that leap of faith to do it.

If you are looking for somewhere to

share your talents, then look no further,

come and speak to me. I need you to join

with others, to support those in need

within the community of Port Talbot. Your

talents and skills are very precious, and I

promise they will be put to good use as we

move forward with the project. Whatever

you feel you can offer, I will await your call,

or pop in and see me at St. Paul’s Centre.

And if you are summoning up the

courage to take that leap of faith to share

your gifts and talents, then remember,

‘Courage is fear that has said its

prayers.’ (Dorothy Bernard).

Thank you all

The Port Talbot Compassionate Community Project will be starting a new craft group in October. The craft group will help to supply the little gifts we need to run our new initiative to supply ‘Kindness Boxes’ to those in the community who are lonely, unwell or struggling to cope. I am looking for any supplies of fabric,

sewing tools, wool, knitting needles,

crochet hooks, machines, indeed

anything you may have stashed at the back

of cupboards which you may longer

need....think of it as a de-cluttering

service!

Of course, along with the tools and

supplies, I am looking for the skills and

talents of all crafters to contribute to the

group. Please let me know if you can help,

either with supplies or talent. If you unable

to attend the craft group but would still like

to help with the ‘Kindness Boxes’ project, I

would love to hear from you.

Thank you all.

Mother’s Union It is with sadness that I have to report the closure of the St Mary's branch of the Mother's Union. They became a very close-knit group but numbers have dwin-dled over the years. I have only been a mem-ber and Sec-retary for a relatively short time - 6 years - but I can remember as a child my mother and Nan Longman talking about meetings and outings. Mam (Freda Lyford) joined along with her mother - My Mam Longman - 67 years ago and my mother has been a member ever since. They both attended meetings along with the Mothers and Grandmothers of: Brenda Hazel - Mrs Shopland, Barbara Morris and Marjorie Williams - Mrs Fowler, Jean Malone - Mrs Daniels, Shirley Nicholas - Mrs Beatie Jones, among many others. As we disbanded on Tuesday September 7th, we all met at St Paul Centre for lunch and had a wonderful afternoon together. Thanks to Jackie who joined us for lunch and took the service and the closed the afternoon with a rendition of "We'll meet again" and the Mother's Union Prayer. In 2011 we had 40 members, we are now down to 13, Freda who is 98 has been a

member for 71 years and Ethel who is 99 has been a member for 60 years. In all we have 750 years between us. The record of enrolment at Aberavon is dated 1901 and at St Theodore’s recorded at 1891. Sue

On Tuesday 7th September I joined our Aberavon branch members as they sadly closed the branch. After prayers, Joan Ox-ley spoke about the branch in-forming us that records show the branch was opened in 1927! There was a love-ly lunch and chat

and I invited the members to join our St Theodore’s branch where they are very welcome. At the end of the afternoon we presented Joan, Ann and Sue with flowers along with Ethel Scourfield who is the longest member of the branch and is 99 years young. A sad occasion but hopefully we can keep the memories alive and continue to sup-port the members through our branch. I was delighted to see so many members attend our first meeting back and I hope everyone enjoyed Father Miles’ talk on his time teaching in Austria, our sincere thanks to Father Miles for his time and support. It was also wonderful to welcome members from our Aberavon and Cwmavon branch, we do hope to see you all again! I hope you all enjoyed the raffle which raised £70 for our ‘Summer of Hope’ appeal.

Award Winning Café! Congratulations go to Johnathon, Rebecca and Cath from Cafe TwoCann St Paul's Centre for coming first in the category 'Cafe, Desserts and Coffee Shop' in the online site Restaurant Guru. This is for the second year running.

They were also placed fifth in the category 'Restaurant' on the same site. These are in the Port Talbot area. Well done! And may you continue to serve deli-cious food and the best cappuccinos ever. Anne Griffiths The team at TwoCann really do an amazing job. The food is spectacular, and Anne’s not wrong in her judgement of the cap-puccinos! If you haven’t had a chance yet, do go and check them out. The cheesecakes are to die for! Fr Miles

Praying together at home: choose Morning or Evening

In the morning

Lord, open our lips and we shall praise your name.

Come, ring out our joy to the Lord; hail the God who saves us. Let us come before him, giving thanks, with songs let us hail the Lord.

A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in; let us bow and bend low; let us kneel before the God who made us: for he is our God and we the people who belong to his pasture, the flock that is led by his hand. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The readings from page 10 or 11 One of the Collects & The Lord’s Prayer

In the evening

O God, come to our aid. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The readings from page 10 or 11 My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour. He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. One of the Collects & The Lord’s Prayer

Newydd page 17 October 2021

Other Prayers A spiritual Communion for when we are unable to be at the Eucharist with Jesus. Soul of Christ, sanctify me

Body of Christ, save me

Blood of Christ, inebriate me

Water from the side of Christ, wash me

Passion of Christ, strengthen me

O good Jesus, hear me

Within Thy wounds hide me

Suffer me not to be separated from Thee

From the malignant enemy defend me

In the hour of my death call me

And bid me come unto Thee

That with Thy Saints I may praise Thee

Forever and ever. Amen.

Blessed Lord, who in a wonderful Sacrament has left us a memorial of thy Passion: grant us, we beseech thee, so to venerate the sacred mysteries of thy Body and Blood, that we may ever perceive within ourselves the fruit of thy redemption, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen. For strength in faith Almighty God, who revealed the faith to the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ being the foundation stone: following the example of the saints and martyrs of your Holy Church, may we live in your fear, die in your favour and rest in your peace; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

At the intercession of Our Lady of Walsingham

O Mary, recall the solemn moment when Jesus, your divine son, dying on the cross, confided us to your maternal care. You are our mother, we desire ever to remain your devout children. Let us therefore feel the effects of your powerful intercession with Jesus Christ. Make your name again glorious in the shrine once renowned throughout our land by your visits, favours, and many miracles. Pray, O holy mother of God, for the conversion of England and Wales, restoration of the sick, consolation for the afflicted, repentance of sinners, peace to the departed. O blessed Mary, mother of God, our Lady of Walsingham, intercede for us. Amen.

For Unity Heavenly Father, you have called us in the Body of your Son Jesus Christ to continue his work of reconciliation and reveal you to the world: forgive us the sins which tear us apart, give us the courage to overcome our fears and to seek that unity which is your gift and your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen. Eternal God and Father, whose Son at supper prayed that his disciples might be one, as he is one with you: draw us closer to him, that in common love and obedience to you we may be united to one another in the fellowship of the one Spirit, that the world may believe that he is Lord, to your eternal glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the Church

Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

or

Lord hear us. Lord, graciously hear us. At the prayers for the departed:

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord and let light perpetual shine upon them.

May they rest in peace and rise in glory. At the end of the Prayers: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. When the bread and wine are placed on the altar the response to the offertory prayer is Blessèd be God for ever. Pray, my brothers and sisters, that this my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his Holy Church. The priest prays the Prayer over the Gifts

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

The priest continues alone until all say: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory; Hosanna in the highest. Blessèd is He who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest.

At the end of the Prayer of Consecration all say Amen. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body for we all share in one bread.

Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace. This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world: Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. As the priest receives Holy Communion and cleanses the vessels you may wish to say the prayer for a Spiritual Communion on page 12 The Dismissal Give thanks to the Lord, for he is gracious. His love is everlasting. The priest prays the Post Communion Prayer. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Blessing

Thinking about our Stewardship When we think about running a business, a car, a home, a parish there are costs incurred. So, we have to budget, in church circles it has often been said, the living church needs to be able to pay the living costs. We don’t have an endless pit of money that we can reply upon constantly, because one day those if any reserves we have will go and then what do we do? So, what are the running costs? The parish share for 2021 is £106,075.00 this goes towards the cost of the clergy, to house them, national insurance, pension, training costs support from the diocese etc. This alone is as follows: Yearly: £106,075.00 Monthly: £8838.58 Weekly: £2039.90 Our parish share payment is just one of our monthly outgoings! PLUS: Gas, Electricity, Water rates, Insurance, Office costs, Candles, Oil, Wafers, Wine etc…. This is before we do any repairs or buy anything else that we need. So, our income is important, and we are grateful to each person’s giving to the life and witness of the Church. So, our income comes from limited sources. Our Giving Fees from occasional offices Hall rentals etc. Collections throughout the year Fundraising Imagine if the giving alone covered the costs of our expenditure, no worries

anything else that came in could go easily to repairs and projects. We would not be worried about endless fundraising. But like most parishes we need all these sources of income to help pay our bills. That is the reality of the world we live in. SO, firstly thank you for your contribution, your part! Your giving is important! Think about Gift aid, this is easy money, because the is money we get back on your gift, every £1 given we can claim 25p back. PLEASE think and pray about your giving. NO-ONE is telling anyone how much to give to the church, it is our response to God, our thanksgiving. Where dose our giving fit in with our list of priorities. Think about using the envelope scheme, or gift direct. Stewardship is not just about money, it’s also about our gifts, talents, our time. How can we help and support the church, what can we do to further the mission of the Church? Please continue to help us provide

mission and ministry here 7 days a week,

52 weeks a year. We do some amazing

work because of you and your generosity.

Together we can carry on this work and

do more to grow the kingdom of God.
