The children took part in their harvest service after they had prepared

November … remembering and rejoicing !

Dear everyone.

I think November is a wonderful month!

Just as the nights are drawing in and the clocks go back this weekend, the colours of nature

become comforting and colourful and Christmas is beckoning us in.

I just love the seasons. We have just celebrated Harvest and we collected so much food for

the Food Bank and the Ark at our Harvest Festivals at the Parish Church and St Peters.

This shines out against the awfulness of today’s Halloween, the trick or treating American-

ism and the dressing up in devil and vampire costumes (come back our Halloweens of bob

apples and duck apples!)

This year we have our Light and Bright Party on 31st October—an alternative Halloween.the

details are on page 1.

This year we are having fun with the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Please consider

sending your little ones to a fun, free, Light and Bright time?

‘Lest we Forget’, is a time of music and celebration to be held at St Mary’s Parish Church at

4pm on Saturday 9th November, again, details are in this Magazine (page 14).

This year the British Legion have said that instead of just remembering the fatalities of the

Armed Forces civilian deaths will be remembered too—how wonderful and right is that?

Our Angel Festival returns again this year—see below.

Our Angel Festival returns again this year, they will be in

church from Advent Sunday, Ist December till Twelfth

Night…6th January next year!

There will be an angel tree this year where we can re-

member loved ones who we will be thinking about this

Christmas.

Sometimes it is so right to single people out to say ‘thank you’.

In these last few months, I just want to say a massive thank you from

myself and the parish to so many people.

To Julie and her team, Beth (and Eliza), and all our 13 teenagers, who

turned out in force for our wonderful Holiday Club and for those who

stuck, painted, cut out, made teas and baked, and loved our little ones.

Warden Sue, perusing our old web site, found something that said ‘completed forms’.

When she opened it, it was contacts from people using the web page to con-tact me.

Sadly, my e-mail address had not been altered for 18 months even though my new e-mail was on the Home page.

I was horrified and have tried to contact all of you…so very many…to apol-ogise.

In the end, I only went back to the beginning of this year as there were just

so many.

Many were baptisms (wondered why we had so few at the beginning of this

year), to requests to visit loved ones who were passing away, to weddings

and requests for general info etc.

About a quarter had contacted me through other ways. But for those who

may have thought I, or the church, was just ignoring you. I am so sorry.

We now have a completely new web page, with new ways of making sure

this doesn’t happen again.

Once again, I am deeply sorry.

St. Peter’s Sunday Lunches

The idea for these came about as there are quite a few people living alone at St Pe-ter’s and, talking, realised most did not make Sunday lunch. We thought it would be a good idea, every so often, to go for Sunday lunch after our service. To date, we have had three Sunday lunches going alternate months to the Argyle. We manage to push tables together so we can sit at one long table and there is much chat and laughter. Anyone is welcome to join us and you do not have to live alone to come!

Which Parable?

If Jesus was telling parables today, they would be very different stories to the ones in the Gospels but the message would still be the same. Can you guess which updated Parable this one is? I must just add that only one out of three people guessed the right answer, so here’s a clue. Think on a global scale.

Far away, on the other side of the world, people live on tiny tropical is-lands in the Pacific Ocean. These islands are surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches and clear blue seas. Palm trees give the people shelter from the sun, material to build their homes and fruit called coconuts which give them food and milk to drink. They fish in the seas for food. Palm trees give them wood for fires to cook their food and material to build their homes. Their families have lived on these islands for hundreds of years.

Over the past 50 years things have started to change for these people. As the sea levels begin to rise, because the ice caps are beginning to melt, many of these islands have start-ed to disappear under the sea and people have had to move to other islands. The people living there are worried that, if something isn’t done, all these islands will disappear from the world

Some countries in the developed world refuse to believe that the way they are using fossil fuels to build their industries, or burn down forests for more land, is causing the sea levels to rise. They don’t seem to care.

One young teenager from Sweden has stood up for these people. She has led other young people to demonstrate for change to save the world from rising temperatures which will cause the ice caps to melt and the sea levels to rise. She has even addressed the United Nations and appeared on world television.

EASTHAM SAINTS—Gone but not forgotten

Ken Ingham

Ken Ingham (Edna’s husband) worked very hard to raise the thousands of pounds need-

ed to restore the Parish Church. Ken had a trailer which came in very useful when we

needed to transfer tables and chairs for the Summer Fete or move items from the

Church Centre to the Civic Centre in Bromborough for our White Elephant Sales. On one

notable occasion Ken called at our house in Gorsefield Avenue to help Ray move a metal

sprung double bed base to the Civic Centre. They secured it tightly to Ken’s trailer and

set off at a sedate pace for Bromborough. When they got to the Civic Centre and went to

unload the trailer you can imagine their surprise to find it was no longer there. Although

they drove back straight away, imagining traffic queues and peering into gardens, they

never found it and its whereabouts remains a mystery to this day.

Ken raised a lot of money by col-

lecting old newspapers and did a

regular Saturday morning run from

the Church Centre to the Waste

Collection point in Hooton. So

even in the 80’s St Mary’s was do-

ing its bit to recycle unwanted pa-

per.

On our way to St Davids in Pem-

brokeshire, we take a short cut

through Brithdir to avoid driving to

Dolgellau. The road takes you over a very narrow bridge followed by a right hand turn on

to the very busy A470 coming out between two blind bends. We don’t know how Ken

managed to drive his caravan over that bridge in the first place, let alone manage the

steep right hand turn onto the A road. Edna told me she had to get out and hold up the

traffic. Brave woman!!!. That bridge is known to us now as Ken’s Bridge and reminds us

of a lovely, gentle gentleman every time we drive over it.

Father, we pray for our world, and for the works of our hands every day.

We think of those who use their hands for care. The nurses, doctors, carers, moth-ers, fathers and countless other people who help and heal. God, strengthen these hands when they are weak. May their gentle touch be an act of worship to you.

We think of those who use their hands with technology and science. For the pro-grammers, technicians, engineers, labourers and everyone else who builds and develops. God, thank you for innovation. May it be used for the good of your whole creation, and to glorify you.

We think of those who use their hands for art. For the writers, musicians, filmmak-ers, florists and everyone else who beautifies and reveals truth. God, may our crea-tive fingers reveal more of who you are and speak prophetically into your world.

We think of those who use their hands with money and governance. For the bank-ers, politicians, businesspeople, managers and everyone who organises and allo-cates resources. God, help those hands to act fairly, honestly and bravely in a world which wants them to be selfish and timid.

We think of those who use their hands for hard physical work. For the cleaners, lift-ers, packers, sorters and everyone else whose strength and commitment brings order to your world. God, make us grateful for those who toil. Show them that their vital work brings praise to you.

We think of those who wish they could use their hands more than they do. For the unemployed, the depressed, the physically limited and everyone else who struggles to lift their hands. May they find comfort in your love, and may we value their unique contribution to your Kingdom.

May the works of our hands glorify you, as we are held in your hands.

The Choir

After 32 years leading the choir, for

most of them with the support of his

wife Joyce, Gerry Warr has decided to

take a less active role. We are very

lucky that Gail Davies with the help of

her husband Steve, has taken on the

role of leading the choir. Serving three

very different Parish Priests, Gerry has

built up the choral tradition at St

Mary’s and has introduced many

young people to the joys of Anglican

choral music. The role of choirmaster

requires considerable dedication.

There is the need to prepare the music

for the Sunday services, leading weekly

choir practices, recruiting new mem-

bers, finding a choir for weddings and

funerals and developing choral litur-

gies for the festivals of the Church’s

year. On 29th September the church

sought to express its gratitude to

Gerry, but sadly he was unable to be

with us because he was unwell. His

motto could be “To labour and not to

ask for any reward, save that of know-

ing that we do Thy will”. He will be a

hard act to follow and we wish Gail

every success in her new role

A small group of dedicated people open our beautiful church for visitors from late

May to the Heritage Weekend in September on Wednesday and Thursday after-

noon between 2-4pm.

To enable us to keep doing this we urgently need more people to join us, even if

you can only spare a couple of afternoons a month it would help us. We have plen-

ty of notes for guidance. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend a couple of hours in

a peaceful and beautiful place with the added bonus of the chance to meet new peo-

ple, new friends and even visitors from all over the world. If you are interested

New Lunch group volunteers needed at the Delamere Centre

Sadly, the current group of volunteers who run the luncheon club have now stopped.

The club has been run by this group for the past 9 years and they have done an amazing

job building a really successful luncheon club. They will be missed greatly by all the din-

ers! The luncheon club normally runs every second Monday, with the Light Bites lunch

taking place the alternative week (run by another group of volunteers). If possible, we

would love to recruit a new team of volunteers to take over the luncheon club from Sep-

tember 2019. We will of course need someone who enjoys cooking, servers, someone to

do the shopping and someone who likes doing the dishes. We will pay for new recruits

to do a Level 2 in Food Safety and Hygiene for Catering and support them where neces-

sary.

A Retiring Choirmaster When I completed my 32-year labours as Choirmaster recently, I received many kind messages and good wishes for what I must call my retirement. I am very grateful for them all.

I understand that on what proved to be an unsuitable day, a surprise event had been planned to mark the end of my appointment I did not come. That is the problem with surprises! In fact, I was feeling very unwell. had known about it before the day, I could have let the organisers know.

I realise that a number of people had made preparations for this event and I am sorry that their work was in vain. was at fault in any way, please accept my apologies.

Whatever I may have achieved as Choirmaster, was not all my own work. I cannot say enough in praise of choir members over the years; I clearly would never have achieved anything without them -but I am equally grateful for the support and encouragement I have always received from the congregation. You may be surprised to hear that frequently, (when choosing music for exam-ple) I have asked myself what pieces might be acceptable to the parishioner in the pews. I have tried to avoid pieces that would not help you in your worship.

Behind the scenes I have been very firmly supported by Beth and Malcolm Per-ry.

There is much more detail that I could give arising from the two preceding para-graphs, but that's for another day.

Also pray for Meet and Eat, Lord watch over all those who come to Meet and Eat and for those who help to organise and help with cooking etc. Thank You Lord for the love and laughter.

19th Pray for the Circle of Prayer, as they pray for the sick, Lord encourage Barbara, Simone, Lynne. Sue and others. Holy Spirit fill us with the spirit of love, so that we can pray and give out that special love, only through You can we give to all who need it. Praise and Thanks for all those being confirmed. Holy Spirit be with them all, surround them, envelope them with love, peace, joy.

20th Pray for all those who are in hospital, or the hospice, Lord God watch over your loved ones, may they feel your loving embrace enfolding them. Also, for people having therapy or tests at this time.

21st Pray for all those on the PCC: Lord be with them, in all that they do for our beau-tiful church.

22nd Praise and thanks for the Parish Workers and the Church Wardens, Marilyn, Sue, and the Parish Manager, George - for their diligence. Also, for the Servers etc and cleaners who help with the smooth running of the church. Lord be with them and encourage.

23rd Praise and thanks for the Wednesday Communion and also for the Home Com-munion for the sick. Lord help them to see you in everyone they meet, and that they are truly loved and cherished. Pray for the housebound and physically and mentally disabled. Lord, embrace with love.

24th Pray for the Toy Service at the Parish Church, and also for the United Service at Bromborough Methodist Church. Fun and fellowship, praise to You Lord.

25th Praise and thanks for the Ukulele Group, also for our choir and the Men’s Choir. For Malcolm our organist. Lord help us to appreciate them all. Also, for the Flat Pack Music, for all the Joy they bring to those that attend the concert evenings, for fun and fellowship.

Real Chocolate Company Advent Calendars

I am going to order The Real Advent Calendars again. These calendars also include

a Christmas story activity book and the chocolate is made from Fair Trade Choco-

late. I have to order them before 1st November in multiples of 18. They cost £3.99

Is there anyone who has spare time to pick up a person to bring them to some of our church activities. This can make such a difference in someone’s life, especially if they have little contact with people. There are so many people who have had to give up their cars, and if that’s not bad enough they can no longer easily can get to church, or to some of our church activities.

Tai Chi in 2019 Suitable for all ages and the aim is for it to

be a gentle exercise class. Therefore,

beginners, the 'not so fit' and the 'not so

confident', should feel welcome to give it

a try. It’s free so come and chill out.

October 17th from 2.30-3.30pm (but

normally first Thursday in the month).

Do you have equipment you no longer need?

Every year hospitals etc. issue equipment which is not returned when it is no longer required. This equipment can be collected, cleaned and re-issued for use by someone else.

If you have equipment such as

Heaven’s Grocery Store

I was walking down life’s highway a long time ago.

One day, I saw a sign that said, “Heaven’s Grocery Store”.

As I got a little closer, the door came open wide,

And when I came to myself, I was standing inside.

I saw a host of ANGELS. They were standing everywhere.

One handed me a basket and said, “My child, shop with care.”

Everything a Christian needed was in the grocery store.

And all you couldn’t carry, you could come back the next day for more.

First, I got some PATIENCE, LOVE was in the same row,

Further down was UNDERSTANDING, you need that everywhere you go.

I got a box or two of WISDOM, a bag or two of FAITH,

I couldn’t miss the HOLY GHOST for it was all over the place.

I stopped to get some STRENGTH and COURAGE to help me run this race.

By then my basket was getting full, but I remembered some GRACE.

I didn’t forget SALVATION, for SALVATION is free,

So I tried to get enough of that to save both you and me.

Then I started up to the counter to pay my grocery bill,

For I thought I had everything to do my MASTER’S will.

As I went up the aisle I saw PRAYER and I just had to put that in,

For I know when I stepped outside, I would run right into sin.

PEACE and JOY were plentiful, they were on the last shelf.

SONGS and PRAISES were hanging near, so I just helped myself.

Then I said to the Angel, “Now how much do I owe?”

He just smiled and said, “Just take them everywhere you go.”

Again, I said, “How much do I really owe?”

He smiled again and said:

“MY CHILD, JESUS PAID YOUR BILL, A LONG, LONG TIME AGO!”
